They're Rugby Boys, Don't You Know?

They’re Rugby Boys, Don’t You Know?

Natalie Vellacott

An inspirational true story detailing how a Christian Police Sergeant from England joined the Logos Hope Missionary Ship and was forever changed when, in the Philippines, she unexpectedly encountered and fell in love with a group of street teenage boys addicted to a solvent called “rugby.” The author details the highlights and lowlights, ups and downs, trials and tribulations, successes and failures of the small team as they defied local attitudes to slowly and carefully befriend this sidelined and often detested minority.

You will read of hospital visitations, breaches of trust, criminal activity, gang fights and numerous disappointments.

Did their intervention make any dfference? Were the heartaches and struggles worthwhile? The answer may surprise you…

“As I approached the bridge leading back to the Logos Hope ship, I saw a lone figure standing in the shadows watching the people walking past. He was unsteady on his feet and rocking backwards and forwards holding a plastic bag in his hand. As I moved nearer, I saw it was Mark. He ran away when he saw me and tried to hide but didn’t get very far and so he sat on the ground, behind a large pillar, in the shadows, breathing heavily. I sat beside him on the ground, which was dirty and really stank, and when I put my arm around his shoulders I smelt the intoxicatingly strong smell of the solvent.

The boys had recently stopped taking “rugby” and had moved on to a door sealant called “Vuca Seal” which was stronger. It was all over him and he reeked of it. I covered my nose. I remember this was the only time where the thought ran through my mind that I could see how addiction to this smell was created because it was really intoxicating. I knew I needed to be careful not to breathe much of it in, but Mark was really very high. He was vacant and staring ahead, and then he began crying again as I tried to talk to him. I asked him why he was doing this to himself and what was it that had made him so unhappy, but he didn’t answer.

Mark got up and stumbled away as I watched him go. I followed and tried to talk to him again, sharing a bit of my life before I became a Christian and how miserable I had been. His hopelessness reminded me of my old life when I was immersed in drink, gambling and meaningless relationships. I knew Mark was listening as I shared the hope that I had found in Jesus with him, but he didn’t respond. Eventually, I had to leave him, alone and staring vacantly ahead of himself hanging over a railing. I was really worried that he wouldn’t make it through the night if he took any more solvents….”

The Beauty of Broken: My Story and Likely Yours Too

Elisa Morgan

Find beauty and hope by facing and dealing with the messiness of family life.

The family is an imperfect institution. Broken people become broken parents who make broken families. But actually, broken is normal and exactly where God wants us.

In The Beauty of Broken, Elisa Morgan, one of today’s most respected female Christian leaders, for the first time shares her very personal story of brokenness—from her first family of origin to the second, represented by her husband and two grown children. Over the years, Elisa’s family struggled privately with issues many parents must face, including:

alcoholism and drug addiction
infertility and adoption
teen pregnancy and abortion
divorce, homosexuality, and death

Each story layers onto the next to reveal the brokenness that comes into our lives without invitation. “We’ve bought into the myth of the perfect family,” says Elisa. “Formulaic promises about the family may have originated in well-meaning intentions, but such thinking isn’t realistic. It’s not helpful. It’s not even kind.”

Instead she offers hope in the form of “broken family values” that allow parents to grow and thrive with God. Values such as commitment, humility, relinquishment, and respect carry us to new places of understanding. Owning our brokenness shapes us into God’s best idea for us and enables us to discover the beauty in ourselves and each member of our family.

Life Interrupted: Navigating the Unexpected

Life Interrupted: Navigating the Unexpected

Priscilla Shirer

Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves.

The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. And it scared him enough to make him run in the opposite direction. Yet, what seemed to him to be an unnecessary and useless interruption was really an opportunity for Jonah to be involved in something the likes of which the Old Testament world had never seen before. This interruption was really a divine intervention and it held more adventure and possibility than he could have ever imagined.

We, like Jonah, tend to run from interruptions. When major pains and minor problems cause a hiccup in our carefully calculated plans and goals we head in the opposite direction. Who knows what we might be missing by running from what could very well be God’s means of steering us towards the most magnificent outcome of our lives. Jonah could tell us a story or two. So could you. And so does popular conference speaker and author Priscilla Shirer in this very personal account of opportunities lost and lessons learned—and the amazing freedom and fulfillment that comes from going with God even when He’s going against your grain.

Becoming Myself: Embracing God's Dream of You

Becoming Myself: Embracing God’s Dream of You

Stasi Eldredge

God has dreams—just for you

Becoming Myself is a hope-filled book for anyone who wonders if her life will ever change—if she will ever change. In Stasi Eldredge’s most intimate book yet, she shares her own struggles with self-worth, weight, and her past as she shows readers how God is faithfully unveiling who we truly are.

Stasi urges you to lay down your past thoughts about yourself and receive God’s incredible dreams for you instead. We cannot heal ourselves. We cannot become ourselves by ourselves. But we are not by ourselves.

