Several years ago my wife and I lost our unborn baby, who was almost at his due date, for no explainable medical reason. I share my story about how we managed to work through the pain and how we overcame this incredibly difficult life experience. I hope that by doing so I may be able to help someone who is struggling with a similar loss.
If you or someone you care about has experienced a stillbirth, my prayers are with you and your family during this tragic time. It never occurred to me to write a book about the loss of my second child until one of my coworkers experienced the same grief and loss in his family. After closing the office door, I talked with him about the sadness and recovery my wife, Mai, and I went through. I told him about how after our second child died we were able to have a happy life again and how we were able to go on and have a healthy baby. Our discussion and my suggestions for ways he could help his family left me walking away with very mixed feelings. Reliving the pain of losing a child was difficult, but the warm feeling of having helped another family was tremendous, and I knew there was a true purpose in that.
After thinking about it, it seemed to make sense that more people were hurting than I could possibly help in person. Sharing my story in this format is the most practical way to provide comfort to those in mourning. If this book helps provide any relief to you, or provides any help as you look for the answers to the hard questions for which there are no good answers right now, then I’ve achieved my goal in writing our story.
Mai has shared her feelings as honestly as possible to help you see both sides of our story. As time has passed, we’ve had flashbacks and time for recollection. The purpose of her words is to provide a wider perspective and to let you know how both of us felt at that time while trying to figure it out. Your wife may have a hard time expressing how she feels. She may be so overwhelmed that she doesn’t even know all the feelings she’s experiencing.
