Younger Next Year for Women: Live Strong, Fit, and Sexy—Until You're 80 and Beyond

Younger Next Year for Women: Live Strong, Fit, and Sexy—Until You’re 80 and Beyond

Chris Crowley

This is a wonderful book whether you are an unhealthy couch potato, or already fit and healthy. My husband and I exercise regularly and eat ok, but this book really inspires a dedication to regular exercise. The information is backed up by simplified scientific theory and fact, written in a conversational, light-hearted style. It is easy and fun to read, and still really sends a clear message about what we all need to do to live a long, healthy satisfying life. I also appreciate the attention the authors pay to making meaning in life. It’s not just about diet and exercise.

Jen

Co-written by one of the country’s most prominent internists, Dr. Henry “Harry” Lodge, and his star patient, the 73-year-old Chris Crowley, Younger Next Year for Women is a book of hope, a guide to aging without fear or anxiety. This is a book of hope, a guide to aging without fear or anxiety. Using the same inspired structure of alternating voices, Chris and Harry have recast material specifically for women, who already live longer and take better care of themselves than men. New material covers menopause and post-menopause, as well as cardiac disease, osteoporosis, sexuality, and more.

This is the book that can show us how to turn back our biological clocks—how to put off 70% of the normal problems of aging (weakness, sore joints, bad balance) and eliminate 50% of serious illness and injury. The key to the program is found in Harry’s Rules: Exercise six days a week. Don’t eat crap. Connect and commit to others. There are seven rules all together, based on the latest findings in cell physiology, evolutionary biology, anthropology, and experimental psychology. Dr. Lodge explains how and why they work—and Chris Crowley, who is living proof of their effectiveness (skiing better today, for example, than he did twenty years ago), gives the just-as-essential motivation.

Both men and women can become functionally younger every year for the next five to ten years, then continue to live with newfound vitality and pleasure deep into our 80s and beyond.

Death by Living: Life Is Meant to Be Spent

Death by Living: Life Is Meant to Be Spent

N. D. Wilson

I had no idea how much I would enjoy reding this book . Would have liked this when I was younger. Much wisdom
In the book and the humor and truth is fantastic. I plan on giving this book to my friends.

Zetta Anderson

A poetic portrait of faith, futility, and the joy of this mortal life.

In this astoundingly unique book, bestselling author N.D. Wilson reminds each of us that to truly live we must recognize that we are dying. Every second we create more of our past—more decisions, more breathing, more love and more loathing, all of it slides by into the gone as we race to grab at more moments, at more memories made and already fading.

We are all authors, creators of our own pasts, of the books that will be our lives. We stare at the future or obsess about the present, but only the past has been set in stone, and we are the ones setting it. When we race across the wet concrete of time without purpose, without goals, without laughter and love and sacrifice, then we fail in our mortal moment. We race toward our inevitable ends without artistry and without beauty.

All of us must pause and breathe. See the past, see your life as the fruit of providence and thousands of personal narratives. What led to you? You did not choose where to set your feet in time. You choose where to set them next.
Then, we must see the future, not just to stare into the fog of distant years but to see the crystal choices as they race toward us in this sharp foreground we call the present. We stand in the now. God says create. Live. Choose. Shape the past. Etch your life in stone, and what you make will be forever.

Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus

Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus

Kyle Idleman

Couldn’t put it down and it made a great bible study topic and wonderful insights. Every Christian needs to read this.

Elizabeth Sweet

Pastor Kyle Idleman doesn’t just want to be a fan of Jesus, he wants to full heartedly commit to him and be a follower of Jesus. But how can you make the leap from fan to follower? In Not a Fan Idleman uses biblical examples to show how the people who met Jesus also had to decide if they were fans or followers, and what it meant for them to then become followers. Being a follower doesn’t mean that you go to church every week, that you slap a Jesus fish on the back of your car, and that you give to charity. That’s what a fan does. What a follower of Jesus does, Idleman observes, is die to themselves each and every moment of the day because ‘you can’t say yes to following Jesus unless you say no to living for yourself.’ In this three part book Idleman helps you to discover whether you are a fan or a follower, how to recognize the invitation Jesus has given, and what following Jesus looks like in your daily life. With humor and real life examples to draw you closer to Jesus, Kyle Idleman compels each and every one of us to Not Be A Fan

Rosetta, Rosetta, Sit By Me!

Rosetta, Rosetta, Sit By Me!

Linda Walvoord

“Rosetta, Rosetta Sit by Me!” is very effective in telling the story in Rosetta’s voice. Even the chapter titles are scrawled with the cursive of a young girl in primary school. It helps children see that bravery comes in many forms-even in the shape of a little girl that is judged unworthy to learn in her local public school.

Maura Ann Rubies

Frederick Douglass’s daughter tells her own story of segregation and triumph.

“Rosetta, Rosetta, Sit by me!” That’s what the white girls at Miss Tracy’s Female Seminary yell when Rosetta, Frederick Douglass’s nine-year-old daughter, shows up on the first day of school. But things don’t turn out the way she expects. Not only does she have to study in a classroom all by herself, but she’s also kept apart at recess. Told in Rosetta’s voice, and illustrated throughout, this remarkable chapter book includes a biographical endnote; a time line; reproductions of a letter from Rosetta to her father and Frederick Douglass’s newspaper, the North Star; and source notes.

Julia's Hope

Julia’s Hope

Leisha Kelly

I’ve never been an avid reader, but I decided to give it a try on this series from Leisha Kelly. Wow! These books are great and so hard to put down. Since I’ve completed all the books in this series (Julia’s Hope, Emma’s Gift, Katie’s Dream and Rorey’s Secret), I’ve been inspired to read many others.

MKLH

Like countless others in 1931, Samuel Wortham lost his job. And he lost his wife’s inheritance, their home, and much of his self-respect. Samuel, his wife, Julia, and their two young children hitchhike from Pennsylvania to Illinois in hope of work. Caught on the road by a sudden storm, the Worthams take shelter in an abandoned farmhouse out of desperation.

Feeling oddly at home, Julia insists on finding the owner of the property, despite Samuel’s objections, and asks for permission to stay. The owner is Emma Graham, a woman in her eighties who longs for home but can no longer live by herself. Emma and the Worthams work out a plan to live there together and restore the farm. Samuel struggles with not being able to provide for his family, and Julia and the kids confront unpleasant surprises when a busybody neighbor turns against them.

Julia’s Hope is an endearing story of faith and faithfulness as Emma teaches the Worthams to live fully, give generously, and love unconditionally. She insists that the family grow where they are planted, like the garden they tend, and each member of the family is forever changed by her wisdom.
