Holiday Candies and Cakes (Delicious Mini Book Book 10)

Holiday Candies and Cakes (Delicious Mini Book Book 10)

June Kessler

Welcome to Candy and Cakes recipes, some times dessert just doesn’t satisfy your sweet tooth cravings, this book is a collection of Cakes, Candies, Truffles, Pralines, Peanut Brittle, Fudge, and Cheesecakes. Many recipes can be packed and sent for Christmas gifts from your kitchen. I have a few tips for successful candy making:
Chocolate Techniques
Melting chocolate
Make sure the utensils used for melting chocolate are completely dry. Moisture will cause the chocolate to “seize” meaning it will become stiff and grainy. If this happens, add ½ teaspoon shortening (not butter) for each ounce of chocolate and stir until smooth. Chocolate will scorch easily. And once scorched it cannot be used. Use one of the following methods for successful melting.
Double Boiler: This is the safest method because it prevents scorching. Place the chocolate in the top of a double boiler or in a heat-proof bowl over hot, not boiling water; stir chocolate until smooth.(make sure the water remains just below a simmer and is one inch below the bottom of the top pan.) Be careful that no steam or water gets into the chocolate.
Direct heat: Place the chocolate in a heavy saucepan and melt over very low heat, stirring constantly. Remove the chocolate from heat as soon as melted. Be sure to watch the chocolate carefully because it scorches easily.
Microwave Oven: Place an unwrapped 1 ounce square or 1 cup of chocolate chips in a small microwaveable bowl. Microwave on high 1 to 1½ minutes, stirring after 40 seconds. Stir the chocolate at 30-second intervals until smooth. Be sure to stir microwave chocolate since it may return to its original shape even when melted.

The Gospel’s Power and Message

The Gospel’s Power and Message

Paul Washer

One of the greatest crimes of this generation of Christians is its neglect of the gospel, and it is from this neglect that all our other maladies spring forth. Absent from too many pulpits are the essential themes which make up the very core of the gospel—the justice of God, the radical depravity of man, the blood atonement. In The Gospel’s Power and Message, Paul Washer addresses these essential elements of Christ’s good news and provides a guide to help us rediscover the gospel in all its beauty, scandal, and saving power. May such a rediscovery transform your life, strengthen your proclamation, and bring the greatest glory to God.

Author Paul Washer ministered as a missionary in Peru for 10 years, during which time he founded the HeartCry Missionary Society to support Peruvian church planters. Paul now serves as one of the laborers with the HeartCry Missionary Society (www.heartcrymissionary.com). He and his wife Charo have three children: Ian, Evan, and Rowan.

Endorsement “In these days of insipid, man-centered, ear-tickling preaching, we need Sons of Thunder who fear God and faithfully preach His word without fear of consequences. My friend, Paul Washer, is one such man. May God use this book to reach the lost and to glorify His name.” — Ray Comfort, author of Hell’s Best Kept Secret and The Way of the Master

“Style-conscious evangelicals have done a lot of tinkering in recent decades to try to make the gospel seem more appealing or more palatable. All the sharp corners have been carefully sanded off and the message made as small as possible. It has then been wrapped in thick layers of foam so that no one can ever be hurt or offended by it. “In The Gospel’s Power and Message, Paul Washer unwraps the gospel and displays its various facets in all their vivid glory. This book is a thoughtful, poignant reminder that the message Christ commissioned us to proclaim is neither spongy nor trivial. Nor can it be improved by human revision. The gospel may be a stumbling block to some and seem like foolishness to others—but to those who are called, it is the power and the wisdom of God.” — Phil Johnson, executive director of Grace to You

“I am profoundly thankful for the courageous clarity of The Gospel’s Power and Message by Paul Washer. Christians today seem to have the false impression that the gospel is all about us—a wonderful plan for our lives; a means of finding peace, joy, or personal fulfillment; the way to get to heaven. Those blessings (and many more) are aspects of every true gospel-believer’s birthright, of course. But they are not the point or the main objective of the message. The gospel is about God and His eternal glory. That is where it starts, and that is where it takes us in the end. Preached rightly, the gospel convicts and humbles every human heart. It underscores the exceeding sinfulness of our sin. It rebukes even our most laudable works of righteousness. The gospel is simple enough for a child to grasp, but its truths are inexhaustible. “In short, the gospel is the best of all good news and the most important message anyone has ever proclaimed. Paul Washer strikes all the right notes in this powerful, biblical study.” — John MacArthur, pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, and author of The Gospel According to Jesus

The Forgotten Fear: Where Have All the God-Fearers Gone?

