The Promise: A Tragic Accident, a Paralyzed Bride, and the Power of Love, Loyalty, and Friendship

The Promise: A Tragic Accident, a Paralyzed Bride, and the Power of Love, Loyalty, and Friendship

Rachelle Friedman

I didn’t want to put this book down. There were times when I cried, times when I laughed, but most of all there were times when I was amazed by Rachelle’s strength, her loyalty, and her understanding of the importance of friendship and love! I can’t wait to see her interviews and to hear “the rest of the story”.

Kay Gillis

A New York Times Bestseller!

Just weeks before her wedding, four of Rachelle Friedman’s friends threw her a bachelorette party. At the end of a perfect evening of dancing and celebration, they decided to take a moonlight swim. One of her friends playfully pushed her into the water . . . two feet too far from the deep end. That chilling moment changed their lives forever. Rachelle broke her neck and was paralyzed from the chest down. She would never walk again.

The Promise is a powerful memoir of resilience, love, and loyalty. On the night of the accident, the five girls made an unspoken agreement to never reveal the name of the friend who had pushed Rachelle into the pool—and their bond has remained unbroken. As Rachelle undergoes a physical battle for her life, her friend struggles emotionally to prevent one moment in time from defining her forever. It’s the story of true integrity; it’s also about finding the incredible strength inside each of us we never knew we had.

Also a love story, The Promise chronicles Rachelle and Chris’s relationship, their struggle with her paralysis and rehab, the physical challenges of intimacy, and ultimately, their fairy-tale wedding.

Calvinism in the Las Vegas Airport: Making Connections in Today's World

Calvinism in the Las Vegas Airport: Making Connections in Today’s World

Richard J. Mouw

Great read! Love Mouw’s starting point of a George C. Scott film, and the journey he takes us through the book, discussing the Reformed tradition in general and Calvinism in particular.

Brooks David Darrah

What do the Canons of Dordt mean to people in the Las Vegas airport—and does anyone there even care? In the movie Hardcore, a pious Calvinist elder tries unsuccessfully to explain the TULIP theology of his Dutch Reformed faith to a prostitute in the Las Vegas airport. This incongruous conversation demonstrates how Calvinism is often perceived today: irrelevant, harsh, even disrespectful.

Beginning with this movie scene, Calvinism in the Las Vegas Airport addresses the weaknesses of Calvinism and points to its strengths. How does Calvinism shed light on today? Instead of reciting the Canons of Dordt, what’s a more compassionate way to relate to nonbelievers? What might it look like to live out the doctrines of TULIP with gentleness and respect? This conversational book provides answers and shatters some stereotypes.

Calvinism in the Las Vegas Airport encourages you to live every aspect of life—business, family, education, politics, activities, and more—before the face of a generous, sovereign God. Calvinists and non-Calvinists alike will find this an enjoyable read. You will discover that Reformed theology can speak relevantly and compellingly today, both to you and to people in the Las Vegas airport.

Does Calvinism Have Anything to Do with the 21st Century?

What do you think about Calvinism? Do you view it positively or negatively? Or has its day passed?

Let’s face it, many non-Calvinists hold a less-than-positive view, sometimes due to caricatures. This friendly, conversational book helps clear up some misconceptions and distorted views. If you’re not a Calvinist, here is an engaging inside look. And if you are a Calvinist, Richard Mouw shows how to live gently and respectfully with others—Christians and non-Christians—who hold different perspectives.

Calvinism in the Las Vegas Airport focuses not on what Calvinists believe but on how they live. From a movie scene to the author’s personal experiences in Las Vegas, you are invited to travel with Mouw and see the Reformed faith in a new light. Yes, it still does travel well!

Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet: Tasting the Goodness of God in All Things

Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet: Tasting the Goodness of God in All Things

Sara Hagerty

I would recommend this for a Christian audience primarily, especially for mature Christians. It has deep, intense themes. For me it was a very emotional read. I’d have to stop and cry and continually reread passages because they affected me so deeply.

O. Brown

In the age of fingertip access to answers and a limitless supply of ambitions, where do we find the God who was birthed in dirt and straw? Sara Hagerty found him when life stopped working for her. She found him when she was a young adult mired in spiritual busyness and when she was a new bride with doubts about whether her fledgling marriage would survive. She found him alone in the night as she cradled her longing for babies who did not come. She found him as she kissed the faces of children on another continent who had lived years without a mommy’s touch.

In Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet, Hagerty masterfully draws from the narrative of her life to craft a mosaic of a God who leans into broken stories. Here readers see a God who is present in every changing circumstance. Most significantly, they see a God who is present in every unchanging circumstance as well.

Whatever lost expectations readers are facing—in family, career, singleness, or marriage—Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet will bring them closer to a God who longs for them to know him more. What does it look like to know God’s nearness when life breaks? What does it mean to receive his life when earthly life remains barren? How can God turn the bitterness of unmet desire into new flavors of joy?

