It is an action-packed mystery set in an ancient land with great attention to detail. I recommend this historical novel to all middle grade readers.

Laurie Cameron

Siblings Zet and Kat are in charge, now that their father is off fighting the Hyksos. But keeping food on the table is easier said than done. Sales are slow at their family market stall. It seems adults don’t approve of two children running the place. One day, Zet spots a thief running through their market square. Chasing him are three medjay police. When the thief gets away, the medjay announce a reward for the man’s capture. In desperate need of money, the siblings set off on a dangerous investigation–an investigation that brings them into forbidden temples, into chapels whispering with the voices of ancient gods, drawing them ever closer to a frightening truth that threatens to crush their family forever.

My kids and I really enjoy this well-written series where honesty, attentiveness and friendship are common themes.

Times Tables: A Simply Brilliant Way to Learn Multiplication

Sophy Hunte

Price: FREE

There is only one way to learn times tables and keep that knowledge into adulthood.

Repetition, repetition and yet more repetition.

Yes it sounds old fashioned, but it is a highly effective method that puts information into the long term memory of a child.

This book teaches tables from 1 to 12 and are learned out of order. This encourages instant recall rather than a hasty finger count to find the next answer. There are plenty of practice questions beginning with 3 numbers and adding in numbers gradually until all 12 are learned.

After the practice and learn questions, there is a test and then a challenge section. Once tables are learned, test and challenge sections can be used for review.

Give Up, Gecko!

Margaret Read Macdonald

Give Up, Gecko is an enjoyable children’s book about the importance of perseverance. The story revolves around the animal’s search for water. All the animals try to stomp their way to water but give up one by one, until the smallest animal, the gecko is the only one left. Although the other animals laugh at him and repeatedly call for him to quit, the Gecko keeps up his stomping for hours until he succeeds. Margaret MacDonald’s prose is clear and repetitive which is great for younger children, however it is the artwork by Deborah Melmon that is truly outstanding- the colors are vivid and bright and the illustrations fill the entire page. Our 1 year old son was mesmerized by the book and we look forward to reading it to him many times more. A great addition to any child’s bookshelf.

“Elephant! Elephant! Heavy! Heavy! Heavy! Elephant! Elephant! STOMP! STOMP! STOMP!” Elephant was shouting and stomping. But could he stomp a hole deep enough to reach water for the thirsty animals? Maybe…maybe not. All the animals tried until tiny Gecko Gecko takes a turn. He is small…but he is determined. And he’s not going to give up! Kids will love to chant and stomp along to this Ugandan folktale.
