Great book. Well researched and scholarly. Written in an easy to read style. Provides fresh insights into Austen’s characters as well as the life of women of her times.
Why is it so appropriate that the scene of Emma’s disgrace should be a picnic, and how do the different styles of housekeeping in Mansfield Park relate to the social issues of the day?
While Jane Austen does not luxuriate in cataloguing meals in the way of Victorian novelists, food in fact plays a vital part in her novels.
Her mainly domestic plots are deeply imbued with the rituals of giving and sharing meals. The attitudes of her characters to eating, to housekeeping and to hospitality are important indicators of their moral worth. This culminates in the artistic triumph of Emma, in which repeated references to food not only contribute to the portrait of her world, but provide an extended metaphor for the interdependence of a community.
In this original, lively and well-researched book, Maggie Lane not only offers a fresh perspective on the novels of Jane Austen, but illuminates a fascinating period of food history, as England stood on the brink of urbanisation, middle-class luxury, and a revolution in the role of women.
Ranging over topics from greed to gender to mealtimes and manners, and drawing on the novels, letters and Austen family papers, she also discusses Jane Austen’s own ambivalent attitude to the provision and enjoyment of food.
‘Jane Austen And Food’ is a brilliant and original study of one of England’s greatest novelists and will fascinate her many fans.
‘This book will enrich our interpretation of Jane Austen’s fiction, for Ms Lane makes us look afresh at the use of food as symbol and metaphor.’ Jane Austen Society Newsletter
Maggie Lane is the author of many books on Jane Austen including ‘Jane Austen’s Family’, ‘Jane Austen’s England’, ‘Jane Austen and Names’, ‘Understanding Austen’ and the forthcoming ‘Growing Older with Jane Austen’. She also lectures and writes for the journals of the Jane Austen Societies of the UK, US and Australia and is Consultant Editor of Regency World magazine.

30-Minute Paleo Dessert Recipes: Simple Gluten-Free and Paleo Desserts for Improved Weight-Loss
For me, I love desserts, but I don’t like to eat or bake desserts that contain sugar and other unhealthy ingredients. So when I discovered this superb and EASY TO USE cookbook, I was over the moon! Still am over the moon because these recipes call for common ingredients (that I have on hand) and are simple to prepare.
In less than 10 minutes after reading this, you could be eating the best Paleo banana bread ever! More importantly, though, you can nourish your body and feel good about eating these treats.
Sticking to a Paleo diet and giving up foods that you’ve eaten all your life is not easy. You can no longer just walk into a bakery or grocery store and buy desserts or cookies or pastries. There are no pre-packaged Paleo cake mixes. You want to stay Paleo and you want to get healthier, but you shouldn’t have to be in the kitchen for hours or else deprive yourself completely.
Don’t Give in!
Grocery stores and food companies aren’t looking out for you. They want to sell you the cheapest junk food that will taste good but make you feel terrible. I know. I’ve been there.
When I first went Paleo, I’d give in to temptation all the time. Every afternoon, I’d walk through Walgreens blindly hoping to find something gluten-free and Paleo to eat. After 20 minutes of useless searching, I’d usually end up buying some random treat that was completely non-Paleo!
I would tell myself that I would only eat one cookie, but while sitting in my office for the next couple hours, I wouldn’t stop until the entire packet was gone. It’s hardly surprising that I felt tired, grumpy, and bloated for days afterward. Giving in to temptation certainly didn’t help me lose weight, either. And worst of all, I’d end up wanting to eat even more junk!
You Have a Choice. Eat Better Desserts.
It’s taken me years to figure out how to escape that vicious cycle. I started by learning to make a variety of Paleo desserts and treats that were both delicious and made me feel better. It took me a long time, though, to figure out exactly which Paleo ingredients actually worked well as substitutes. I went through much experimentation (many desserts were outright failures – some even explodes!) and much taste-testing (always the fun part).
Most importantly, though, I perfected all of my recipes so that they’re super fast, use easy-to-find & common Paleo ingredients, are low in Paleo sugars, and still taste absolutely amazing! In fact, that’s what I have blogged about for years at AncestralChef.com, where you can find a ton of comments from happy Paleo dieters.
I’ve spent the time and effort over the years figuring everything out and perfecting these desserts, which is why I’m sure you’ll enjoy these 30-minute Paleo dessert recipes!
Convenience. Health. Yumminess. For Less.
Here’s the way I look at it. You’ll never again need to spend $3 on a brownie at the coffee shop, or $5 on a pack of cookies at the store. Instead, for instance, I’m going to show you how to make 12 amazing Paleo chocolate brownies in under 30 minutes, how to make a batch of Paleo butter cookies in less than 20 minutes, and other recipes in less than 5 minutes!.
Don’t worry if you don’t live in a big city or don’t live in the United States. I know finding Paleo ingredients can sometimes be tough, which is why I’ve done 2 things for you in this book. First, I use only the most common Paleo ingredients, and secondly, I’ve included an entire chapter on how to create your own ingredients. (I’ve also included links directly to ingredients I trust on Amazon, as well as possible substitutions if you’re unable to find the ingredient.) There’s even a metric conversion chart for those unused to the US system.
Get it Now.
Stop eating junk and start feeling great. Pick up a copy of 30-Minute Paleo Dessert Recipes today, and please let me know which recipe is your favorite!

