A Place of Healing: Wrestling with the Mysteries of Suffering, Pain, and God’s Sovereignty
Price: FREE
Although Joni has written about suffering in previous books such as A Step Further and When God Weeps, she wrote this book to revisit the topic after experiencing two years of unrelenting chronic pain that still continues. Almost 60 years old, and a quadriplegic for 43 of them, this book chronicles a new chapter in her life. It is the fruit of Christian maturity as well as careful biblical reflection and takes a very practical, God-glorifying approach. The title, A Place of Healing, refers not only to “our wonderfully sovereign God” as our place of healing (page 12), but also to her wheelchair (page 52) as her place of inner growth and healing where God can be glorified the most.
One is introduced to suffering as an aspect of spiritual warfare in chapter 1. Chapter 2 addresses the real question regarding God and healing which is not whether God can heal but whether or not he will heal all those who truly come to him in faith. In chapter 3 one is introduced to Canadian missionary statesman Henry Frost who wrote the book Miraculous Healing, first published in 1931, which Joni considers the most sensible and balanced treatment on the subject of divine healing. She expounds on four key points on healing found in this book, adding her own insights. Chapter 4 provides five benefits to suffering, chapter 5 gives four answers to the question of “How can I go on like this?”, and chapter 6 lays out eight ideas on how we bring Christ glory in a time of trial or limitation. Chapter 7 suggests several ways to gain a fresh, hopeful perspective, and chapter 8 meditatively reflects on heaven as a place of ultimate healing. Chapter 9 introduces us to some wonderful people her ministry came into contact with who spiritually overcame their “disabilities”.

One of the best parenting books I have read in a while. I recommend it to any mom who feels like they need some inspiration.
The perfect pick me up for overwhelmed and stressed mums.
Do you find yourself exhausted? Are you sometimes so tired you can’t even look at a problem, let alone do anything about it? Do you take your frustration out on the kids and end up shouting at them? Are you terrified of disappearing into the grey banality of suburban motherhood?
This book is simple, practical and easy to fit into your life. It will turn your life around. After you finish it, you’ll have more contentment, more time, more energy, more space, more money and most importantly more sparkle.
Even better, you can do all this without changing your children, partner, life, house or financial situation.
This fabulous little book has a whole pile of punch, and will help you to beat the greyness, overwhelm, frazzle, stress, exhaustion, suffocation, and worry of a mum’s life.
This book can revolutionise your life within six days – or six weeks, or six months: it’s a life makeover.
The Mummy Whisperer doesn’t add to the already heavy load of a mum; she reduces the load, changing your life, and letting you maintain the new you with just a few seconds a day.
The Mummy Whisperer won’t tell you how to be a mum. She won’t tell you what you should do. She will help you to become calmer and more contented. You will be able to de-clutter all the noise and stress around you. You will be able to hear yourself and be you again.
You are magnificent; you just don’t know it.
This book won’t make you into a perfect mum or a super mum, it will make you into the mum you are meant to be, which is just what your family has always wanted.

I love to bake and I am always looking to add a worthy cookbook to my collection. This time of year is all about pies for me: from fruit to cream to custard. I am loving the ones in this new book. I have never done much with mini-pies because, in my opinion it looked like 12x the amount of work as one full-size pie, but the author of this book carefully breaks down the steps of prep, assembly, baking, and clean-up which allowed me to try my first mini-pie (blueberry mini-pie) and it was wonderfully delicious! I highly recommend this cookbook.
Join the mini pie explosion! Bite size mini pies are all the rage. The teeny tiny pies are so easy to eat and portion control is built in. These little baked goods are cute displayed in cupcake racks or put together into a shape like a Christmas tree for holiday parties. They make perfect party hors-d’oeuvres since they are finger food. And they are fun to make and can be made in advance of your get together.
Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginning baker, you’ll find recipes your family will be asking for again and again. You’ll also learn how to create mini pies from your standard pie recipes. Mini pies are a great way to serve a crowd and are perfect gifts for the holidays.

My wife and I are very conscious of what we eat. We don’t care for simply plain water, though we wish we were, but we also don’t like subjecting ourselves to the chemical concoctions that make up sodas. This book offers up a large number of drinks beyond simply juice and Gatorade that we’ve felt destined to consume. If you want to spice up your fridge with delectable drinks, this book is worth checking out, even if some of the drinks aren’t strictly low calorie.
The low-calorie offerings include the Spiced Tea (0 calories), the Lite Orange Shake (38 calories), Lite Orange Imitation Sangria (40 calories), Cold Strawberry Refresher (40 calories), the Cold Raspberry Refresher (76 calories) and the Lite Imitation Cappucino (12 calories). You’ll also save on calories compared to the regular versions with the Thick Chocolate Almost-Malt (222 calories compared to 624 in a regular malt), the Lite Milk Shake (137 calories compared to 425 for a regular milk shake), and the Lite Orange Imitation Sangria (40 calories compared to 150 for a regular sangria). So, you can continue to enjoy your favorite beverages and save calories as well!
A note on carbs: there are only 3 recipes that actually use sugar. (Others which list a sweetener call for no-calorie sugar substitutes.) Recipes with higher carbs generally indicate that the recipe has fruit, yogurt, or milk (all GOOD carbs), or alcohol. Even so, the vast majority of recipes have carb values that are 0 to 30 g.

