“The Carpenter” started me on an adventure wanting to read anything DL Maynard has written. She made this bible story come to life. While writing historical fiction, she brings an understanding of customs from first century Palestine and gives me a hunger for more. For me I felt like, for just a second, I was there.
Hiding his belief that God is no more than the product of wishful thinking, Yosef manages to pass himself off as a respectable member of his community until he discovers that his bride-to-be, Maryam, is pregnant. His first instinct is to divorce her, but he changes his mind after a disturbing dream shakes the foundation of his life and convinces him to claim Maryam’s child as his own. A sinful man, Yosef is an unlikely choice for the most important parenting job in history; nevertheless, he rises to the challenge out of his love for Maryam and her child.
Yosef’s decision ultimately leads him on a journey across first-century Palestine—and beyond his unbelief—as he fights to protect his son from a world that seems determined to destroy him.
The Carpenter is the first “autobio-novel” in the Immanu’El series, historical fiction centered around the lives of people who walked with Jesus in 1st-century Palestine.

The Calling of Emily Evans (Women of the West #1)

This book is about a woman who is called by God to set up a church. She has many problems along the way, including poor attendance, a low food supply, and a difficulty convincing people that God is indeed real and needed in every single life. She does NOT step out of the boundaries of the Bible. Emily simply sets up a church and teaches because there is no preacher in the area. She doesn’t preach, only tries to help people see the importance of a faith in God and tries to help them understand the Bible and how important it is. This is a wonderful book that helped me understand things more clearly and get things sorted out in my own faith. I thank Janette Oke for writing such a great book.

Homespun Bride (Love Inspired Historical)

This book was one of the most enjoyable historical romances I’ve read in a while. Fans of western and inspirational romances are sure to enjoy this story of two people who had given up on a future together but are given a second chance to realize their dreams. The love story was incredibly sweet and emotional, rather than so many romances which focus on the physical romance but neglect the emotional side of a relationship. I’d highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy a sweet and emotional romance without all the graphic scenes.
And yet this was no stranger. Though she could not know it, her rescuer was rancher Thad McKaslin, the man who had once loved her more than life itself. Losing her had shaken all his most deeply held beliefs. Now he wondered if the return of this strong woman was a sign that somehow he could find his way home.
