Donuts

Price: FREE

There is no doubt, this is my favorite kid’s book of the year. How can you not love this book? These are the best illustrations I have ever seen for Kindle. You actually forget you aren’t holding a “real book” when you read this. The story is adorable and has a good message as well. My kids loved this so much that we are on our fifth reading already and I expect this has now become their overall favorite. I certainly recommend this book to anyone with children…maybe even if you don’t have children, it is just so sweet!

Donuts is a fairy tale with a modern day appeal. Meet Merl, a plucky, young squirrel who makes his home in a vast wilderness where all the trees have been cut to the ground. When Merl finds the very last acorn, he makes an extraordinary wish, resulting in one final oak tree sprouting. However, Merl’s wish is far from granted when the tree’s sprawling branches fail to bloom one single nut. A visit to a park turns Merl’s world upside down and his tree will never be the same. This is a majestic and poignant tale that exemplifies the beauty of loyalty in the friendship that grows between a squirrel and his tree. Donuts will touch the hearts of readers and make the most ardent cynic, smile. Stunning illustrations and melodic rhyming text make this enchanting adventure a memorable read.

Learn to Read with Sami and Thomas: Book 1

Rebecca and James McDonald

Price: FREE

This is a great book for children who are starting to read. The illustrations are very well done and inviting and I love how the authors use both beginning and ending sounds with the letters, and how they use both capital and lower case letters. Many beginning readers focus only on the first letter/sound of words. I think that this book could also be used for ESL learners as well. All in all, a very worthwhile book to have; either in print or on your Kindle.

A book with a positive message about bullying written for kids (and adults too) by a kid!

Emily is the new girl at school. She learns quickly that her first day at a new school isn’t going to go the way she expected. She gets teased about her appearance among other things. At first, Emily thinks that there is something wrong with her, and wonders if there is something she can fix about herself to get the other kids to stop teasing. She soon learns that the problem isn’t her, it’s them. Together with some new friends that she initially overlooks due to her worries, they bring about change at their school with confidence, communication and teamwork.

This book is written by Jessica Arnold, the author of “I am Good at Lots of Things” and “Hello My Name is Rose and this is My Christmas Story”
