Your Identity in Christ: 100 Powerful Reminders of Who You Truly Are in Jesus (Spiritual Growth by John Stange)

Your Identity in Christ: 100 Powerful Reminders of Who You Truly Are in Jesus (Spiritual Growth by John Stange)

John Stange

“Thanks for this great reminder of who I really am in Christ! I love to make a quick read through this book whenever I need a healthy dose of encouragement…”

Who are you?

This is one of the most important questions we all wrestle with in life. Just who are we? What is our identity? Who has God created us to be?

At different seasons in life, we probably struggle with this question more than others. When we’re young, we tend to adopt an identity based on our abilities or our reputation among our peers. As we grow older, we may try to base our sense of identity on our background, occupation, ethnicity or even the disabilities we suffer from or the trauma we have experienced. In our senior years, our identity can sometimes be centered around what we feel we accomplished in life or the kind of family we raised and how our children and grandchildren turned out.

Let me say that these are all faulty sources of identity and none of them answer the question of who we really are. Every one of these examples are circumstantial and while they may have been somewhat true of us for a time, they will not remain eternally accurate descriptions of us in Heaven. Our sense of identity should never be based on something that can change. Our sense of identity should never be based on something that we’ve done. What we’ve done and who we are are very different questions. By God’s design, the answer to the question, “Who am I?”, runs much deeper than many people realize.

The moment we trust in Jesus and receive His free gift of salvation, we are included into His family, given His name and blessed with a brand new identity. Scripture tells us that we become a “new creation” in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17).

Yet even though we have a new identity in Him, we often find ourselves living as if our identity is rooted in our flesh and in the things of this world. Even Christians can find themselves basing their sense of identity and worth on their background, education, accomplishments, family of origin, ethnic heritage and possessions. Unfortunately, this kind of thinking leads to discouragement and disillusionment and it shrinks the power of the Gospel and the reality of Christ’s presence in our lives.

Christ wants more for His people than that.

Throughout God’s Word, we are given many examples that powerfully remind us of our true identity in Christ. This is the lens we are to see ourselves through. This is who we need to remind ourselves that we truly are.

We aren’t who we once were. Our value isn’t based on worldly standards. Jesus has made us brand new people and our worth, sense of purpose and understanding of who we truly are and truly will be for all eternity is anchored solely in Him.

But we can be forgetful at times. We need to be reminded of the truth of our identity in Christ because it slips our mind. If we aren’t feeding our minds a steady diet of biblical truth, we end up gravitating toward the lies this world has been peddling for millennia.

I put this book together to serve as a reminder of the truth of Christ’s Gospel. Whenever you’re tempted to start wrapping your identity around ungodly things, I want you took look through these pages and experience a stimulation of your mind toward the truth.

You are not who this world says you are.

You are not who you have often told yourself you are.

You are not defined by your mistakes.

You are not defined by your experiences.

You are not defined by your accomplishments.

You are not defined by your behaviors.

You are not defined by your talents.

You are not defined by your earthly treasures.

The moment you trusted in Jesus, you were made brand new. Your real identity can only be found in Christ.

~

In the following pages, I will identify 100 powerful truths that Scripture reveals about your identity in Christ. I have also included biblical references for meditation and study.

Life Creative

Life Creative

Wendy Speake

A celebration of motherhood, creativity, and the faith that binds them

In our Pinterest age of handcrafted children’s parties, artistic Instagram photos, tutorials for renovating old furniture into new treasures, and blogs filled with poetry, prose, and other creative expression, it is clear that a brand-new generation of creative women is rising up. It is a renaissance born not in Italian cathedrals or Harlem jazz clubs but in kitchens and nurseries and living rooms around the world. But when Christian women become mothers, they often feel expected to lay down their creative pursuits in order to properly parent.

Wendy Speake and Kelli Stuart know that struggle. While they acknowledge that some seasons of mothering require setting artistic pursuits aside, they also argue that these seasons don’t have to last until empty nest time. Instead, mothers with creative gifts are called to actively use them in order to bless their families, their communities, and everyone they encounter.

Inspiring and encouraging, Life Creative celebrates the ways mothers can live their art in the midst of their mothering. They tell the stories of women such as author and speaker Angie Smith, recording artist Ellie Holcomb, and jewelry designer Lisa Leonard who do just that. By following God’s leading to embrace His gifts, renaissance moms can model the joy of obedience for their families.

Less: A Biblical Guide for Living Joyfully with Less Stuff

Less: A Biblical Guide for Living Joyfully with Less Stuff

Spencer Bernard

Does Scripture encourage us to live a simpler lifestyle?

