A Quest for More: Living for Something Bigger than You

A Quest for More: Living for Something Bigger than You

Paul David Tripp

This book is well laid out in bite size chapters. I have found it to be challenging to my comfortable, complacent christianity. That said, it is not another “get busy for christ” book. If it was, I would have thrown it in the trash. Instead, I would describe it as a book that invites you to know and love God and to be part of his larger purposes out of your love for Him. This is an amazingly inspirational book, you’ll be glad you took the time to read it.

Dara Jones

Paul David Tripp expertly traverses the deepest recesses of the human heart and compassionately invites fellow Christian travelers to journey with him into God’s bigger kingdom.

The author promises readers that they will be encouraged, excited, and motivated by hope as they learn how to set aside their “little kingdom” attachments which can expertly masquerade within the church as Christian activism, legalism, emotionalism, formalism, creedalism, and externalism; in favor of God’s expansive and soul-freeing eternal quest. Tripp demonstrates through sound biblical principles how humanity is made by God to transcend far beyond the mere physical realm and is likewise created to be “glory junkies;” those whose visionary lives are governed by God’s grand purposes rather than existing only within their narrow self-interested confines.

Writes the author, “It is a fundamental denial of your humanity to narrow the size of your life to the size of your own existence, because you were created to be an ‘above and more’ being. You were made to be transcendent.” Tripp then shows Christians how to “transcend” through daily, moment-by-moment, practical methodology that transforms individuals into the image of Christ. It is within this purpose-driven framework, this “Quest for More”, that Paul Tripp compels believers to see beyond the worldly deception of personal achievement, success, materialism, in order to break free from this ungodly fulfillment that is too easily satisfied with a mediocre walk with Christ. Instead the author invites committed sojourners to a life characterized by an unyielding passion that pursues God simply for the pleasure of his glorious company and in the process, affect eternal change in a hurting, hopeless world.

Prolific author and international conference speaker, Paul David Tripp, is president of Paul Tripp Ministries whose mission is to educate and equip today s Christian by combining in depth study of God s Word with practical life application. Tripp, also a pastor with over 15 years of pastoral ministry, is an adjunct professor at Westminster Theological Seminary and adjunct faculty member at the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation in Glenside, Pennsylvania. He is the author of such best-selling titles as, Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands; War of Words; Age of Opportunity; Lost in the Middle, How People Change and Relationships: A Mess Worth Making. Tripp has been married for 35 years and has four grown children.

The Sacred Search Couple's Conversation Guide

The Sacred Search Couple’s Conversation Guide

Gary Thomas

I first heard about this book on FamilyLife Today radio hosted by Dennis Rainey. This book provides practical advice to Christian singles everywhere on how to approach dating in both attitude and behavior. It reminds us that we ought to focus on the “why” instead of the “who”. This approach enables readers to re-evaluate their motives and priorities to help align their standards with that of the Word of God instead of pop culture and modern society. This is a must read!!!

Joannah YeYe

In this companion resource to The Sacred Search, Gary Thomas helps dating and engaged couples work through the critical issues and questions they must address before they decide to marry. The Sacred Search Couple’s Conversation Guide features 9 sessions of biblical study for couples, as well as a pastor/counselor’s premarital plan for walking a couple through the guide.

The Jesus Tree

The Jesus Tree

Carey Thomas

An excellent book for children and young adults about the true meaning of Christmas. It will inspire anyone who celebrates Christmas! I especially liked how the author taught the children that Christmas is more than getting presents.

Donna A Salinardi

Mackenzie and Ben are two typical kids caught up in the glimmer of the Christmas Season until they are asked to help an elderly woman decorate her “Jesus Tree.” While reluctant to help at first, their change of heart begins as the woman purposefully decorates her tree with docorations that remind her of Jesus. Each decoration tells the story of Jesus in a way that breathes new life into the meaning of Christmas. While admiring the humble tree, the old woman surprises Mackenzie and Ben with a Christmas gift they will never forget.

