Doesn’t She Look Natural? (The Fairlawn Series Book 1)

Angela Hunt

I really enjoyed reading this book. It gives an excellent vantage point of many life changes and how God shapes our journey. Also let us in as the reader on the care given to loved ones. I’m reading the next in the series “She Always Wore Red” very good so far as well.

Penny

In this new series by best-selling author Angela Hunt, readers will meet Jennifer Graham, the no-nonsense chief of staff for a Virginia senator who quits her job after a divorce and finds herself an unemployed single mom. One Light Still Shines: My Life Beyond the Shadow of the Amish Schoolhouse Shooting

One Light Still Shines: My Life Beyond the Shadow of the Amish Schoolhouse Shooting

Marie Monville

This book has touched my heart. Marie Monville fills the pages with artful illustrations that the Illustrator of life wrote into her life. So blessed to have read this story & thankful that she chose not only to share it but to see his work in her life even in great tragedy.

Mrs.Goose

“My story is not about my past, but about your future,” says Marie Roberts Monville.

In the startling tragedy of the Amish schoolhouse shooting at Nickel Mines, one story has never been told; Marie Roberts Monville, the wife of the man who created such horror, tells her story for the very first time. It is a story of sorrow and destruction, but also one of majestic deliverance, unending compassion, breathtaking forgiveness, and grace-filled redemption.

Within a solitary moment, Marie Monville realized that life, as she knew it, was over. What she never anticipated was a tangible encounter with God reaching into her circumstances, through them rewriting all she believed about herself, her faith, and the God she thought she knew. One Light Still Shines reveals three love stories: the innocent love of a devoted wife for a husband in pain, the incomprehensible love of God in the aftermath of massacre and destruction, and the redemptive love of Christ, waiting to unfold in the life of every person who reads this book.

Marie’s journey since that darkest of days has been invaded with light which shines through these pages into the darkest questions we all face–questions about our past, our value, our identity, and own powerlessness in this fallen world. Come face to face with the Power behind every answer—a love that begs to be received.

Prayer

Prayer

Philip Yancey

I have enjoyed Philip Yancey’s book for three reasons. Firstly, he is an excellent wordsmith and it was enjoyable to read his writing. Secondly, this book is full of interesting anecdotes and reports about the Christianity in different parts of the world because he has a journalist’s instinct for seeing the big picture. Finally, he is honest about his struggle with praying and how much time he spent on it.

Alex Yang

In this six-session ZondervanGroupware™ video curriculum, award-winning author Philip Yancey probes the very heartbeat—the most fundamental, challenging, perplexing, and deeply rewarding aspect—of our relationship with God: prayer. What is prayer? How does it work? And more importantly, does it work? In theory, prayer is the essential human act, a priceless point of contact between us and the God of the universe. In practice, prayer is often frustrating, confusing, and fraught with mystery. Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? is an exploration of the mysterious intersection where God and humans meet and relate. Yancey explores such questions as: •Is God listening? •Why should God care about me? •If God knows everything, what’s the point of prayer? •Why do answers to prayer seem so inconsistent and capricious? •Why does God seem sometimes close and sometimes far away? •How can I make prayer more satisfying? The Prayer DVD and Prayer participant’s guide are available separately.

Permission Granted: And Other Thoughts on Living Graciously Among Sinners and Saints

Permission Granted: And Other Thoughts on Living Graciously Among Sinners and Saints

Margot Starbuck

This book is honest, forthright yet kind and the title so aptly sums it all up, she grants us permission to live with grace. I received this book a month ago and still find myself smiling and wondering and ready to act. I HIGHLY recommend this resource

T. Bianchi “Tracey”

Ordained as a Presbyterian pastor, and wife of a former pastor, Margot Starbuck had a hunch that authentic love for those who’ve traditionally been marginalized by the Church looked diametrically different than the placard-waving Christians in the media spotlight had made it appear. She wanted to catch a glimpse of the kind of grace that would actually be received by those in bars, strip clubs, a tent community, and at drag queen bingo. Scouring the Gospels for the Jesus who felt as uncomfortable as she did around disreputable sinners, Margot was surprised to find no record of him there. And though she set out searching for a warm and fuzzy kind of “love,” she ended up encountering the person of Jesus in a way she’s not known him before.

Permission Granted is a passionate and liberating call to believers to truly love sinners as Jesus does. With wit and clarity of insight, Margot shows readers that there are no “special sinners” who are worse or more deserving of contempt and judgment than others, and challenges them to a radical acceptance of sinners.

Courageous Teens

Courageous Teens

Michael Catt, Amy Parker

The book was an easy read, with so much practical application. The book also brings together great messages that I know that I would want my daughter to learn about once she was a teen. This is a great book that will inspire and motivate all who read!

Dad of Divas

Courageous Teens is a student-focused presentation of Courageous Living by Michael Catt, senior pastor of Sherwood Baptist Church and executive producer of the hit film Courageous.

Catt brings fresh insight to “stories of people in the Bible who displayed great courage when it would have been easier to play it safe . . . (who) challenge me to keep moving forward. They demand that I examine my priorities and deal with anything that brings fear to my heart.”

Teen readers will be inspired to resolve to live for God as they learn more about Abraham, Moses, Nehemiah, Ruth, Daniel, and many more.

