The Boy No One Loved: A Heartbreaking True Story of Abuse, Abandonment and Betrayal

The Boy No One Loved: A Heartbreaking True Story of Abuse, Abandonment and Betrayal

Casey Watson

Price: $1.99

I really enjoyed reading this book, and couldn’t put it down after I started it. I am a big Cathy Glass fan, and find this book very similar to hers. The main difference is that Casey runs a specialist fostering program for ‘last chance’ children, who have nowhere else to go due to too many placement breakdowns caused by their behaviour. I’ve already downloaded the next book, and can’t wait to get stuck in. Thanks Casey, you’re an amazing and very special lady.

Megan F

The first in a series of books from foster carer Casey Watson.

‘We’re hungry,’ his brother cried. ‘We’re hungry, Justin. Please find us some food.’

Justin was five years old; his brothers two and three. Their mother, a heroin addict, had left them alone again. Later that day, after trying to burn down the family home, Justin was taken into care.

Justin was taken into care at the age of five after deliberately burning down his family home. Six years on, after 20 failed placements, Justin arrives at Casey’s home. Casey and her husband Mike are specialist foster carers. They practice a new style of foster care that focuses on modifying the behaviour of profoundly damaged children. They are Justin’s last hope, and it quickly becomes clear that they are facing a big challenge.

Try as they might to make him welcome, he seems determined to strip his life of all the comforts they bring him, violently lashing out at schoolmates and family and throwing any affection they offer him back in their faces. After a childhood filled with hurt and rejection, Justin simply doesn’t want to know. But, as it soon emerges, this is only the tip of a chilling iceberg.

A visit to Justin’s mother on Boxing Day reveals that there are some very dark underlying problems that Justin has never spoken about. As the full picture becomes clearer, and the horrific truth of Justin’s early life is revealed, Casey and her family finally start to understand the pain he has suffered…

Includes a sample chapter of Crying for Help.

Homegrown Humus: Cover Crops in a No-till Garden

Homegrown Humus: Cover Crops in a No-till Garden

Anna Hess

Price: FREE

In this really good short summary, you get pretty much everything you needed to know about Green Manures aka cover crops. This is a book for hobbyists, gardeners, and backyard farmers, and perhaps a good review of the topic for professionals.

M. Padro

Homegrown humus is easy with cover crops!

Cover crops are a simple, cheap way to boost your soil’s organic matter, to fight weeds, to prevent erosion, to attract pollinators, and to keep the ecosystem in balance. Unfortunately, most information on growing cover crops is written for people who plow their soil every year and are willing to spray herbicides. You can get all of the same benefits in a no-till garden, though, if you’re clever.

Homegrown Humus details three no-till winners in depth – buckwheat, oilseed radishes, and oats. Profiles of other species suggest gardening conditions when you might want to try out sunflowers, annual ryegrass, barley, rye, Austrian winter peas, crimson clover, or cowpeas as well.

Meanwhile, the book delves into finding cover crop seeds, planting cover crops in a no-till garden, and easily killing cover crops without tilling or herbicide use. Understanding the C:N ratio of cover crops helps determine how long to wait between killing cover crops and planting vegetables, as well as how to maximize the amount of humus you’re adding to your soil.

Cover crops are an advanced gardening technique bound to increase your vegetable yields, but are simple enough for beginners. Give your garden a treat – grow some buckwheat!