Basic Crocheting: All the Skills and Tools You Need to Get Started (How To Basics)
I really loved this book. I’ve never been able to “get it” before, but with this book’s help, I am actually able to crochet! The instructions are excellent and don’t leave anything out. The photos are clear and the illustrations are helpful. If you’re new to crochet, this book will show you exactly how to do the patterns. It explains different types of yarn as well, so you don’t go out and buy the wrong thing. The projects are a nice variety; the apparel and accessories are fashionable and contemporary. Have fun trying it out!
A heavily illustrated introduction to the skills you need to become a crocheter, Basic Crocheting begins with the yarn, hooks, and other tools you need to get started, and then moves on to cover the skills you need to make a wide variety of home accessories and wearables. Detailed instructions for every step of each project are supplemented with helpful photographs and illustrations.

Inescapable (The Road to Kingdom #1)
I was hooked from the beginning! “Inescapable” is a suspense filled read. The author is a talented writer and keeps the suspense and twists coming throughout the book…but there is also a love story which is nice. It was a fun book to read! I look forward to more books in this series.

Lizzie Engel is used to running away. At eighteen, she left her Mennonite hometown, her family, and her faith with plans never to return. Five years later, Lizzie finds she’ll have to run again. As Lizzie becomes reacquainted with Kingdom, she realizes she may not have left her Mennonite roots and her faith as firmly in the past as she thought. She draws on the support of Noah Housler, an old friend, as she hides out and attempts to plan her next steps.
When it becomes painfully clear that the danger has followed Lizzie to Kingdom, suspicions and tensions run high, and she no longer knows who to trust. With her life and the lives of those she loves at risk, Lizzie will have to run one last time–to a Father whose love is inescapable.

The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name
I love every aspect of this Bible. The illustrations by Jago are both charming and intriguing. There are about fifty stories, a good balance. The text itself is exactly what I want my children to hear, theologically. I love this line from the very first chapter. “The Bible isn’t mainly about you and what you should be doing. It’s about God and what he has done.” AMEN.

The Boy on the Wooden Box: How the Impossible Became Possible . . . on Schindler’s List
A great book that lets the reader have a firsthand look at the deep heartache of a Jewish family in WWII. It is detailed enough to break your heart, but not so dark as to terrify my children. I would hand it over to my middle school aged kids and read along with them. The author ends with a great testimony to hope and healing.
Leon Leyson (born Leib Lezjon) was only ten years old when the Nazis invaded Poland and his family was forced to relocate to the Krakow ghetto. With incredible luck, perseverance, and grit, Leyson was able to survive the sadism of the Nazis, including that of the demonic Amon Goeth, commandant of Plaszow, the concentration camp outside Krakow. Ultimately, it was the generosity and cunning of one man, a man named Oskar Schindler, who saved Leon Leyson’s life, and the lives of his mother, his father, and two of his four siblings, by adding their names to his list of workers in his factory—a list that became world renowned: Schindler’s List.
This, the only memoir published by a former Schindler’s List child, perfectly captures the innocence of a small boy who goes through the unthinkable. Most notable is the lack of rancor, the lack of venom, and the abundance of dignity in Mr. Leyson’s telling. The Boy on the Wooden Box is a legacy of hope, a memoir unlike anything you’ve ever read.