The Forgotten Fear: Where Have All the God-Fearers Gone?

Albert N. Martin

The fear of God is an important theme in the Bible, yet many Christians today overlook it or treat it carelessly. Fearing God is the soul of godliness, and those who claim to love God should desire to understand what it means to fear Him. The Forgotten Fear revisits this important topic. Author Albert Martin first establishes the theme of the fear of God in both the Old and New Testaments, and then defines what fearing God means. Finally, he addresses the practical implications of fearing God, showing its expression in the lives of Abraham and Joseph and providing instruction for believers today to maintain and increase their fear of God.

Table of Contents:

Predominance of the Fear of God in Biblical Thought
Definition of the Fear of God
Ingredients of the Fear of God
Source of the Fear of God
Relationship of the Fear of God to Our Conduct
How to Maintain and Increase the Fear of God
A Final Word to the Reader

Author

Albert N. Martin served as a pastor of Trinity Baptist Church of Montville, New Jersey for forty-six years. He now resides in western Michigan with his wife, Dorothy.

Endorsements

“The twenty-first-century church desperately needs this book. The fear of God is evaporating from our consciousness, and the effects are tragically public. I am convinced that Albert Martin is casting forth the seeds of the revival that we need in the nick of time. The Forgotten Fear of God is a comprehensive journey from Genesis to Revelation, tracing the rich contours of this pivotal doctrine. It is a feast full of surprises. We need the kind of revival that springs from the ‘godly fear’ of God. This book is a gift to the church in time of need. You will know and love God more after reading it.” — Scott Brown, president, National Center for Family-Integrated Churches

“There is arguably no better and no wiser voice to speak about the fear of God than Pastor Albert Martin. In this book you will find a wonderful balance of a solid biblical argument linked with a heart-piercing application for both the believer as well as the unbeliever. Pastor Martin handles this lost and controversial topic with a pastoral tenderness that is warm and inviting and highlights well that the fear of God is a doctrine which should draw us near to God in worship and awe, not cause us to run from Him. This book will move you to worship God and marvel at the work of Christ on our behalf all the more.” — Brian Croft, senior pastor, Auburndale Baptist Church; founder, Practical Shepherding; and senior fellow, Mathena Center for Church Revitalization, SBTS

“Professor John Murray once wrote, “The fear of God is the soul of godliness.” Well said! But what is the fear of God? And how does the Christian biblically express it? Thankfully, Reformation Heritage Books brings us a new work that answers these questions. Coming this October is a masterful treatment of this vital subject by Pastor Albert N. Martin, who sets forth the Bible’s teaching on this topic in ways that are clear, practical and motivating. Since the fear of God is a major theme from Genesis to Revelation, it is an enormous blessing to have this comprehensive exposition available. I highly recommend it.” – Rob Ventura

Jesus Before the Gospels: How the Earliest Christians Remembered, Changed, and Invented Their Stories of the Savior

Jesus Before the Gospels: How the Earliest Christians Remembered, Changed, and Invented Their Stories of the Savior

Bart D. Ehrman

The bestselling author of Misquoting Jesus, one of the most renowned and controversial Bible scholars in the world today examines oral tradition and its role in shaping the stories about Jesus we encounter in the New Testament—and ultimately in our understanding of Christianity.

Throughout much of human history, our most important stories were passed down orally—including the stories about Jesus before they became written down in the Gospels. In this fascinating and deeply researched work, leading Bible scholar Bart D. Ehrman investigates the role oral history has played in the New Testament—how the telling of these stories not only spread Jesus’ message but helped shape it.

A master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, Ehrman draws on a range of disciplines, including psychology and anthropology, to examine the role of memory in the creation of the Gospels. Explaining how oral tradition evolves based on the latest scientific research, he demonstrates how the act of telling and retelling impacts the story, the storyteller, and the listener—crucial insights that challenge our typical historical understanding of the silent period between when Jesus lived and died and when his stories began to be written down.

As he did in his previous books on religious scholarship, debates on New Testament authorship, and the existence of Jesus of Nazareth, Ehrman combines his deep knowledge and meticulous scholarship in a compelling and eye-opening narrative that will change the way we read and think about these sacred texts.

