Raymond C. Schmidt

Price: FREE

This is a book about real life, real struggle and real love. Not just the love of a cute little blonde, but a love of a land and a country. It shows the reader just how it was during the depression and how not to take everything for granted. It should be required reading in high school to let todays generation learn that life is not free, you have to work hard hard and do things that you don’t want to do to try to make your dreams come true. And sometimes things turn out not quite the way you planned but for the better–or worse.
It was a quick read that I could not put down filled with memories that will make you laugh out loud and cry real tears.

How about dig your own well or cut ice out of a river to cool your food? Kill, skin, dry, and can animals to feed your family? You never know. Almond Flour Recipes: Delicious Low-Carb, Gluten-Free Recipes For The Whole Family

Ready Recipe Books

Price: FREE

The author has done a wonderful job in explaining the nutritional value and health benefits of Almond at the beginning of the book. Also included is the differences between almond flour vs wheat flour and how almond flour is beneficial to ones health. The recipes are low carb, gluten free recipes which are simple and diverse. The only problems I found was that there were a couple of typos (fried shrimp recipe – I think should have been 1 lbs raw shrimp not 1 tsp) and in the cinnamon pumpkin bread, in the preparation section coil should be oil) but I can see past these and highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to eliminate grain from their diet and looking at the gluten free lifestyle. Recommended for the whole family and I simply cant wait to give these recipes a try. In fact most of the recipes look amazing and will definitely work my way thru the recipes listed.

7 Simple Choices for a Better Tomorrow

Bob Merritt

Price: FREE

I have a bookshelf at home where I keep my favorite “Christian living” books. Some are classics by CS Lewis and John Bunyon. Some are more intellectual (Tim Keller’s Reason for God). Others are more practical in nature (Humility by CJ Mahaney or John Ortberg’s “It all goes back in the box”). A copy of Bob Merritt’s new book, “When Life’s not working” now sits on that shelf as well.
I don’t normally write reviews, but this was one of those books where you finish it and think, “Man I wish I would’ve read that book 10 years ago.” It’s chalk full of practical wisdom that helps you live life well. I found myself journaling about and longing to really apply much of what I read. I’ve read books on living a disciplined life before (which is the main idea of the book), but Merritt did a great job of showing you how to get there with the seven principles he outlines. Although not specifically written for young people, if I had a teenager or young adult, this would be required reading. It’s that good.
What sets this book apart from a Henry Cloud’s “Integrity” (also very good) is that it’s so easy to read. Merritt is a master storyteller, and there’s humor on every page. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had reading a “Christian Living” book. Merritt is also ultra vulnerable in such a real an authentic way, that there were times when I found myself choking up- not sure if it’s ok for a guy to admit that in a review, ha. ‘ Finally, this book isn’t just for those who find themselves struggling in life. My life seems to be working pretty well and I got a lot out of this book. I’d highly recommend it.

Life is hard–for everyone. No matter how gifted or fortunate, everyone will experience some level of disappointment in life: difficult classes, jobs, relationships, and losses. But by following basic disciplines anyone can experience accomplishment, freedom, and ease in navigating through life’s daily challenges.

In this positive, insightful book, Bob Merritt describes a set of universal principles that work for everyone in every stage of life, showing that what we do today determines who we become tomorrow. Anyone who has experienced pain or confusion from lost opportunities, broken relationships, or a nagging sense of emptiness will treasure this book that shows them that the best of life has not passed them by.

The Millionaire Next Door

Thomas J. Stanley Ph.D.

Price: $1.99

I used to be one of those people who spent all or at least most of my money and thought I was doing okay with the little savings I had in the bank earning 2% (wow).I always bought brand new cars, new clothes, went on vacations 6-8 times per year and partied. I had a great time! One day my company shut down and I was forced to live on 50% OF MY INCOME. My savings dwindled to nothing and I had a hard time making car and credit card payments. I came to the realization that I was “renting” my “lifestyle” all of which was encumbered with debts and false belief in “job security” A friend loaned me a copy of “The Millionaire Next Door” and I had to painfully admit that I had been a fool. I met a really nice old couple in their ’70’s who never made much over minimum wage in salary, but were debt free and had 100’s of thousands to retire on and were living better than the flamboyant fools like me who spent through their incomes. This book turned me around. I would also recommend “9 Steps to Financial Freedom” and ‘More Wealth without Risk” to add to your library, or at least borrow from a library. I am now living better, earning 20-25% in mutuals, contribute to my new companies 401 (k), have a IRA and am DEBT FREE with the exception of my mortgage which will be paid off in five years (or less).

A Customer

Most of the truly wealthy in the United States don’t live in Beverly Hills or on Park Avenue. They live next door.