Cider: Making, Using & Enjoying Sweet & Hard Cider, 3rd Edition
The authors do a good job of covering all of the essential bases on this topic … including apple cultivation, the selection of apple varietal blends for making various types of cider, an overview of the pressing and brewing process, an overview of common cider & sanitation problems, how to bottle, etc. I was also impressed by the reasonable level of competence demonstrated in their sections on sulfiting and pH/Acid balancing – topics that all too many amateurs (and more than a few novice pros) gloss over, or naievely (and maddeningly) avoid altogether.

One Call Away: Answering Life’s Challenges with Unshakable Faith
Before reading this book, I really had no idea who Brenda Warner was, yet this book grabbed me from the very first page. Brenda went from being a child who grew up poor to being married to a philandering husband, to being a single mom on food stamps and welfare, counting every penny, to being rich and married to a wonderful and godly man. Her journey was one that was I could so relate to, having gone through many hard times myself. I found it uplifting and encouraging to read of how she held onto her faith even in the darkest moments of her life.
Brenda Warner is best known as the outspoken wife of NFL superstar and Dancing with the Stars alum Kurt Warner. But years earlier, she found herself living through any woman’s nightmare: a healthy baby tragically injured in the bathtub; a sudden end to a career she loved; betrayal and divorce; poverty; public humiliation; a deadly natural disaster that destroyed her foundation and shook her to her core. One shattering phone call at a time, Brenda Warner’s life came to resemble little of her dream.
But each time her plans fell apart, Brenda faced a choice: to collapse in the face of tragedy or press forward and survive. She chose to keep going. In the process, she’s learned that the unexpected is only one call away. Her story provides hope and encouragement for anyone facing life’s challenges and shows us that our circumstances don’t tell us who we are, nor are they a measure of God’s love. God has a plan for us, even when our plans fail. Brenda’s life is proof that sometimes the best dreams are not the ones we dream, but the ones that come true when we least expect them.
“Brenda Warner remains a soldier fi ghting for faith and life in the face of unexplainable devastation. The fortitude of this ‘marine mom’ will grab your heart. If you think Kurt Warner’s journey is moving, do not wait to read the story of Brenda.”
—Elizabeth Hasselbeck, co-host of The View and special contributor for Good Morning America, ABC News
“We have all had the phone ring and our lives changed. Brenda Warner’s moving and inspiring memoir reminds us all of the power of family, the miracles and misfortunes of life, and the foundation that faith plays in our all-too-human existences. Unflinching and fearless, she is the woman I want in my corner: safe, smart, and savvy. A heroine for us all.”
—Jamie Lee Curtis, Author/actress/mother/sister

Are you yearning to raise children in the Lord? This book will offer great insights on how to experience God at hoe as it relates to your family. A must-read for all parents and for children ministers.
Here, his sons Tom and Richard Blackaby first establish the biblical case for the idea of experiencing God at home, illuminating how the clear foundation for God’s work in nations and churches around the world is his work in families.
Indeed, healthy families lead to healthy churches, and the Blackabys illustrate that through real-life stories of families that have found ways to experience God in marriage, in choosing life’s direction, in rescuing broken relationships, in forgiveness, in the salvation of loved ones, etc.
Lessons from the Bible support these moving accounts, and the book concludes with resources that will guide individuals families as well as entire churches toward practically experiencing God at home.