With exquisite storytelling and reflection, Hagerty brings readers back to hope, back to healing, back to a place that God is holding for them alone—a place where the unseen is more real than what the eye can perceive. A place where every bitter thing is sweet

The cover of this book drew me in, but I bought it based on the endorsements of Laura Frantz, mainly, but also Julie Klassen, Carrie Turansky and Mary Lu Tyndall. I love these authors and thought if they liked it, it was worth my time and money to read the book.

A beautiful story of love, friendship, and how God’s miracles come in all shapes and sizes, working together to form something amazing! So many different stories and each one will impact your life somehow.

kara Cottrell

The Coach House Trailer Park is the last stop for most of its residents. But a new girl sweeps into the neighborhood, charming them all with her wild nature, her elderberry gifts, and her outrageous laughter. What brings the mysterious Willow Goodhope of ELDERBERRY CROFT to this dead end place? From what—or whom—is she hiding?
Originally written as a serial novel, ELDERBERRY CROFT is the tale of one woman’s journey toward HOPE and HEALING, and the people whose lives she transforms along the way.

JANUARY BREEZE: There’s a new girl in town, and she’s breathing life into The Coach House Trailer Park, starting with the tiny cottage she christens Elderberry Croft. Kathy isn’t so sure about this wild child living across the way, with her generosity and exuberance for life. What is Willow Goodhope doing in a place like The Coach House?

FEBRUARY EMBERS: Richard and Patti Davis’ days stretch out endlessly before them, but lately, Richard has taken notice of the new neighbor in Space #12. Will Patti lose the only man she’s ever loved to the green-eyed earth girl? Or will Willow steal both their hearts?

MARCH WHISPERS: Joe Sanderson believes that living simply is simply better living. He gardens, he cooks, he entertains Vivian. Everything is going just fine…then along comes Ms. Willow, with her whispering shadows and her elderberry pie, reminding him of what it means to be a man.

APRIL SHADOWS: The Cat Lady rarely sets foot outside her trailer during the light of day. But one morning, Willow shows up at her door, knocking her perfectly-ordered world off its axis. And when the stillness is further interrupted by the Shadowman, Shelly must confront her past in order to embrace her future.

MAY ENCHANTMENT: Managing The Coach House keeps Eddie busy, if not exactly fulfilled. But the new girl, with her red hair and crazy laugh, is stirring up the neighborhood. Willow’s making waves, and Eddie’s a little swept off his feet, too. When he comes face to face with the Shadowman in the middle of the night, Eddie questions everything he thought he knew about himself.

JUNE MELODY: Myra believes her doctor when he says she’s going to die, but when she encounters a deadly rattlesnake, she realizes that maybe she needs to start living again, rather than spending her last years sitting around waiting to die.

JULY MADNESS: Donny Banks is trouble with a big T. Edith keeps hoping if she helps her baby out one more time, he’ll get his head on straight. But big brother Eddie has had enough. This time, Donny’s knocking on the wrong door—one that belongs to Willow—and Eddie’s having none of it.

AUGUST MEMORIES: Al’s job keeps him busy during the day, and his Bud keeps him company at night. But Al is a prisoner of his past, and when one phone call changes his future, Al must choose to do the right thing. To his surprise, Willow Goodhope may just hold the key that will set him free.

SEPTEMBER LONGING: Prudence loves animal prints, big hair, and red nails. She also loves her man, Carney, but is beginning to wonder if he feels the same about her. When Willow Goodhope shows up needing a friend, Prudence gets the chance to reevaluate what’s important when it comes to matters of the heart.

OCTOBER MOURNING: The baby growing in Andrea’s womb is a miracle, and she marvels at the way she’s changing from the inside out. But when faced with the knowledge that she can no longer manage on her own, will her pride allow her to receive help from Willow?

NOVEMBER AWAKENING: A Vietnam Vet, Doc suffers from severe post-traumatic stress, debilitating episodes that send him back to the bottle time and time again. When he discovers Willow on the verge of giving in to her own despair, he finds unexpected solace in stepping outside his comfort zone to comfort her.

DECEMBER DAWNING: It’s been almost a year since Willow moved into Elderberry Croft, and she can no longer ignore the shadows that drove her here. Is there hope for a new tomorrow?

Shadows & Secrets (Annals of Wynnewood Book 1)

Shadows & Secrets (Annals of Wynnewood Book 1)

Chautona Havig

This book was very well written and had an exciting storyline that kept me reading. The character development was well done, so much that when I reached the end of each book, I felt as if I knew the characters personally. It was extremely refreshing to read a book in which the characters were not fawning all over each other, spouting expletives, and getting into inappropriate situations which no reader, young and old alike, shoud be filling their minds with. All in all, I look forward to reading more from Chautona Havig.

Terry Circle

No one knows what the cloaked creature is or why it is so terrifying. The villagers of Wynnewood only know that they must stay away from ‘the creature’ for fear of their physical and spiritual safety. Follow Philip and the creature as they rescue a lame child, discover ‘pirate treasure’, and test the mettle of true friendship Shadows & Secrets is the first book in the Annals of Wynnewood