Best-selling youth market author Amy Parker arranges the heart-stirring material into four categories: Courageous Faith, Courageous Leadership, Courageous Priorities, and Courageous Influence. Discussion questions are also included at the end of each chapter.

10 Things For Teen Girls

10 Things For Teen Girls

Kate Conner

The world is run by teen girls: parents of teen girls, teachers of teen girls, boys trying to date teen girls, feminists who want to empower teen girls, companies trying to sell things to teen girls, and people who have had it “up to here” with teen girls. Chances are if you’re reading this, there is a young woman in your life for whom you desire the very best, and 10 Things for Teen Girls can help with that.

Based on student minister Kate Conner’s runaway blog post, this book answers a lot of important questions: Why should I follow my heart? Should I care what other people think of me? Why are boys only interested in my body? How do I handle my emotions? Am I beautiful? Am I enough?

Teen girls have already heard the typical shtick about how they need to dress modestly, or how they shouldn’t care what others think of them, but it doesn’t suffice. Rooted in biblical wisdom and interspersed with candid stories of the modern teenage experience, Conner’s imparts common (and all too uncommon) sense.

Chautona Havig

This book is a must read for all. Chautona Havig has truly truly outdone herself with this book and touching on topics that we as parents struggle with daily.

Jaime

“I’m saying that I’m not going to trash someone else’s reputation in a futile attempt to restore mine. Everyone would believe her. Why shouldn’t they? It’s probably the only lie she’s ever told in her life. Just happens to be the lie that ruined mine.”

Words have power. Add a solid reputation behind those words, and they have the power to destroy.

It began with a lie.

Mac’s life changed irrevocably with a false accusation. Blissfully unaware of the carnage she left behind when she moved from Brant’s Corners, Savannah Forrester is back and when Mac sees her at church–with a boy–he wants answers.

For eight years he’s lived under the cloud of her accusations–without defending himself. He kept her secret. He endured the shame and the life-altering consequences.

Savannah can set the record straight. Mac says no. The ultimate question remains: what is best for Rory.

And who is Rory really?

Take the Trophy and Run (A Bloomfield Novel)

Take the Trophy and Run (A Bloomfield Novel)

Gail Sattler

Gail has a light touch with the humor and romance, blending the two into a lovely story. If you like cozy mysteries with a dash of boy-girl-next-door romance, you’ll love Take the Trophy and Run.

Sarah Hamaker

Like Mitford and Lake Wobegon before that, Bloomfield is a place we could all call home. Here, the residents enjoy a splash fountain in the town square, dine at the “Fancy Schmantsy” on tree-lined Main Street, and dream of reaching the 10,000 population mark — only 22 more folks to go!

The Bloomfield Garden Club, an all-ages group of lovable oddballs that will stop at nothing to make everything beautiful, maintains this piece of heaven on earth. But even such idyllic places as this have their share of
dramatic characters and stories to be told.

Take, for instance, craft store owner Amber Weathersby. She wants to be a member of the garden club but has never received the blessing of a green thumb. Her friend, Stan the mechanic, has helped as much as he can — even adding a timed sprinkler system to Amber’s garden — but the results never live up to the club’s expectations.

Her only claim to fame with that gang is her semi-famous garden gnome, Gnorman, who gets to hold the prized trophy each year in the Bloomfield Spring Fling contest’s winning garden.

But this year, instead of being the life of the party, her little star is gnomegnapped, and worse, the club’s irreplaceable trophy has gone missing with him. While Amber is chasing the gnome around town trying to win the trophy, Stan is chasing Amber, trying to win her heart.

Woman's Place, A: A Novel

Woman’s Place, A: A Novel

Lynn Austin

This was a very satisfying book. Lynn Austin captured the call to arms through the lives of these women who wanted to participate in the war effort. Each of their stories reflects how they faced discrimination and conflict in a time when the roles of men and women were changing.

Armchair Interviews

They watched their sons, their brothers, and their husbands enlist to fight a growing menace across the seas. And when their nation asked, they answered the call as well. Virginia longs to find a purpose beyond others’ expectations. Helen is driven by a loneliness money can’t fulfill. Rosa is desperate to flee her in-laws’ rules. Jean hopes to prove herself in a man’s world. Under the storm clouds of destruction that threaten America during the early 1940s, this unlikely gathering of women will experience life in sometimes starling new ways as their beliefs are challenged and they struggle toward a new understanding of what love and sacrifice truly mean.

Simple Song, A: A Novel

Simple Song, A: A Novel

Melody Carlson

A Simple Song is a good read for young adults and teens that can also be enjoyed by more “mature” adult Amish fiction fans. The characters and story line take a contemporary path (one that may be a little out of the norm for most Amish stories) that should appeal particularly to a younger audience. This could be a good story for introducing younger readers to the genre.

Pamela A. Burke

Katrina Yoder loves to sing, but her Amish parents view singing as vainglory and a sin. Katrina’s best friend, Bekka, is convinced Katrina should try out for American Star, a televised singing competition that Bekka has been secretly watching. Katrina resists the temptation until her father’s health worsens. He desperately needs a surgery the family cannot afford. Katrina decides she must go against her parents’ wishes to win the money needed to help her father. But how will she handle herself as an Amish teenager out in the world?

Teen girls will be swept into the excitement as Katrina ventures out of her quiet Amish world to become a reality television star. Will she be successful? And will she be accepted back into her community when it’s over?