After his mother passed away, Spencer Bernard and his sister cleared out his mother’s house. He was confronted with all his stuff from childhood, still kept in the bedroom where he grew from boy to man. Getting rid of those possessions—the treasures he hadn’t even looked at in years—was initially painful, but in the end the process felt freeing.

He and his sister donated useful items in his mother’s house to a charity that helps single mothers. That seemed fitting, since his mother had been a single mom.

The experience of sorting out his mother’s house spurred Bernard to learn more about minimalism, but he needed something more than blog posts to motivate him to action. Bernard, a pastor, realized that the lessons most meaningful to him had come from the Bible. He sought answers in Scripture.

“If you read the minimalism blogs, you’ll find that the point of simplifying isn’t just to tidy up. The purpose is to remove unneeded things so we can prioritize what’s most important. The goal is to live a richer and more satisfying life by clearing away the distractions. But as we’ll see, Jesus goes even further and deeper,” says Bernard.

In Less, a quick read enriched with anecdotes about guitars, snow blowers, and iPads as well as end-of-chapter questions to help the reader, Bernard discusses what is lost when we crowd our lives with stuff. He lays out a Biblical foundation to explain why abundant possessions can hinder an abundant life. “When looking at Scripture through a ‘minimalist’ lens, I find inspiration and power,” says the pastor. “I’m excited at the reasons the Lord gives us to live with less.”

Freedom from Fear: A Devotional Bible Study

Freedom from Fear: A Devotional Bible Study

Pauline Creeden

Fear is a cage. It closes us in and keeps us from living in freedom.

Some people get so overcome by fear that they cannot even leave their house. Phobias have become almost fashionable. We label our fears and hug them tightly to us as if they are things we need. We coddle them and keep them happy so they don’t destroy us, and the last thing we want to do is provoke them. That powerlessness is what keeps us from accomplishing great things in our lives, whether personally or for God’s kingdom.

In Freedom from Fear, we explore the keys to our freedom through faith and obedience to God’s word. With this book, you’ll learn to put your trust in God’s character and turn to him when you feel out of control.

The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith

The Rage Against God: How Atheism Led Me to Faith

Peter Hitchens

Here, for the first time, in his new book The Rage Against God, Peter Hitchens, brother of prominent atheist Christopher Hitchens, chronicles his personal journey through disbelief into a committed Christian faith. With unflinching openness and intellectual honesty, Hitchens describes the personal loss and philosophical curiosity that led him to burn his Bible at prep school and embrace atheism in its place. From there, he traces his experience as a journalist in Soviet Moscow, and the critical observations that left him with more questions than answers, and more despair than hope for how to live a meaningful life.

With first-hand insight into the blurring of the line between politics and the Church, Hitchens reveals the reasons why an honest assessment of Atheism cannot sustain disbelief in God. In the process, he provides hope for all believers who, in the words of T. S. Eliot, may discover “the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”

EXCERPT

Avalon gripped his free hand — the one not holding the camera — and leaned in. She said something more, but his gaze riveted on the front door as it opened once again.

Marisa. No one pulled off casual as elegantly as she did. Dark skinny jeans ended in over-the-knee boots. Gucci, if he wasn’t mistaken. A vibrant purple sweater allowed a coral top to peek out. Makeup today, just the right amount. And her hair, with loose curls tied back at the top.

Jase shifted around Avalon. Was she still talking? In just a few steps he’d reached Marisa’s side. “You came.” You’re gorgeous, he wanted to say. He’d told her before. He’d said more than that.

Way too much more at JFK.

“Hi, Jase. I see I found the right place.” She glanced around the entry hall, her gaze focusing on the parlor to her right. “In there, I assume?”

“Yes.” He backed up a step. Gave her space. She was here to sign up for Miss Snowflake. He’d see her often for the next two months. Have the privilege of shooting her. No need to push her today.

In those boots she nearly matched his height. Unlike the surprise meeting in the walking mall downtown, today she was on her game. She gave him a breezy smile, wiggled her fingers in his direction, and strode into the parlor as though it was a catwalk. A stage. All eyes trained on her.

From what he could see of the group in the parlor, it was true. His sister stood behind her desk with a big smile. “Marisa! Good to see you.” She winked at Jase.

He was sunk. Clammy hands gripped his camera. Buzzing circled his head. God had given him another chance. He couldn’t blow this one.

“Well, that certainly puts a new spin on things.” Avalon’s voice dashed over him like an Arctic wave.
