Aging with Gracie (Welcome to Manhattan)

Heather Hunt

Living in Atlanta, I enjoyed the setting of the story which was the North Georgia mountains. The story was sweet and romantic with a nice dose of humor brought on by the residents of the retirement community. I would recommend this book for a fun afternoon with a book.

Nerdy Emma Grace Woodhouse has struggled with her weight and her mother’s meddling for years. When she is assigned to manage her father’s corporation’s latest acquisition in Manhattan, she is ecstatic that she will finally have a chance to prove herself. Unfortunately, Grace’s joy takes a sudden downward spiral when she discovers that the assignment is the overhaul of a retirement home in Manhattan…Manhattan, Georgia, of all places.

Grace resigns herself to tackling the overwhelming task of turning the retirement home into a welcoming and safe place for its elderly residents…a task made even more difficult by the destructive presence of a vindictive pair of former workers. Armed with a newfound sense of God’s grace, the friendship of a pair of feisty elderly residents, and a blossoming relationship with handsome general contractor, Jackson Ellis, Grace discovers that God’s plans for her life are not necessarily the ones she would have imagined…they are so much more amazing!

Heart of Gold

If you’re going to write an enjoyable Western romance novella, and you’re not going to go for an NC-17 rating to entertain your readers, what are you going to do? Well, you need to get the reader to quickly care about your characters; you need old-fashioned sparks, you know, chemistry — yeah, chemistry; you need the story to be fun and feel good; and a little danger doesn’t hurt. “Heart of Gold” has all that, so I liked it.

Daywriter

Wyoming, 1902–Ranch foreman Charlie Welch suspects his boss’s daughter has returned home with purely selfish motives–she wants money.

The Lightkeeper’s Ball (A Mercy Falls Novel)

Colleen Coble

Price: $2.99

The author weaves together suspense, romance, action and mystery along with several plot twists which held my attention until the final pages as I tried to guess who-dun-it. While there is a definite christian message it isn’t preachy or overwhelming.
While I enjoyed the mystery in this story, but the historical flavor of the book was what drew me to the story, that and the beautiful cover. Sometimes you can judge a book by the cover, and this one is a real winner!
Even though this is the third book in the Mercy Falls series it can easily be read as a stand alone work, I didn’t read the first two and had no problems jumping right into this story, but I liked the story so well I will be checking out the first two in the series.

At the elegant Mercy Falls masquerade ball, Olivia’s hidden identity will be revealed.

It is the dawn of a new century and Olivia Stewart is heiress to an empire. Her family numbers among the Four Hundred—those considered the wealthiest and most distinguished in America. Unfortunately their wealth has nearly disappeared, and now their security rests upon the Stewart daughters marrying well.

Olivia’s sister, Eleanor, was engaged to Harrison Bennett, one of the nation’s wealthiest men, but has since died. Now the pressure is on Olivia to take her place, despite her suspicions about Eleanor’s fiancé. Using her family’s long-forgotten English title, Olivia travels to Mercy Falls, California, as Lady Devonworth, hoping to learn more before committing to marriage. There she finds that Eleanor’s death was no accident. And Harrison is not the man she thought he would be.

When Mercy Falls holds a charity masquerade ball to raise funds for the new lighthouse, secrets—and truths long hidden—will be revealed. But can Harrison really love Olivia when he finds her true identity? Can she live with the repercussions of failing her family, or will she finally realize that nothing—not money, family, or romance—will ever compare to God’s unconditional love?

Courageous: A Novel

Randy Alcorn

Price: $1.99

This is a great book! As I read, I did not feel like I was reading just another story. This book was real. The characters and the story were believable. There were moments of frustration, moments of anticipation, moments when I laughed out loud, and moments when I cried as I read. Courageous is a book that will challenge your faith. Even though this book focused on the dads, I was challenged as a mom to take seriously the responsibility of rearing children that love God and love people. Every parents should read this book. I couldn’t put it down and look forward to watching the movie. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Tyndale Publishers in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

From the creators of Fireproof comes an inspiring new story about everyday heroes who long to be the kinds of dads that make a lifelong impact on their children. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, and their partners willingly stand up to the worst the world can offer. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. But they’re quickly discovering that their standard is missing the mark.
They know that God desires to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, but their children are beginning to drift farther and farther away from them. Will they be able to find a way to serve and protect those who are most dear to them? When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God . . . and to their children?

Surrender Bay: A Nantucket Love Story

Denise Hunter

Price: $2.99

To call Surrender Bay just a romance novel, though it is that, is to sell it short. It is a beautiful love story that I literally could not put down. The setting is enticing, the characters complex and their emotions and heartache palpable. Sam epitomises an adult whose heart and mind has been scarred by a traumatic childhood. Her first thought is to protect herself no matter what the cost to others and yet is so appealing that I wanted to comfort her myself! And Landon is compassionate, faithful and protective while remaining a realistic character, a tribute to Denise Hunter’s talent as a writer. Sam’s choices and their consequences are painful to read, Landon’s constancy is a joy and the romance is simply mesmerising.
God’s love, faithfulness and the heartache He endures to draw us back in to relationship with Him is powerfully told in this story by way of allegory. Without any overt reference to God, Denise has turned the spotlight on the depth of God’s love for His children in a story that will remain with you long after the last page is read.
I was so taken with Surrender Bay I have chosen is as one of my book club’s selections for 2008.

Rel Mollet

Once childhood friends, Samantha and Landon are now separated by distance and secrets. Will Samantha’s return to Nantucket bring her the peace she longs for?

Samantha Owens’ estranged stepfather has died, leaving her his cottage in Nantucket—a place she fled years ago, never planning to return. As a single mom, Samantha can’t afford to pass up a financial windfall like ocean-front property. So she travels home to fix up the house and sell it . . . never suspecting that Landon Reed still lives two doors down.

As their long-dormant romance begins to bud again, Samantha must face a past that separated her from the God of her childhood. And she must tell Landon why she fled the island in the first place—a secret that could tear them apart.

Is Landon’s love really as unconditional as he claims? And will Samantha finally realize that the God she found all those years ago never abandoned her?

A heart-tugging tale of shattered trust, growing faith, and love that endures . . . all in a romantic seaside setting.