Cheerleader Abby and the Cheerleading Competition (Book 2 : The Adventures of Cheerleader Abby – Stories for Kids 4-8)

KP Baker

This is a beautiful book with great illustrations . I love the way there is a lesson in this book on how to help your friends if they are afraid of something. Abby is a delightful young girl whose passion is to help Tammy and give her confidence in being a cheerleader.
Well written book, and I look forward to Abby’s next book.

Rhodie Guy

Sometimes kids have a hard time performing in front of others. There could be a lot of anxiety for kids, whether they are shy or not, to get up in front of many people and do a performance. They could be worried about failing or simply too scared to even attempt it. This is what happened to Abby’s friend as their team practiced for the big cheerleading exhibition.

In “Cheerleader Abby and the Cheerleading Competition,” Abby and her cheerleading team are joining the conference exhibition. Abby is really excited about it, but one of her teammates is not. In fact, she is downright sad and scared about it. Abby’s teammate, Tammy, was afraid of performing in front of the large group that would be at the exhibition and she was afraid that she wouldn’t be able to do the dance well enough. In this book, Abby and Tammy explore together how much fun it can be to face their fears and try new experiences.
If you want to:

• Help your child learn that it is okay to be afraid, but that he or she should not let their fear stop them from doing things that they enjoy
• Teach your child the value of friendship and confiding their feelings to someone
• Show your child the pride and joy that they can feel from accomplishing something that they were afraid to try

Then “Cheerleader Abby and the Cheerleading Competition,” is the perfect book for you and your daughter. Abby’s journey with her friend Tammy will show your child that it is okay to be nervous about a new activity, but that she should never give up. As you read this book about cheerleading, you and your daughter can talk about the things that scares her or activities that she has avoided for fear of failing. Your daughter might even relate to Abby’s friend, Tammy in the story. Buy “Cheerleader Abby and the Cheerleading Competition” today and help your child overcome her fears and live life to the fullest!

Splintered Oak (Winsor Series)

T L Gray

Never before have I read a piece of fiction that is so vivid and honest. The characters could be my friends, I felt so in tune with their feelings. Their struggles are not uncommon, but are expressed in such a way that invites deeper understanding of the demons they face. Thank you, Ms. Gray, for not sugar coating reality, and for leaving your readers feeling encouraged and full of hope about a loving God.

The Sacred Search: What If It's Not about Who You Marry, But Why?

The Sacred Search: What If It’s Not about Who You Marry, But Why?

Gary Thomas

This is a great book. I highly recommend and I wish I had read this book years ago. So many of the teachings were things I’ve learned through hardship and I’d advise others to learn from a book instead! Great gift for any single person or even someone thinking about marrying! If you haven’t tied the knot, read this book. If you have, read his sacred marriage book- also great!

Bernese Lover “Brittany”

What if you stopped looking for a “soul mate” and started looking for a “sole mate”—someone who will live out with you the great purpose of God? What if dating isn’t about finding “the one” but making a wise choice so you can better serve the One who loves you most? What if God didn’t design relationships to make you happy but to make you holy?

In The Sacred Search, Gary Thomas will transform the way you look at romantic relationships. Whether you are single, dating, or engaged, Gary’s unique perspective on dating will prepare you for a satisfying, spiritually enriching marriage even before you walk down the aisle. As Gary reminds us, a good marriage is not something you find—it’s something you make.

Jesus on Every Page: 10 Simple Ways to Seek and Find Christ in the Old Testament

Jesus on Every Page: 10 Simple Ways to Seek and Find Christ in the Old Testament

David Murray

I found this not only informational but also inspirational! Wonderful insight that makes the Old Testament come alive. Thought provoking and a wealth of teaching material too.

Larry Floyd

Discover Jesus Throughout the Old Testament!