To Whisper Her Name (A Belle Meade Plantation Novel)
This was an excellent book, if I might say so myself. Author Tamera Alexander outdid herself once again with a story line that is very engaging and has plenty going on, which I love. It was easy to fall in love with the characters at Belle Meade Plantation.
“…Settled on the carriage seat, Olivia drew in a deep breath, the first in what felt like five years. She knew it was wrong, what she was feeling. Because a widow of only a week shouldn’t wish to dance a jig. But God help her, that’s precisely what she wanted to do. Not on the grave of her recently deceased husband, of course–that would be considered rude. Just off to the side would suffice.” [Excerpt from Chapter 1]
Olivia Aberdeen, destitute widow of a man shot as a traitor to the South, is shunned by proper society and gratefully accepts an invitation from “Aunt” Elizabeth Harding, mistress of Belle Meade Plantation. Expecting to be the Harding’s head housekeeper, Olivia is disillusioned when she learns the real reason Elizabeth’s husband, Confederate General William Giles Harding, agreed to her coming. Not finding the safe haven she expects, Olivia is caught off guard by her feelings for Ridley Adam Cooper, a Southern man who seems anything but a Southern gentleman.
Branded a traitor by some, Ridley Cooper, a Southern son who chose to fight for the Union, is a man desperate to end the war still raging inside him. Determined to learn “the gift” that Belle Meade’s head horse trainer and former slave, Bob Green, possesses, Ridley harbors secrets that threaten both their lives.
As Ridley seeks to make peace within himself for “betraying” the South he loved, Olivia is determined to never be betrayed again.
Set at Nashville’s historic Belle Meade Plantation, the most influential thoroughbred stud farm in America’s history, To Whisper Her Name weaves the struggles of real people of the post-war South with the journeys of a man and a woman scarred by betrayal.

Christmas at Holly Hill (Winds Across the Prairie)
Christmas at Holly Hill is your typical happy ending novel, but equally engaging. The main characters are likeable, although Merry’s life at Holly Hill does seem a bit implausibly too good to be true and a prairie house-fire does seem to have its tragedy glossed over. The story is riveting, even mid-story my pulse was quickening through as the events unfolded. A few minor editing errors through me off early on, thus the four stars.
It is October 1898, and Clayton Barlow has just returned home after serving time in prison for his part in a bank robbery. His family welcomes him, but the townspeople are skeptical. Bored with life in the small town but determined to make a new start, he goes to work with his father, hoping to regain the town’s trust.
Clayton recognizes the schoolteacher at the Prairie Grove School as his childhood friend, Merry Lee Warner, and old feelings surface. Still, he doubts that he could ever get a woman like Merry to love him.
As the townspeople prepare for Christmas, their suspicions about Clayton lead to trouble. Will the trusting heart of an unlikely new friend be enough to restore Clayton’s relationships with his neighbors and reunite him with God and Merry?

The Heiress of Winterwood (Whispers On The Moors)
The Heiress of Winterwood was a very good read! The story completely blew me away! I believe this is Sarah E. Ladd’s debut novel, but I wouldn’t have been able to tell that by reading the book.
Amelia Barrett gave her word. Keeping it could cost her everything.
Amelia Barrett, heiress to an estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend’s baby. She’ll risk everything to keep her word—even to the point of proposing to the child’s father—a sea captain she’s never met.
When the child vanishes with little more than an ominous ransom note hinting at her whereabouts, Amelia and Graham are driven to test the boundaries of their love for this little one.
Amelia’s detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she’s forced to examine her soul and face her one weakness: pride.
Graham’s strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline. And away from the family he has sworn to love and protect.
Both must learn to have faith and relinquish control so they can embrace the future ahead of them.
“My kind of book! [It] grabbed my attention from the first lines and I eagerly returned to its pages.” —Julie Klassen, Best-Selling, Award-Winning Author

Ready or Not (Aggie’s Inheritance)
Because you will not want to put it down! Ready or Not is a beautiful and hilarious story of sacrifice. From the beginning, the characters will become like old friends. Chautona Havig does an amazing job of drawing you in to Aggie’s story. Be warned…you will want the next two books in this series For Keeps and Here We Come.
After the abrupt loss of her sister and brother-in-law, Aggie is stunned to find herself the sole guardian of their eight lively children. If learning basic parenting skills wasn’t complicated enough, she must also battle the children’s half-crazed grandmother, survive a massive remodeling project, and navigate the waters of new friendships-alone.
She has little experience with children and none with housekeeping, and it shows. What she has going for her is grit, a double dose of determination, and the confidence that this is exactly where the Lord wants her to be. With an unlimited P-mail account and enough hymns to keep her spirits bolstered, she tackles one catastrophe after another.
It seems like nothing Aggie does is right, but ready or not, here she comes!
