A Cup of Dust

A Cup of Dust

Susie Finkbeiner

Where you come from isn’t who you are.

Ten-year-old Pearl Spence is a daydreamer, playing make-believe to escape life in Oklahoma’s Dust Bowl in 1935. The Spences have their share of misfortune, but as the sheriff’s family, they’ve got more than most in this dry, desolate place. They’re who the town turns to when there’s a crisis or a need–and during these desperate times, there are plenty of both, even if half the town stands empty as people have packed up and moved on.
Pearl is proud of her loving, strong family, though she often wearies of tracking down her mentally impaired older sister or wrestling with her grandmother’s unshakable belief in a God who Pearl just isn’t sure she likes.
Then a mysterious man bent on revenge tramps into her town of Red River. Eddie is dangerous and he seems fixated on Pearl. When he reveals why he’s really there and shares a shocking secret involving the whole town, dust won’t be the only thing darkening Pearl’s world.
While the tone is suspenseful and often poignant, the subtle humor of Pearl’s voice keeps A Cup of Dust from becoming heavy-handed. Finkbeiner deftly paints a story of a family unit coming together despite fractures of distress threatening to pull them apart.

No More Bullies: For Those Who Wound or Are Wounded

No More Bullies: For Those Who Wound or Are Wounded

Frank E. Peretti

If you’ve ever been there, you’ve never forgotten how it feels. It’s being undersized or oversized or less than beautiful. It’s knowing you are vulnerable and that someone is ready to take advantage of your weakness. It’s the fraternity you never wanted to join-the fellowship of the wounded spirit. And Frank Peretti is a member, too.

In this powerful book, Frank Peretti shares his deeply personal story of growing up different, and the persecution he suffered because of it. And from this reservoir of memories he urges:

those being abused to speak up and seek help
those in authority to take notice- and action
the “strong” kids to stand up and protect the weak- not prey upon them
all of us to stop thinking of abuse as “normal” or as “kids being kids”

This groundbreaking work shows how we all – bullies and victims alike – can find both healing and forgiveness from the anguish and torment associated with the growing epidemic of bullying.

Praying Through the Prophets (The Complete Series)

Praying Through the Prophets (The Complete Series)

John Calvin

REVIEWS FOR THIS SERIES

Elsie wrote “Excellent prayers derived from the Scriptures. They are a wonderful help in praying and a delightful tool for understanding and growth.” – Review from Praying Through the Prophets Lamentations & Ezekiel

Darlene Hanfman wrote “There is such pleasure in reading the scriptures. I have purchased others and I know I will enjoy them also.” – Review from Praying through the Prophets: Habakkuk, Zephaniah & Haggai

Praying can be hard. It’s hard to make the time to pray. It’s hard to get up early, or go to bed later in an effort to draw close to God. It’s hard when there are so many other things demanding time and attention. And it’s especially hard when you are feeling spiritually dry and just don’t know what to say or where to start.

We all know that not praying and drawing close to God results in a very superficial relationship with Him. Yet so often we fall into the trap of putting other things first. If you are feeling spiritually dry and just know it is because you are not spending time with your God, this book is for you. If you long to draw close to your Saviour but you are struggling with the words to say, again, this book is for you.

The complete series of Praying Through the Prophets is now available in one volume

Praying Through the Prophets (The Complete Series) is a compilation of prayers taken from John Calvin’s commentaries on the Old Testament prophets. Each prayer has a scripture that can be read alongside, deepening your love and understanding for the Word. There is nothing so fulfilling as praying to God with a Bible open on your lap ready to listen and hear from Him.

Use these prayers as a springboard into your own prayer life. As you pray you will find yourself thinking of other things to pray about resulting in drawing close once again to your Savior. Putting God first and removing any idols that are taking His place will result in a wonderfully fulfilling relationship with the Lord, and which will have an impact on all around you.

The following is a prayer taken from the ‘Jeremiah & Lamentations’ volume

Jeremiah 1:8-12

Grant, Almighty God, that since thou art pleased kindly to invite us to thyself, and hast consecrated thy word for our salvation, – O grant that we may willingly, and from the heart, obey thee, and become so teachable, that what thou hast designed for our salvation may not turn to our perdition; but may that incorruptible seed by which thou dost regenerate us into a hope of the celestial life so drive its roots into our hearts, and bring forth fruit, that thy name may be glorified; and may we be so planted in the courts of thine house, that we may grow and flourish, and that fruit may appear through the whole course of our life, until we shall at length enjoy that blessed life which is laid up for us in heaven, through Christ our Lord. – Amen.