America’s wealthy seldom get that way through an inheritance or an advanced degree. They bargain-shop for used cars, raise children who don’t realize how rich their families are, and reject a lifestyle of flashy exhibitionism and competitive spending. In fact, the glamorous people many of us think of as “rich” are actually a tiny minority of America’s truly wealthy citizens—and behave quite differently than the majority.

At the time of its first publication in 1996, The Millionaire Next Door was a groundbreaking examination of America’s rich—exposing for the first time the seven common qualities that appear over and over among this exclusive demographic. This new edition, the first since 1998, includes a new foreword by Dr. Thomas J. Stanley—updating the original content in the context of the 21st century.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Formerly a professor of marketing at Georgia State University, Dr. Stanley spent approximately 20 years interviewing America’s wealthy, starting in 1973—and focusing on people with a net worth of at least $1 million.

His first book, Marketing to the Affluent, was chosen as a Top 10 Outstanding Business Book by the editors of Best of Business Quarterly. He achieved popular acclaim with The Millionaire Next Door—selling over 2 million copies. In total, Dr. Stanley’s books have spent over 170 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Dr. Stanley holds a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Georgia in Athens. He currently lives in Atlanta.

Not a Fan: Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus

Kyle Idleman

Price: $2.99

If you are looking for a book that preaches a comfortable, easy, complacent version of Christianity, then this isn’t the book for you. This book will hit you between the eyes. Kyle Idleman pulls no punches. If you are open to it, this book is like a giant mirror. It will help you take an honest look at yourself and realize what is truly in your heart. Jesus was never interested in drawing a crowd. He was interesting in gaining followers. Not of religion or legalism, but followers of Him. Idleman goes to great lengths to help the reader understand what it means to truly follow Christ. We live in an age where the Gospel and cost of following Christ are often softened and watered down. I think there are many people in American churches who have chosen to “follow Christ” with little or no consideration of the cost. Following Christ is about much more than just a “Get Out of Hell Free” card. It involves sacrifice, dying to self, and surrendering everything to Him. He may not ask us to give up everything, but a true follower is willing to do so if He does ask.
I think we all know someone who is obsessed with a particular celebrity. For example, say someone is obsessed with Britney Spears. A true fan probably is a fan on Facebook, has every CD she has ever made, and possibly even a scrape book of every magazine article ever written about her. If something new comes out, they will go to great lengths to attain it. But Jesus has never been interesting in having a fan club. He wants all of us. If you read this book with an open heart and mind, and are willing to be honest with yourself, this book will help you know if you are really a follower of Christ or if you are merely a fan of His. It is one thing to CLAIM to be a follower, it is an altogether different thing to actually LIVE like a follower of Christ. Jesus is not interested in mere lip service.
I have to ademit, that I spent a lot of years as a fan of Jesus. I knew all the right lingo, all the rules (don’t drink, don’t swear, don’t have sex before marriage) and I knew a lot of knowledge about Jesus and the Bible. But what I didn’t realize is that Jesus is interested in the heart. It is entirely possible to look great on the outside and be rotten on the inside. After awhile, I started going through the motions of prayer, worshiping God, and reading in the Word, but my heart wasn’t really in it. I cared more about looking good on the outside than the state of my heart. I claimed to love Jesus, but in reality, it was all about me. I realized I wasn’t following the Jesus of Scripture, I was following a false version of my own creation. A version that didn’t demand too much, expect too much out of me, or expect total, unconditional surrender. I honestly believed that I could have Christ and my own way. Looking back, I can see now how completely self-centered I was. Even when a close friend cared enough to point this out to me, I didn’t listen. Instead, I got angry and defensive. I claimed that Jesus was Lord of my life, but when it came right down to it, I was Lord of my life. But no more. Now, I can honestly say “I am not a fan of Jesus.”

LMS

Pastor Kyle Idleman doesn’t just want to be a fan of Jesus, he wants to full heartedly commit to him and be a follower of Jesus. But how can you make the leap from fan to follower? In Not a Fan Idleman uses biblical examples to show how the people who met Jesus also had to decide if they were fans or followers, and what it meant for them to then become followers. Being a follower doesn’t mean that you go to church every week, that you slap a Jesus fish on the back of your car, and that you give to charity. That’s what a fan does. What a follower of Jesus does, Idleman observes, is die to themselves each and every moment of the day because ‘you can’t say yes to following Jesus unless you say no to living for yourself.’ In this three part book Idleman helps you to discover whether you are a fan or a follower, how to recognize the invitation Jesus has given, and what following Jesus looks like in your daily life. With humor and real life examples to draw you closer to Jesus, Kyle Idleman compels each and every one of us to Not Be A Fan