The son trudges uphill, bearing wood for his own sacrifice; his father has decided to give him up to death. What biblical event does this bring to mind? Is it Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22, or Christ’s passion in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? The kinship between these two stories is deeper than mere coincidence. Christ is present in the story of Abraham and Isaac. In fact, he is present on every page of the Old Testament.

Christians seem to have forgotten that the Old Testament has everything to do with Jesus Christ. In Jesus on Every Page, David Murray guides the reader down his own Road to Emmaus, describing how the Scriptures were opened to him, revealing Jesus from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. Dr. Murray’s ten simple ways to seek and find Christ in the Old Testament unveil the face of Christ in the creation, the law, the psalms, the prophets, and the proverbs.

Recognizing Jesus in the full breadth of Scripture is important for every Christian. Whether you are preaching Jesus through Old Testament readings or just beginning to discover the reality of Christ in the Old Testament, Jesus on Every Page provides an accessible guide to the increasingly popular subject of Jesus in the Old Testament books. Have your own Road to Emmaus experience and know the Old Testament for what it truly is: full of Jesus.

Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions

Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions

Lysa TerKeurst

This is the best and easiest to read book I’ve read in a good long time. I read it thinking of the young Moms in our congregation but found God’s Grace working through this grandma’s heart with every chapter. Lysa is refreshingly transparent and it disarms the reader paving the way for the Spirit to say “This is you, too and I am here to work in your heart.” Read it for yourself and pass it on to others.

Janet Harp

In this six-session, small group Bible study DVD, Lysa Terkeurst teaches participants how to process emotions and resolve conflicts in ways that lead to a much more peaceful life. Lysa TerKeurst admits that she, like most women, has experiences where others bump into her ‘happy’ causing her to come emotionally unglued. What do we often do with our raw emotions? We stuff, we explode, or react somewhere in between. Is it really possible to make emotions work for us instead of against us? Her answer is yes, and in her usual inspiring and practical way, Lysa shows you how. Filled with gut-honest personal examples and Biblical teaching, Unglued will equip you to know with confidence how to – Resolve conflict in your important relationships – Find peace in your most difficult relationships as you learn to be honest but kind when offended- Identify what type of reactor you are and how to significantly improve your communication- Respond with no regrets by managing your tendencies to stuff, explode or react somewhere in between- And how to gain a deep sense of calm by responding to situations out of your control without acting out of control This DVD is designed for use with the Unglued Participant Guide (sold separately). When used together, they provide you with a practical tool that can help strengthen your faith. Sessions include: 1. Grace for the Unglued2. Freedom for the Unglued3. Four Kinds of Unglued4. A Procedure Manual for the Unglued5. Lingering Words for the Unglued6. Imperfect Progress for the Unglued

Prayer

Prayer

Philip Yancey

This book is one of, if not the, best contemporary books on prayer, well suited to the ordinary Christian like me. While most other great books on prayer teach you the kinds, disciple and practice of prayer, “Prayer” by Philip Yancey talks about what prayer IS. As part one of the book states, prayer is essentially “keeping company with God”.

Avril Sol

In this six-session ZondervanGroupware video curriculum, award-winning author Philip Yancey probes the very heartbeat—the most fundamental, challenging, perplexing, and deeply rewarding aspect—of our relationship with God: prayer. What is prayer? How does it work? And more importantly, does it work? In theory, prayer is the essential human act, a priceless point of contact between us and the God of the universe. In practice, prayer is often frustrating, confusing, and fraught with mystery. Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? is an exploration of the mysterious intersection where God and humans meet and relate. Yancey explores such questions as: *Is God listening? *Why should God care about me? *If God knows everything, what’s the point of prayer? *Why do answers to prayer seem so inconsistent and capricious? *Why does God seem sometimes close and sometimes far away? *How can I make prayer more satisfying? The Prayer DVD and Prayer participant’s guide are available separately.

Fearless: Imagine Your Life Without Fear

Fearless: Imagine Your Life Without Fear

Max Lucado

I expected to enjoy reading Fearless. I’ve enjoyed reading every book Max Lucado wrote. But this book went far beyond my expectations. This is literally the best Max Lucado book I’ve ever read. I believe it has changed my life for the better.

