Aundy: (A Sweet Western Historical Romance) (Pendleton Petticoats Series Book 1)
Aundy, 21, is a feisty character with plenty of common sense and courage. She deals with life as it comes.
She accepts a mail-order marriage proposal and leaves Chicago for Oregon. She is pleasantly surprised when she meets Erik, a farmer of 39 with a kind manner and clearly very good intentions of being a good husband to her. As the book description says, she very quickly becomes a widow and the start of the book is very sad.
She decides to work hard to keep the farm in Erik’s honour and faces several hurdles, from men who won’t work for a woman to threats and attempts to drive her out.
She is helped by her neighbours, the Nash family and develops a bond with Garrett Nash, the son. She never wants to marry again, convinced that she brings only bad luck.
The story is centred around their growing feelings for each other and the people in the community, with plenty of events and turns to keep the plot interesting.
Born and raised at Nash’s Folly, the family ranch, Garrett Nash loves life in the bustling community of Pendleton as the 20th century approaches.
When his neighbor passes away and leaves behind a plucky widow, Garrett takes on the role of her protector and guardian. His admiration for her tenacious spirit soon turns to something more. He just needs to convince the strong-willed woman to give love another chance.

This book hooked me in the introduction with the line “Unless the people of my generation take the time to equip you, our young people, with spiritual courage, the church is always just one generation from extinction.”
There are 4 sections and 10 total chapters. Each chapter has questions at the end and each section has a recap page. These would be really useful in a group setting.
The first section “Courageous Faith” is about learning to trust God. It uses a lot from the life of Abraham to teach. It encourages teens to find what motivates them and to find courage regarding facing a future that we don’t always plan for our selves. It uses the examples of Esther and Joseph.
The second section “Courageous Leadership” is about a personal relationship with God, finding courage to lead and be a humble hero. It used Joshua and Moses as some of the examples. I like the inclusion of Gideon here. That’s a study in learning to be humble and let God have all the glory!!
The third section “Courageous Priorities” is about doing what’s right. This is probably the hardest lesson for teens. So many are pulled in so many directions. It’s good to ground yourself in your faith and let that be your guide. Examples are Elijah, Martin Luther and Moses. The chapter on facing persecution is, I’m afraid, going to be more and more relevant to teens. The Biblical example is Stephen.
The final section “Courageous Influence” is about taking what’s been learned so far and using it to reach others. I like that this section uses modern examples as well as Nehemiah and Paul. The chapter regarding mentoring has really touched my heart and given me a desire to reach out to the youth in our church.
This is a powerful book, with a powerful message. I cannot wait to hand it to one of the youth group leaders at church and suggest that this be the Spring Bible study.
I received a copy of the book in exchange for a review. No additional compensation has been received and I was not required to write a positive review.
Catt brings fresh insight to “stories of people in the Bible who displayed great courage when it would have been easier to play it safe . . . (who) challenge me to keep moving forward. They demand that I examine my priorities and deal with anything that brings fear to my heart.”
Teen readers will be inspired to resolve to live for God as they learn more about Abraham, Moses, Nehemiah, Ruth, Daniel, and many more.
Best-selling youth market author Amy Parker arranges the heart-stirring material into four categories: Courageous Faith, Courageous Leadership, Courageous Priorities, and Courageous Influence. Discussion questions are also included at the end of each chapter.

I Will Carry You: The Sacred Dance of Grief and Joy
I “met” Angie through her blog just a few short weeks after the death of my 15 year old daughter Rachel on April 28, 2009. Angie’s journey is intimate, transparent and one that glorifies Him. This book is for anyone who has lost a child, I will be sharing it with some mother’s that share our loss. The “Sacred Dance of Grief and Joy” is just that a dance… a dance with the ONE longs to comfort us. I too am an “injured dancer, and yet one who wants her life to bring glory to the one who allowed sorrow and joy to dance at all.” Thank you Angie for sharing Audrey with us and yes she is changing the world. I know that she has changed me!

