In Honor Bound (The Chastelayne Trilogy)

“In Honor Bound” is most definitely my all-time favorite book! The basic plot is that of a power-hungry king who will stop at nothing to keep his bloodlines pure – including destroying his entire family! A young girl named Rosalynde falls in love with the king’s second oldest son, Phillip. However, Phillip’s heart already belongs to another woman. When this woman is burned at the stake in a twisted plot by the king to get rid of her, Phillip loses control… This book is the perfect story for anyone seeking a romance centered around God and without all the sexual graphics found in secular novels!
Forced into a political marriage, Philip tells his bride, “I will not lie to you, I will not be unfaithful to you, and I will not love you. My heart is pledged to another and I am not a man to break an oath.”
His one true love is a lowly serving girl. When Philip refuses to set her aside in order to form a politically beneficial marriage, his father has the girl tried on false charges and executed. He then forces Philip to marry the beautiful and nobly born Lady Rosalynde. Devastated and embittered by his loss and his father’s betrayal, Philip is determined to never love again . . . not his father, not his wife, not his God. Although Rosalynde adores him, he withholds his heart from her, refusing to let even death end his devotion to the love he lost. Despite his coldness towards her, Rosalynde is determined to love him and teach him to love her — as determined as the God he has turned his back on. As civil war rages throughout the realm, Philip faces a greater struggle within himself. Will he open his heart to love again or let his pride destroy him and his kingdom?
DeAnna Julie Dodson is the author of The Chastelayne Trilogy: “In Honor Bound,” “By Love Redeemed” and “To Grace Surrendered” and the contemporary mysteries, “Letters in the Attic,” “The Key in the Attic,” “The Diary in the Attic” and “The Legacy in the Attic.” Writing as Julianna Deering, she is author of the 1930s Drew Farthering Mystery series which includes “Rules of Murder” and “Death by the Book,” coming from Bethany House Publishers beginning in August, 2013.

I have read many a historical romance novel, some I have loved, some I haven’t, but I can safely say, without a shadow of a doubt, that The Rebel’s Pledge was one of my true favourites. This delightful story not only captured my imagination effortlessly, but I felt as if I were watching this story unfolding upon a movie screen before me; that nuance of regret surfacing when it finally came to an end. Rita Gerlach’s flawless ability to create a historical atmosphere or place pictures and faces in your mind without an abundance of needless description is immense. An over-descriptive story would usually find me skipping through paragraphs, but The Rebels Pledge had me wanting to read every single word. This novel transports you back in time and each uniquely characteristic person within the story can inveigle his or her own emotion from you through Rita’s writing. I am, myself, an aspiring authoress of historical romance living in the UK and because of this, had to order this book, then wait patiently for some weeks for it to arrive. It was definitely worth the wait and I sincerely hope that one day not only will I write as lovely a story as The Rebels Pledge, but also become as gifted an author of historical romance as Rita Gerlach.