Tamera Lynn Kraft

Each sunrise seems to bring fresh reasons for fear.

They’re talking layoffs at work, slowdowns in the economy, flare-ups in the Middle East, turnovers at headquarters, downturns in the housing market, upswings in global warming. The plague of our day, terrorism, begins with the word terror. Fear, it seems, has taken up a hundred-year lease on the building next door and set up shop. Oversized and rude, fear herds us into a prison of unlocked doors. Wouldn’t it be great to walk out?

Imagine your life, wholly untouched by angst. What if faith, not fear, was your default reaction to threats? If you could hover a fear magnet over your heart and extract every last shaving of dread, insecurity, or doubt, what would remain? Envision a day, just one day, where you could trust more and fear less.

Can you imagine your life without fear?

Running with Curves: Why You're Not Too Fat to Run, and the Skinny on How to Start Today

Running with Curves: Why You’re Not Too Fat to Run, and the Skinny on How to Start Today

Jill Angie

I loved Running with Curves by Jill Angie. I’m already a runner (because I run, see chapter 1) yet I still picked up some great running tricks such as tips on planning ahead so you never miss a run. I bookmarked many pages for future reference. Definitely worth $2.99. It also provides insight into the psychology of being overweight and self-esteem without sounding like a textbook. It is funny! I LOLed! Once I started reading, I could not put it down.

KL

Do you think running sucks? Do you think you’re too fat to run? Look no further, because this is the book of running tips for you. With humor, compassion, and lots of love, Jill Angie delivers the goods: overcoming the challenges of running with an overweight body and giving your self-esteem an enormous boost in the process.

This isn’t a guide to running for weight loss, or a simple running plan. This book is specifically about how a woman carrying a few (or many) extra pounds can successfully become a runner in the body she has right now.

Drawing on 15 years of experience as a curvy runner, Jill gives you everything you won’t find in the typical beginner’s running book, such as standing up to your inner mean girl, finding the right sports bra, and building up your self-confidence one step at a time. No matter what size you are, by the end of this book, even the most beginning runner will realize they are capable of much more than they ever thought possible.

Beth Moore

The realistic views and the heartfelt moments that the reader enters with this book are life changing and freeing. Anyone who has ever wanted a closer look at the life of Jesus and a deeper touch of His unconditional love should readh this book. I absolutely love and adore this book.

Tori lamkin

In Jesus, the One and Only, best-selling author and Bible teacher Beth Moore invites you to know Christ personally. Watch and listen as He breaks up a funeral by raising the dead, confronts conniving religious leaders of His day, teaches on a Galilean hillside, or walks on the waves and calms the storm.

Like a ragtag band of followers two thousand years ago, you will never be the same again after such an up close and personal encounter.

“He is Jesus, the One and Only, transcendent over all else,” writes Moore. “To know Him is to love Him. To love Him is to long for Him. To long for Him is to finally reach soul hands into the One true thing we need never get enough of . . . Jesus Christ. He’s all you need.”

The Scarlet Pimpernel (Illustrated)

Baroness Emmuska Orczy

I picked up this book when I was fourteen and have read it numerous times since. Orczy’s dramatic writing fully captures the drama and the tragedy of the French Revolution. This novel has something for everyone: political intrigue, adventure and romance. I particularly appreciate the development of her three main characters. They live lives that require superhuman intellect and courage. All of them find themselves searching for something: whether it be love, power or heroic fulfillment. Orczy has a true talent for writing.

A Matter of Trust (A Mia Quinn Mystery)

Lis Wiehl

Wow – this seems as if it is going to be a series I can really sink my teeth into. I am very surprised that with all of the books that this author has produced that I have not read anything by her yet. I am so glad I have now and I hope her past books live up to this one.

