Welcome to ERG’s weekly Author of the Week Interview! This will be a weekly feature, and I’ll be interviewing popular authors in different genres. If you have a favorite author that you’d like to see featured, make sure to tell them to contact me.

So let’s get started. I’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Avant. She is the author of the book FaithLeaps: The Christian Mom’s Guide to Passion, Purpose, and Profits. I know that a lot of you ladies are interested in making money while you stay at home with your children, so this is the perfect book for you! Let’s get to know Alyssa!

Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

I had just had my 2nd child. I was a stay at home mom to a 4 year old and a newborn when I discovered I was pregnant with my third child. A little over nine months later I found myself home with a preschooler, a toddler and a newborn.

Amidst the diapers, bottles and sippy cups I built a business. I often typed with one hand and held a baby with the other. Other times I’d sit in the recliner with a baby and a toddler balancing a laptop on my lap.

I’d get frustrated trying to fill sippy cups and make bottles, but at least babies and toddlers take naps and that one to two hours a day I could focus and get even more work done.

I had a burning desire to do more. I also wanted to help provide for my family. In today’s world it takes a two income household, and my biggest worry was “I don’t want to put my babies in daycare.”

Keep reading to find out how I got here, where I’m going, and where I can take YOU.

As I juggled babies and  my laptop I went online to find a way to make a business become a reality, and a profitable one.  There were a ton of scams to sift through. I joined some mom communities and was blessed to have them reach out to me and realize my talents and abilities and encourage me in those.

Just like countless other women, I wanted something to do for me, something that connected me to others. So many women, when they stay home with babies all day,  long for a connection to the outside world.

I was a full time ghostwriter for a little over two years, all the while  learning the other aspects of business.  I spent every spare moment I had consuming information on WordPress, social media, marketing and product creation.  I built my own WordPress website(s), was one of the first on Twitter and created ebooks that still sell today.

I am driven to help others. I know there are other moms who have felt or feel just like I have in the early days of building a profitable business a mist the craziness of kids and on a budget. I desire to share my knowledge with YOU and help YOU to not make the mistakes I did.

When and why did you decide to write your first book?

I actually wrote FaithLeaps beginning in 2009, but it took me almost 4 years to publish it.  I wrote it to help all the other moms who were like me and were on the edge of taking a leap of faith.

Tell us about your blog/website.

I have several sites, but my main site is where I have two main focuses.  One is to help Christian moms build a successful virtual assistant business.  The second focus is to provide online support and services to authors, speakers and coaches.

What makes FaithLeaps different from other WAHM books?

FaithLeaps is set apart by its uniquely Christian and biblical viewpoints.  The book is laced with Scripture that point out not only what you should do to become a work at home mom, but also how it relates to you spiritually.  We cannot compartmentalize our lives and this books brings it all together.

Are you planning on writing any other books in the near future?

Yes, I hope to write another book.  I want FaithLeaps to be a series of books.

Who is your favorite author and book?

My favorite author is John Ortberg and his book, which I quote in FaithLeaps is If You Want to Walk On Water You’ve Got to Get out of the Boat.

What book are you reading right now?

I am currently reading Renewed: Finding Your Inner Happy in an Overwhelmed World, by my client, and author Lucille Zimmerman.

How did you decide on the subject for your book?

I wanted to share my story and journey with others and provide them with a how to guide for working from home.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Ha! Spare time that’s funny!  I’ve always got a project. I don’t like down time, so I’m either creating training for moms who want to work from home, or I am servicing my clients.  Either way, I’m rarely not busy.  I love it that way.

Thanks so much Alyssa for being this week’s Author of the Week! Make sure to go check out FaithLeaps! It’s on sale for only 99 cents for a limited time!
