How Much Do You Weigh?: The Stigma Defying Photobook
Price: FREE
This is an interesting and particularly relevant project for this day and age where women are culturally blasted with the message that it’s not enough to be thin – we should be thinner. We are asked to compare ourselves to computer generated photos of women who have weight taken off their pictures and they look like they are anorexic, bulimic, or addicted. I applaud the author and photographer for this book.
Surprise and serendipity await.
“Next time I go out with my friends, I’m bringing this book. I know it will spark some great conversation. And maybe we’ll be brave enough to tell each other the number that has too much control over our lives. The stigma lifts one person at a time.” –GeekMom.com
“The effect of ‘How Much Do You Weigh?’ in addition to confronting the taboo against publicly announcing/broadcasting the particulars of one’s weight, is that it recalibrates our ideas of what certain numbers on the scale are supposed to look like. If 180 pounds sounds “fat” in theory, it doesn’t necessarily look it in reality, which makes the whole enterprise of weight measurement — and, by extension, BMI — rather meaningless. –Anna Holmes, The Washington Post
“Nieto has created a vital project tackling a thorny issue.” –The Opinioness of the World.com
“Erin Nieto’s project, ‘How Much Do You Weigh?’… puts the body front-and-center, challenging us re-think what numbers mean. She counterposes photographs of volunteers with the number on the scale. These women model a refusal to be embarrassed by their weight and show us the imprecision of the number itself.” –Lisa Wade, Sociological Images

Every time I get a Guideposts Magazine, I first start by scanning the titles to see if Marion Bond West is one of the authors, so imagine my delight to find a whole book of her articles (and on Kindle, too.) This book did not disappoint. It was heartwarming and gently spoke to me. I felt that she had invited me into her home and shared some of her life with me. Loved this book.Very easy to follow instructions.I just started to ferment foods and will use this book as a reference many time.
If you look hard, you can find traditionally fermented foods from artisan food producers. Your neighborhood deli, health food store, or cultural market may have old-fashioned pickles or kraut, a microbrewery may produce traditional beers and ales, a baker may sell authentic sourdough, and an artisan cheesemaker may offer aged, cultured cheeses.
Or you can learn to make fermented foods yourself. The number of foods that can be fermented may astound you.
Vegetables become sauerkraut, pickles and more. You can ferment carrots, asparagus, green beans, beets, spinach stalks, radishes, peppers, and many other vegetables. Imagine flavorful, diverse salsas and relishes. You can ferment fruits, transforming them into wines and ciders, as well as jams, chutneys, relishes, salsas, and sauces. Ferment beans into soy sauce, miso, natto, and tempeh (all nutritious transformations of soy beans), as well as other bean pastes.
Dairy can also be fermented (or cultured) into sour cream, yogurt, kefir, buttermilk, all kinds of cheeses, and more. You can ferment different types of meats to create pickled fish, corned beef, and delicious sausages and salamis.
For long-term use and greater nutrition, you can ferment condiments such as mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, horseradish, guacamole, or pickled eggs, plus more! You can create natural sodas and traditional alcoholic beverages from roots, weeds, flowers, and honey, not only do they taste great they also have lots of nutritional benefits.
In this book you will find out:

The Freedom of Self Forgetfulness
Price: 99 cents
When I heard the content of this book when it was first delivered at Redeemer it totally changed my life. Even though, at the time I was a Christian, the freedom I came to understand by not associating myself with past sin/guilt have been totally transforming. This little book should be read by every Christian – and probably monthly!
This is one of the questions the Apostle Paul addresses as he writes to the church in Corinth. He’s not after some superficial outward tinkering, but instead a deep–rooted, life–altering change that takes place on the inside. In an age where pleasing people, puffing up your ego and building your résumé are seen as the methods to ‘make it’, the Apostle Paul calls us to find true rest in blessed self–forgetfulness.
In this short and punchy book, best–selling author Timothy Keller, shows that gospel–humility means we can stop connecting every experience, every conversation with ourselves and can thus be free from self–condemnation. A truly gospel–humble person is not a self–hating person or a self–loving person, but a self–forgetful person.
This freedom can be yours…