What Happened to My Little Girl?: Dad’s Ultimate Guide to His Tween Daughter
Over all, if you’re a dad of a tween daughter (or daughters, like me), this is an excellent handbook. If I could do so, I’d have this with me at all times. Next time my daughter bursts into tears or rolls her eyes at me, I can whip out the book, flip to the right page, and know EXACTLY what I need to do… or not. Don’t want to get the “DAAAAAAAD!” voice, either.
In any case, the last chapter of the book, as I mentioned above, gives me hope. Jim Rue was not a model father either (something that gives great credibility to the advice of the book, learning from mistakes), but the letter that he shares from his now 30-year-old daughter tells all fathers that, no matter the screw-ups, as long as your daughter KNOWS you love her and you do your best to show it, she appreciates you and that you tried. God can redeem even the major faux pas of the past.
Let tween expert Nancy Rue, and her husband, Jim, guide you in helping your daughter live as a girl-child rather than a mini-teenager. Empower her in spiritually sound behaviors as the rate of aggression rises among tween females. Show your daughter how to not only avoid but take a stand on the twisted parts of her culture such as peer abuse, shallow consumerism, and an unrealistic sense of entitlement. Give her alternatives to the toxic media, and encourage her to become part of something bigger than herself through charitable, God-centered activities. Learn to model the growth of a deep, personal connection with God, which makes all of the above not only possible, but probable.
In the midst of a world saturated with poisonous role models, it is possible to raise your daughter to be a respectful, confident, God-centered, young woman.

One Thousand Gifts Devotional: Reflections on Finding Everyday Graces
Bestselling author, Ann Voskamp delivers another inspirational journal that is not only a page-turner, but a helpful compassionate guide on how to once again smell the roses that we so often don’t have time for as we become so wrapped-up in our daily lives, that become filled with everyday stress of life’s commands and demands. She gently walks us through our own hectic lives, reminding us of drama, debt, and irritating issues that seem to control every moment as we are reminded to re-evaluate and what to focus on to give us rewarding peace and tranquility. The author paints a colorful portrait of several reflections, while we focus on how to be thankful in helping not only ourselves, but others as well. Ann Voskamp conveys the importance of not changing your life entirely, but teaches us the key elements to happiness and peace of mind as we think in a more positive frame of mind. This spiritual guide enlightens the world in which we live, and teaches us how to dwell more on the simple things that continue to bring joy and pleasure. There are interesting topics for reflection on this delightful leap of faith in a more enjoyable atmosphere. I have read the work of this author before, and she does not disappoint on a mission of healing and pure inspiration that makes you feel good as you see the light in her perspective of happiness, not only for yourself, but for others as we begin to appreciate the beauty of so many things that exist that we haven’t seen before. A heartwarming, comforting, enjoyable read. This is a book that I’d read again-and-again, especially on those occasions that I may need an uplifting spirit to guide the way. Highly recommended, and a great gift idea to family and friends, who enjoy inspiration!
The endless grace of our overflowing God, it’s meant to be experienced directly. The most important thing is simply to begin.
Pick up a pen and this book — and change your life. Take the dare to fully live!

I read this book with tears in my eyes for not only the sad but for the happy parts. I can not wait to share this book with other friends and their children. Thank you for letting us know what Dogtown could really be like for our dogs.