Strength to Care: Reflections for Parents of Children with Complex Medical and Special Needs

Strength to Care: Reflections for Parents of Children with Complex Medical and Special Needs

Kevin Troupe

When our third child Matthew was born with a rare genetic disorder it only changed what was important in life…that is, everything is a gift and it is up to us how we respond to what is presented to us in life. After overcoming the adjustments of life with a special needs child, we decided we were not done with having children. God has chosen to bless us with another child with the same genetic disorder even though it is almost statistically impossible. Isaac is now a part of our continuing story of faith, perseverance and joy.

I started sharing stories of our journey over five years ago in a blog title Lessons from Matthew. At first I thought sharing our story was a creative expression and a way to help others. What I have found it that it helps me just as much. It helps my wife and the rest of our family reach out and see people, hurting people more clearly and it helps to put our own struggles into perspective. In return, we are strengthened. We have become a voice of hope and encouragement as we talk and interact with doctors, nurses, caregivers and to the groups we have been asked to speak and share our story with. We have spent countless hours in surgery waiting rooms, much more time, measured in days and months in hospital rooms and immeasurably more hours with caregivers and nurses in our home over the past 14 years sharing our faith in words, but even more importantly in our actions and in serving through a listening ear and through loving people right where they are at. As it often turns out, we have been blessed just as much as Matthew and Isaac have touched many lives and have been embraced by thousands as they have laughed with us, cried with us and prayed us through each step of their lives.

Strength to Care – Reflections for Parents of Children with Complex Medical and Special Needs is a collection of stories, or lessons, that all share a common theme of a hospital stay, surgery, complication or just plain old life is really hard right now. It is our prayer that our journey encourages you and gives you strength to care more deeply and with more understanding as you take care of the ones who have been placed in your care.

Courageous Christianity: Dare to live a radical life

Courageous Christianity: Dare to live a radical life

David Martin

This book addresses the struggle and the courage it takes to crucify self, ego and pride so that you can put off your old man and put on the new man. It takes faith to be dead to sin, and it takes courage to have faith. Give yourself permission to walk by faith and not by sight. With courage you can now call yourself righteous, justified, and holy in Christ, no matter how you feel, as you die to self.
It takes courage to live a radical Christian life with all of your spirit, soul and body. And it takes radically strong convictions to have faith to call things into existence, when there is no physical evidence of it being there in the first place. Enjoy this book my friends.

Gospel: Recovering the Power that Made Christianity Revolutionary

Gospel: Recovering the Power that Made Christianity Revolutionary

J.D. Greear

Could the gospel be lost in evangelical churches? In this book, J.D. Greear shows how moralism and legalism have often eclipsed the gospel, even in conservative churches. Gospel cuts through the superficiality of religion and reacquaints you with the revolutionary truth of God’s gracious acceptance of us in Christ. The gospel is the power of God, and the only true source of joy, freedom, radical generosity, and audacious faith. The gospel produces in us what religion never could: a heart that desires God.

The book’s core is a “gospel prayer” by which you can saturate yourself in the gospel daily. Dwelling on the gospel will release in you new depths of passion for God and take you to new heights of obedience to Him. Gospel gives you an applicable, exciting vision of how God will use you to bring His healing to the world.

The Daughter's Walk: A Novel

The Daughter’s Walk: A Novel

Jane Kirkpatrick

A mother’s tragedy, a daughter’s desire and the 7000 mile journey that changed their lives.

In 1896 Norwegian American Helga Estby accepted a wager from the fashion industry to walk from Spokane, Washington to New York City within seven months in an effort to earn $10,000. Bringing along her nineteen year-old daughter Clara, the two made their way on the 3500-mile trek by following the railroad tracks and motivated by the money they needed to save the family farm. After returning home to the Estby farm more than a year later, Clara chose to walk on alone by leaving the family and changing her name. Her decisions initiated a more than 20-year separation from the only life she had known.

Historical fiction writer Jane Kirkpatrick picks up where the fact of the Estbys’ walk leaves off to explore Clara’s continued journey. What motivated Clara to take such a risk in an era when many women struggled with the issues of rights and independence? And what personal revelations brought Clara to the end of her lonely road? The Daughter’s Walk weaves personal history and fiction together to invite readers to consider their own journeys and family separations, to help determine what exile and forgiveness are truly about.

“Kirkpatrick has done impeccable homework, and what she recreates and what she imagines are wonderfully seamless. Readers see the times, the motives, the relationships that produce a chain of decisions and actions, all rendered with understatement. Kirkpatrick is a master at using fiction to illuminate history’s truths. This beautiful and compelling work of historical fiction deserves the widest possible audience.”