Fix, Freeze, Feast: The Delicious, Money-Saving Way to Feed Your Family
Price: $2.99
I just got this book a few weeks ago, and I LOVE it! I live in a household of two, and am not a Costco-type shopper when it comes to meats, so everything I have made from this book, I have just halved the recipes to fit my smaller-packages-of-meat shopping patterns. No biggie. I still have three plus meals out of each type of meat I buy for the two of us.
My husband absolutely raved about the Sticky Ribs recipe…and being a die-hard foodie, he is VERY difficult to impress. He has insisted I make them again for a potluck this weekend. I won’t give the recipe away, but trust me, for just four ingredients, this one can’t be beat. It was worth the price of the book for this one recipe alone.
Overall, this book was a great intro for me on the pleasures of make-ahead cooking. I think I am addicted now! And the fact the recipes in this book do not contain any horrible ingredients like Velveeta cheese, canned “cream of” soups, or refrigerated biscuit dough is great, too! You can feed your family easily, healthfully, and with fewer preservatives and if you purchase this book and make some of the recipes as they are written. I highly recommend it!
Millions of shoppers save money by buying groceries in bulk – trays of boneless chicken breasts, pairs of flank steaks, flats of ripe tomatoes. But savings can quickly turn to losses if those bulk quantities spoil in the refrigerator or lie forgotten – unlabeled and unrecognizable under lays of ice crystals – in the back of the freezer.
In the new paperback edition of Fix, Freeze, Feast, authors Kati Neville and Lindsay Tkacsik offer a complete system for taking full advantage of bulk purchasing and advance preparation to ensure no food is ever wasted. They show how easy it is to get organized, prepare ahead, and be ready to put healthful, satisfying meals on the dinner table (or breakfast table, or even brunch table!) at a moment’s notice. Theirs is a cookbook price-conscious shoppers will love and warehouse club members shouldn’t be without.
Cooks will find 125 delicious, healthful recipes to choose from Each one includes directions for dividing, preparing, and storing raw ingredients; a second set of simple direction is included for thawing, cooking, and enjoying the food. Designed for the way people cook today, Fix, Freeze, Feast meals are lighter and fresher than traditional bulk-cooking recipes, with a focus on simple stews and stir-fries, quick grilled or broiled main courses, and popular ethnic meals such as Beef Fajitas and Cashew Chicken Stir-Fry. Fix, Freeze, Feast, also includes ready-to-bake cookie doughs, soups, side dishes, smoothies, and snacks. With these innovative techniques and recipes, dinner is always in the freezer!

Draw the Circle: The 40 Day Prayer Challenge
Price: $2.99
The author (Mark Batterson) explains the importance of having faith when we pray. Meaning if we are going to pray to God asking for a miracle, shouldn’t we have faith that God will do it? We shouldn’t be doubtful of God’s ability to answer our prayers just because He may not answer them the way we expected. Batterson even suggests “drawing a circle” around the things we are praying for. For example, Batterson is a church planter and when his church was trying to figure out where God wanted them to plant their next church, Batterson took a prayer walk around the perimeter of the area they were looking at. He prayed through a 4 mile circle, asking God to show Him where to plant their church. And God provided an answer to Him.

The Berry Bible: With 175 Recipes Using Cultivated and Wild, Fresh and Frozen Berries
Price: 99 cents
This beautiful book has everything going for it and tells you everything you ever wanted or needed to know about berries. Ms. Hibler discusses in great detail 35 or 40 berries– many of which I was not familiar with– along with color photographs of twice that many. About each berry she discusses their common names, scientific classification, habitat, history, where they are grown commercially, how to pick them, how to buy them, how to store them, along with notes for the cook. On cranberries she tells the cook: “Think of them as the lemons of the berry world. Their tartness acts as a flavor enhancer when they are mixed with other fruits or berries, bringing out the best in both.” On blueberries: “They are good mixed with other fruits and nuts, especially almonds.”
In the author’s introduction she discusses the current problems consumers face in the market. Although berries are now available the year round, we have sacrificed quality for quantity. (Do you ever wonder how growers get those tasteless strawberries bigger than a baby’s fist?) She points out that many berries are picked while green and will never taste right when they do ripen. She further states that if we are willing to pay more for good berries for a shorter length of time in the market, that the sellers will do what is necessary to sell berries. But it is left up to the consumer to alleviate the problem.
Part encyclopedia, part cookbook, The Berry Bible begins with an explanation of the health benefits of nutrient-rich berries and goes on to profile dozens of important culinary berries and berrylike fruits in the vibrantly illustrated “A-to-Z Berry Encyclopedia.” Tips on how to remove berry stains and freeze for the off-season pave the way for 175 delectable recipes that use cultivated, wild, fresh, and frozen berries.
From Blackberry-Blueberry Cardamom Muffins, Mango-Raspberry Summer Soup, and Boysenberry Applesauce to Blackberry-Port Lamb Shanks, Almond-Gooseberry Cream Pie, and The Perfect Strawberry Shortcake, these succulent dishes are sure to garner The Berry Bible a permanent spot in any kitchen.