The Big Picture of What God Always Wanted
The Big Picture of What God has Always Wanted came along at the perfect time in my home! At four and five my kids have been asking a lot of questions about God and the Bible and while I know I what I believe, it’s not always easy to articulate to kids that young.
I remember as a kid that heaven and God were so out of reach to my understanding. As soon as I read the Note to Parents and Teachers at the beginning of this book, I had found a great tool.
The illustrations are great and help the kids to see the kind, gracious picture of Jesus that we want them to have in their head. It also brings to life Bible stories they have become familiar with and gives them a visual to go along with what they are already know.
What I really appreciated was the sections at the end like “What About You?” that applies what was read to kids on their level. It’s not always easy to find the words so this was beyond helpful to me. There is also a glossary that breaks down for kids big scary words in terms they can comprehend.
The Big Picture of what God has Always Wanted is a priceless overview of the Bible for little ones and would make a great gift this holiday season!
More than a children’s book, The Big Picture of What God Has Always Wanted is for parents who care deeply about passing on a legacy of faith in Christ to the next generation – parents who invite children to “ask Jesus into your heart.” But what does that phrase really mean? And is it biblical?
Author Charles F. Boyd has found that when asked, many children don’t understand that this phrase is symbolic. Seeing this disconnect between a grown-up’s metaphor and a child’s understanding, he writes here to help children understand the simple Gospel message: God desires to live in friendship with the people He created, now and forever. Boyd also shares the big-picture story of the Bible, from Genesis through Revelation.

Welcome to Last Chance (A Place to Call Home Book #1)
I loved Lainie. When she discovered that she was in a situation that she didn’t like – rather than staying to try to change her boyfriend – she packed up and left. Something I think not a lot of young girls would do. Especially ones that didn’t have anywhere else they could call home. When she arrived in Last Chance, she was cautious, but she was not afraid of work. She was a good person who had just not had a perfect life.
Like the people of Last Chance, this book was warm and welcoming and presented the gospel in a very laid back way. For them it was just a fact of life – something they lived every day. They did not need to rub your face in it. Now don’t get me wrong – Last Chance had some characters that weren’t living the life they should, and even had some Christians whose heart was in the right place even if what came out of their mouths sometimes wasn’t.
I thought it was a very strong debut novel and will happily read whatever Cathleen Armstrong comes out with next.
Yet in spite of herself, Lainie finds that she is increasingly drawn in to the dramas of small town life. An old church lady who always has room for a stranger. A handsome bartender with a secret life. A single mom running her diner and worrying over her teenage son. Could Lainie actually make a life in this little hick town? Or will the past catch up to her even here in the middle of nowhere?
Cathleen Armstrong pens a debut novel filled with complex, lovable characters making their way through life and relationships the best they can. Her evocative descriptions, observational humor, and talent at rendering romantic scenes will earn her many fans.

It was very easy for me to relate with Jill King. Her dreams crashed in a subway accident in the previous year. She loves Greg Bradford and wants to support him as he runs for political office. As she deals with the past and begins moving forward in her relationship with Greg and in her life, she experiences a terrifying dream. She isn’t sure whether she is going crazy but knows she has to tell people of her beloved town of the pending danger.
The authors do a great job giving you the back story while moving you forward at a good pace. The interactions between characters is very believable and rings of what life would be like for Jill after facing the lost of her dream life to have it replaced by a recurring nightmare.
This book caused me to pause and take a look at how I would react if I were Jill or if someone close to me were Jill. Especially in the United States we tend to be very cynical and closed minded to things we don’t understand and are quick to label someone as a “nut job.”
This is a wonderful story of love and commitment and in stepping out of one’s comfort zone to take a risk. At the end of the book the authors give you a website you can go and read the original ending to the story. I would encourage you to do that only after you read the published ending. I read the alternate ending last night and I’m still not sure how I would have reacted if they ended the story with that ending.
But another dream is about to come to life—an unexpected, horrifying dream that will present Jill with a responsibility she never wanted. And choices she never wanted to make.
Hundreds of lives depend on Jill’s willingness to warn her small, oceanside town in Nova Scotia of a nameless, looming disaster. But doing so could cost Jill her reputation, jeopardize the political career of the man she loves, and ruin their plans for a future together.
The fate of an entire community hangs in the balance as Jill wrestles with the cost of heeding one still, small voice.

I loved this whole series. I do feel that Morris sometimes wraps up his stories a little too quickly, leaving out much of the process we see in real life. But for those who love to read about past eras, especially the 1920s and 1930s, this series is definitely a winner.