From Heaven Fought The Stars: A Biblical Adventure of Romance and War in the time of Deborah and Jael

From Heaven Fought The Stars: A Biblical Adventure of Romance and War in the time of Deborah and Jael

Joanne Szedlak

An Epic Biblical Battle Unfolds…

1262 BC

A warm swirl… a breath… a smile answered her thoughts, encircling her, cocooning her in a sense of peace… and love.

Within His presence Deborah was aware that all fear had left, as though it had been defeated by a greater master. She sat motionless, concerned lest she disturb the sacred air around her, that HE might leave.

However, when morning thrust its rosy fingers through the window, His presence was gone.

Still, the imprint of the previous night was firmly embedded in her being. From that moment she knew. Despite the fact that He was ultimately powerful and all-loving, change was coming bringing with it pain and death.

In this epic, biblical story of adventure, romance and war, each character must stand alone. Facing their demons each must choose courage and faith over fear and complacency.

Set in the beautiful and, at times, visceral setting of ancient Israel, “From Heaven Fought The Stars” is Joanne Szedlak’s first novel.

Using her rich knowledge of Judges and drawing from both her degrees in Christian Theology and Social Sciences, Joanne Szedlak is able weave an intricate tapestry of romance, adventure and mystery while still maintaining a historically accurate setting.

It is 1262 BC and darkness had already begun to spread its poisoned roots into the warm hues of Deborah’s world. Running for her life, Deborah is bereft, as Sisera, the tyrannical, Canaanite leader destroys everything she holds dear.

Empty and despairing, she takes the silver coil of hope that trails from Heaven’s chambers and witnesses the battle among the stars.

A seed is birthed, a promise spoken: she will be mother to a nation.

Join Deborah on her journey as she encounter’s Shamgar, simple farmer who in desperation calls upon his mother’s God, discovering strength and deliverance.

Meet Jael, a young, hot blooded nomad, forced to contemplate the power of choice: duty over desire.

Meanwhile, where shame and inadequacy had driven him to succeed, in surrender, Barak will discover the humility, integrity and courage to lead the most unlikely of armies into war.

Discover their true identities within the landscape of violence and chaos over which God, the artist, weaves his beauty and peace.

In a dysfunctional society where community is broken down and each man lives for himself, serving gods of wealth and pleasure, God raises women and men of humility and integrity to knit people back to Himself.

This is a story about the mother heart of God. About how, despite the flaws and blemishes of the past, God uses the most unlikely of people for His great purpose.

About the Author

Joanne Szedlak lives in Southampton, England with her four children and husband. She has degrees in both Christian theology and Social Science.

She is passionate about community and the vital, if sometimes overlooked, role women play in knitting together the foundation of our society.

She has been involved in church leadership, with this heart, for over twenty years.

Eleven Pipers Piping: A Father Christmas Mystery

Eleven Pipers Piping: A Father Christmas Mystery

C. C. Benison

The welcome return of C. C. Benison’s delectable series featuring Father Tom Christmas—“an irresistible addition to the ranks of clerical sleuths” (Julia Spencer-Fleming)

Father Tom Christmas, the recently widowed vicar adjusting to life in the English village of Thornford Regis, would do almost anything to avoid attending the annual Robert Burns Supper at the local hotel. But as chaplain to a traditional Scottish pipe band, Father Tom must deliver the grace—and contend with wailing bagpipes, whiskey-laced parishioners reciting poetry, and the culinary abomination that is haggis.

As snow falls to unprecedented depths, the revelers carry on—briefly interrupted by an enigmatic stranger seeking shelter. Then Will Moir, proprietor of the hotel and a dedicated piper, inexplicably goes missing—only to be found later in the hotel’s dark tower, alone and dead from what appears to be a heart attack.

Father Tom’s own heart sinks when he learns the actual cause of Will’s demise. When word gets out, the flurry of innocent speculation descends into outlandish gossip. And, for all its tranquil charm, Thornford Regis has plenty to gossip about—illicit trysts, muted violence, private sorrows, and old, unresolved tragedies. The question is: Who would benefit most from the piper’s death? Suspicion swirls around many, including Will’s beautiful widow, their shadowy son, Will’s obnoxious brother-in-law, and even the mysterious party crasher, who knows more than she lets on about the grudges she left behind—but never forgot.

Brimming with wit, full of genuine surprise, and featuring one of the most memorable (and unlikely) detectives in mystery fiction, C. C. Benison’s second Father Christmas mystery will delight readers with a puzzle that truly defies solution.