The King of love wants to help us become. God desires to restore us—the real us. As he heals our inner life, he calls us to rise to the occasion of our lives. The most important journey any woman can take is the journey into becoming her true self through the love of God.

It’s a beautiful paradox. The more of God’s you become, the more yourself you become—the “self” he had in mind when he thought of you before the creation of the world.

Discover your truest self—the woman God created you to be—in Becoming Myself.

Stasi Eldredge’s heart was captured by God through the Sacred Romance and she has never gotten over it. Or rather, Him. She is the co-author (with her husband John) of the New York Times Bestselling book Captivating and Love & War. Their ministry, Ransomed Heart, has been used by God to transform the lives of men and women all over the world. They make their home in Colorado. The mother of three grown sons who no longer live in her home but take residence forever in her heart, Stasi is a writer and conference speaker passionate about women embracing the value of their heart and life to Jesus Christ and risking everything on that!

God's Not Dead: Evidence for God in an Age of Uncertainty

God’s Not Dead: Evidence for God in an Age of Uncertainty

Rice Broocks

The Evidence Behind the Hit Movie

The goal of God’s Not Dead: Evidence for God in an Age of Uncertainty is straightforward: to help readers develop “a faith that is real and credible—and strong enough to help others find faith in God.” To that end, Rice Broocks outlines a roadmap that guides seekers to acknowledge the most basic truths of Christianity:

There is overwhelming and exciting evidence for God’s existence
The God who exists is indeed the God of the Bible
God has revealed his nature through his Son, Jesus Christ

As shown during the movie, this is the original book on which the main character bases much of his debate points with the atheistic professor. Persuasive arguments crafted with tools borrowed from logic, science, and philosophy, as well as scripture, solidify the faith of the Christian reader and provide starting points for discussions with skeptics. With clear, easy-to-follow explanations of key concepts and controversies, God’s Not Dead is apologetics for the twenty-first century, presented in layman’s terms. Readers will be empowered not only to talk about their own faith with confidence but to lead others to a relationship with Jesus.

With: Reimagining the Way You Relate to God

With: Reimagining the Way You Relate to God

Skye Jethani

Stop Living Your Life Under, Over, From and For God and Start Living in Communion With Him.

Endorsements:

If we’ve grown weary of Christianity, if we find most any local church uninspiring, maybe the problem lies not in the Christian faith or these faithful bodies, but in our own disgruntled hearts. In With, Syke Jethani tenderly unmasks the clichéd posturing that too often masquerades as genuine communion with Christ. More importantly, he takes readers to the humble place they must occupy?in prayer, studying Scripture, with the Church?if faith, hope, and love are to truly mark our lives. -James H. Gilmore, author, The Experience Economy

Made of the stuff of spiritual classics and presented in simple, contemporary terms, Skye Jethani does each of us a great service in calling us to reimagine the way we relate to God. We so readily fall prey to living out distortions and reductions to our Christian faith?with disastrous consequences. You and I are far more than sinners, consumers, managers, and servants. We are dearly loved by God and made for eternal communion with him. Everything looks different when we live life in response to God’s love. -Paul Louis Metzger, Ph.D., Professor of Christian Theology & Theology of Culture, Multnomah Biblical Seminary and author of The Gospel of John: When Love Comes to Town

Cleverly using four prepositions—under, over, from, and for, Skye Jethani convincingly diagnoses the reigning paradigms of life?whether secular or religious—and shows how each one has captured some element of truth but in the end is deficient; Ultimately, they miss the most important thing—real communion with the living God. Thus utilizing one final preposition, With, he lays out what it really means to know and experience communion with God—a life of faith, hope and love?the very things that we all desperately want and need. This is a helpful, encouraging, and inspiring book. -Jim Belcher, author of Deep Church

It doesn’t matter, as old theologians were rumored to argue, how many angels can dance on a pinhead. But it does matter which preposition governs your faith?over, after, against, for, from, under, with. Who knew what huge worlds turn on such tiny words? Who knew what theological riches were laced into the bones of grammar? Skye has done a great service to the church. In prose elegant and clear, with insights keen and deep, he shows how everything changes with just one word: With. It’s a book I want my whole church to read. -Mark Buchanan, author of Spiritual Rhythm

Who knew that a preposition had so much influence? Skye’s book will challenge the way that you think about God and faith digging deep into our motivations and heart issues. You can’t read this book and not see yourself and others differently! -Margaret Feinberg, author of Scouting the Divine and Hungry for God

This book will do for our generation what J.B. Phillips, in his classic Your God is Too Small, did for his. With reveals views of God that can’t satisfy and opens up the possibility for exploring a life with God that more than satisfies. -Scot McKnight, author of One.Life and The Blue Parakeet, professor of theology and biblical studies at North Park University

Since I dove into With, I can’t stop thinking about it. Skye Jethani’s insights will change how you think about God…and you…and how the two of you relate. -Dr. Kara E. Powell, Executive Director of the Fuller Youth Institute
