Kaleidoscope Summer (Samantha’s Story)

Rita Garcia

Price: FREE

My favorite thing about about this novel by Rita Garcia was her characters, including the dogs! I especially loved the main character and could not wait to see if she would be able to work through her problems and solve the emotional puzzle of who she was in order to move forward with her life.

Verna Cole Mitchell

Samantha Forrester has it all together. Deafness at age fifteen has not hampered her success. Life, although predictable, has hit a comfortable stride.

Her world crumbles when secrets of the past are brought to light. She travels to Serenity Cove to settle her birth mother’s estate and search for her true identity. Samantha soon becomes enamored with the town. And then there’s police chief Logan Delatorre who startles her pulse, and grandparents who refuse to acknowledge her. More mystery unfolds when an attack is levied against her–someone wants her out of Serenity Cove.

Samantha’s faith is called into question when she stumbles over the need to forgive. Can Dr. Ellie Clarimonde help her connect the pieces of her past and learn the power of forgiveness?

Guardians of Eden

Graham Carter

I loved this book and have found myself relating details of it in conversations with friends. The author takes us on an amazing journey, with many twists and turns, toward Eden. This book, with its complex and exciting plot, and rich character development is hard to put down. Each chapter brings different challenges and adds new members to the delightful community of travellers in their passionate quest to find Eden and to understand Elohim’s purpose for Thalan’s life. As each new character’s identity and role is revealed, I found that it’s a great reminder that we, too, ‘have a unique part to play in the Master’s plan’ as we go through our lives.

Jeanette Donaldson

A thousand years have passed since Adam and Eve were cast from the Garden of Eden. Their descendants have multiplied and spread across the face of the planet. In recent times rumours have begun to spread regarding a strange race of beings, the Nephilim, said to be the giant offspring of unholy alliances between the fallen sons of God and women of great beauty.

Life in Thalan’s tiny, seaside village seems a world away from such events until the day servants of a Nephilim king arrive looking for him. Could it be that seventeen year-old Thalan holds the key to the downfall of these powerful giants? And what is the significance of the ancient prophecy about the seed of Eve crushing the serpent’s head? The answers lie in a quest to find the legendary Garden of Eden and the fabled Tree of Life that stands in its midst. But can Thalan and his brother survive the hostile journey to the other side of the world to find out?

Shattered Rose (Winsor Series)

TL Gray

Price: 99 cents

I saw some people talking about this book on Facebook and wondered if it’d be good for my 14-year-old daughter. I got it to read before giving it to her. This book was great and exceptionally enjoyable. I’m not a reader, but I ended up staying up late every night during the week because it captured my interest. It made me look forward to bed time so I could read more. I think I read the last 150 pages all on a Friday night staying up way past normal bed time for me. My wife wondered what had gotten into me. I’ll probably wait a couple years before giving it to my daughter to read, but I’m considering giving it to my 16-year-old son instead. I’ve seen many reviews here discussing the book’s value to girls, but there’s value here for boys as well. The two main male characters paint very different pictures on how to approach dating. Next time my son is in a dating relationship, I’d like to be able to ask him, “Are you treating her like Jake, or Parker?”

A Contemporary Inspirational Love Story

When obsession and love blend, and darkness consumes the mind and spirit, is it even possible to recognize the light?

Set in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, nineteen-year-old Avery Nichols embarks on a journey of love, loss and recognition that perfection is often an illusion. She gives all she has to the one man who cannot love her back, but still refuses let her go. Now another fights to give her everything she doesn’t believe she deserves.

It is the beginning of her sophomore year at Winsor University, and Avery is determined that nothing will stop her momentum, not even the internal battle she has fought for four years. Forced to live on campus because of her alumni scholarship, Avery is thrilled when she is placed in the coveted University Apartments and is swept away by her roommate’s cousin, Jake, whose charm and charisma touches every part of her soul and shatters every piece of her heart. Broken and lost, Avery meets Parker, a man who not only offers her hope, but also teaches her to love in ways she never thought possible.

Jake is complicated and damaged, fighting to find his way after the loss of his mother, and despite his every attempt to stop it, Avery gets behind his defenses and forces him to feel once again. He doesn’t want to love her, but can’t let her go. Parker is genuine, honest, and falls for Avery the moment he sees her. He wants nothing more than to love her, if she would only let him.

To Whisper Her Name (Belle Meade Plantation Novel, A)

Tamera Alexander

Price: $1.99

Oh. My. The wait for this book has been excruciating, but it was absolutely worth it. To Whisper Her Name sets the bar for historical romance. Once again, Tamera Alexander has created a masterful saga that swept me away, this time to Belle Meade plantation. I adored Ridley Cooper and Olivia Aberdeen. Their individual stories are captivating and heart-wrenching; their relationship is superbly depicted. I loved their clashes and snarky verbal sparring just as much as the tender moments that made me catch my breath. No one can write a scene to quicken the heart quite like Tamera can! This is romance done right–but this is so much more than a romance novel. Infused with rich historical detail, each page pulsates with emotion. Although the Civil War had officially ended, the wounds ran deep in the South and the rejoined states were far from united. Long-held attitudes and opinions about the role of the (now former) slaves, those who fought for the North, and anyone who dared to act outside of the strict Southern code of propriety resulted in tension that could escalate and erupt with the power of one of General Harding’s unbroken stallions. Tamera’s gift for character portrayal breathes life into the servants, the stable hands, and the Harding family. I could practically smell the horseflesh, taste the beaten biscuits, and hear the servants singing and clapping! A novel as grand as Belle Meade itself, To Whisper Her Name beckons you to sit a spell and experience a year on the plantation. I sighed when I read the last page and reluctantly closed the book. I’m ready for the next one!

Mocha With Linda

USA Today Bestseller

Set at Nashville’s historic Belle Meade Plantation, the most influential thoroughbred stud farm in America’s history, To Whisper Her Name weaves the struggles of real people of the post-war South with the journeys of a man and a woman scarred by betrayal.

Olivia Aberdeen, destitute widow of a man shot as a traitor to the South, is shunned by proper society and gratefully accepts an invitation from “Aunt” Elizabeth Harding, mistress of Belle Meade Plantation. Expecting to be the Harding’s head housekeeper, Olivia is disillusioned when she learns the real reason Elizabeth’s husband, Confederate General William Giles Harding, agreed to her coming. Not finding the safe haven she expects, Olivia is caught off guard by her feelings for Ridley Adam Cooper, a Southern man who seems anything but a Southern gentleman.

Branded a traitor by some, Ridley Cooper, a Southern son who chose to fight for the Union, is a man desperate to end the war still raging inside him. Determined to learn “the gift” that Belle Meade’s head horse trainer and former slave, Bob Green, possesses, Ridley harbors secrets that threaten both their lives.

As Ridley seeks to make peace within himself for “betraying” the South he loved, Olivia is determined to never be betrayed again.