Safe in His Arms (Under Texas Stars)

Safe in His Arms (Under Texas Stars)

Colleen Coble

The book was much more suspenseful than I originally expected. Coble kept me guessing for much of the book about Daniel’s secrets. And even once I thought I had things figured out, she threw in a few extra surprises and twists. I absolutely loved every minute spent in Larson, Texas with Margaret and Daniel. It was fun to re-connect with characters from Blue Moon Promise as well, and I look forward to another visit (hopefully soon) when the next book in the series releases!!! [4.5 stars]

i blog 4 books

Sometimes it takes a stranger to see you as you really are.

Born and raised on sprawling Texas land, Margaret O’Brien prides herself on her competence as a rancher. But her father believes she’s made for more than just dawn-to-dusk work. He wants her to have the love of a good man, to raise children, to build a life. But Margaret gave up such dreams years ago. She’s convinced no man would have her, that the ranch is her life now.

So when Margaret’s father hires Daniel Cutler as a new foreman, she’s frustrated and suspicious. Then an overheard conversation links him with a gang of bank robbers, and she’s downright worried. Daniel swears he’s not involved, but Margaret’s not convinced. She knows the man still has secrets. But would a criminal be so kind and talk so convincingly of his faith? As a series of tragic “accidents” threatens all she holds dear, Margaret must decide what to trust: her own ears, her best judgment . . . or what her heart keeps telling her.

From the author of the best-selling Blue Moon Promise . . . an exciting tale of danger, romance, and faith played out under Texas stars.

A Bride for All Seasons: The Mail Order Bride Collection (Mail-Order Bride Collection)

Margaret Brownley (Author, Contributor), Robin Lee Hatcher (Contributor), Mary Connealy (Contributor), Debra Clopton (Contributor)

Do you like reading clean historical romance books? Do you enjoy mail-order bride stories? I do, so when I saw A Bride For All Seasons–The Mail-order Bride Collection, I just had to read it and was not at all disappointed. In fact, it is a collection of four novellas by four different authors: And Then Came Spring by Margaret Brownley, An Ever After Summer by Debra Clopton, Autumn’s Angel by Robin Lee Hatcher, and Winter Wedding Bells by Mary Connealy. I loved them all!

Karen Zemek

1800s mail-order bride catalogs facilitated many happy marriages. Here are the stories of four couples who owe their wedded bliss to creative editing by The Hitching Post publisher.

“And Then Came Spring”–Margaret Brownley
When mail order bride Mary-Jo Parker arrives in town she receives the shock of her life; not only is her fiancé dead, he left behind an eight-year-old son he neglected to mention. But the biggest challenge of all is the boy’s way-too-handsome uncle.

“An Ever-After Summer”–Debra Clopton

Widower Matt McConnell wrote his ad with no room for misunderstanding–Bible believers need not apply. But then Bible-thumping Ellie shows up on his doorstep. Matt’s so desperate for her help that he accepts.

“Autumn’s Angel”–Robin Lee Hatcher

Luvena Abbott’s privileged childhood didn’t prepare her for the hardship she now faces as an adult, especially when it comes to being the guardian of her nieces and nephew. Marriage seems the only answer to her dilemma. Clay Birch hopes to change the hurdy-gurdy house he won in a poker game into the finest opera house in the Northwest, but he’ll need help to do it. Could this unlikely couple actually be the perfect match?

“Winter Wedding Bells”–Mary Connealy

David Laramie is looking for a woman to care for his children. In exchange he’ll make her financially comfortable for life. But no woman wants to marry a dying man. Then Megan responds to his ad. It seems his “edited” letter contained no mention of him dying.

Terri Blackstock is a great mystery writer. Her stories are so suspenseful! I read this book in about a day as it was so hard to put down. It had lots of twists and turns to keep you wondering. Even when the villain was exposed, the action and suspense continued as the villain tried to get away with his evil deeds.

Working to solve the murder and clear her brother’s name, Cathy and her two sisters, Holly and Juliet, moonlight as part-time private investigators.
