Mary Magdalene is a fascinating but mysterious character in the New Testament. The authors of the gospels do not give much information about her past other than where she was from and that she was healed of demon possession. Diana Wallis Taylor does a great job filling in the blanks in this fictional account of Mary’s past. The internal torture Mary goes through with headaches, seizures, having to be locked up so she wouldn’t hurt herself or anyone else, being ostracized in the community and called “Mad Mary” makes your heart hurt. Her husband, family and close family friends stay by her side through very difficult times and make the choice to stick by Mary even though it looks like there will be no end to her torment. The healing she receives from Jesus gave me a better understanding of why she was so devoted to Jesus. The book also gives you an idea of how she might have come to be one of Jesus’ followers and the first one to see Jesus alive after his death and resurrection. I like how this book is written and would highly recommend it.
Lovers of historical and biblical fiction will find this creative telling of Mary’s story utterly original and respectful as it opens their eyes to the redeeming work of Christ in the lives of those who follow him.

Out of Control (The Kincaid Brides Book #1)
Price: FREE
The spiritual aspect of this book I thought was more enlightening than any of her other books. Both the hero and heroine are dealing with trying to please their worldly fathers instead of their heavenly fathers and their struggles with finding God in the midst of heartache was profound. I enjoyed watching these characters grow and I’m excited to see how the story continues in book 2. If you haven’t read any of Connealy’s books it is about time to start, she just has a way with Christians Westerns unlike any other author.
Rafe Kincaid has spent years keeping his family’s cattle ranch going, all without help from his two younger brothers, who fled the ranch – and Rafe’s controlling ways – as soon as they were able. He’s haunted by one terrible day at the cave on a far-flung corner of the Kincaid property, a day that changed his life forever. Ready to put the past behind him, he plans to visit the cave one final time. He sure doesn’t expect to find a young woman trapped in one of the tunnels – or to be forced to kiss her!
Rafe is more intrigued by Julia than any woman he’s ever known, but how can he overlook her fascination with the cave he despises? And when his developing relationship with Julia threatens his chance at reconciliation with his brothers, will he be forced to choose between the family bonds that could restore his trust and the love that could heal his heart?

A Love Forbidden, A Novel (Heart of the Rockies)
Price: $2.99
Along the way of exploring these paths, a lot of solid and realistic action occurs without an abundance of additional characters monopolizing parts of the book when they will add little to it. Minus a few dozen pages at Shiloh’s home, the book focuses on Shiloh and Jesse moving forward…and I liked that. It sets this book apart from many other Christian volumes in that the relationship is THE book instead of part of it…and it’s probably my favorite exploration of a mixed relationship in Christian fiction since “Courting Morrow Little” by Laura Frantz (I highly recommend that book). I look forward to the next book in the “Heart of the Rockies” series, as the first two were definitely worthwhile!
Set amongst the wilds of the Colorado Rockies in 1879, this is a tale of a forbidden love and a faith tested in the cauldron of intolerance and the harsh realities of life on the untamed frontier. Bestselling author Kathleen Morgan deftly explores themes of mercy, fidelity to one’s beliefs despite what others think or do, and compassion for those different from oneself as she plumbs the depths of the human heart and the healing power of God’s love.

Sarai (Wives of the Patriarchs Book #1): A Novel
Price: $2.99
Smith uncovers a time era we love to escape to and does not disappoint. You will identify with each character and have a better understanding of history when you finish reading Sarai. I am looking forward to the release of the second in the series, Rebekah, and will find it hard waiting patiently for its release next year. But then again, that’s the Sarai in me.
But as the years stretch on and Sarai’s womb remains empty, she becomes desperate to fulfill her end of the bargain – lest Abram decide that he will not fulfill his. To what lengths will Sarai go in her quest to bear a son? And how long will Abram’s patience last?
Jill Eileen Smith thrilled readers with The Wives of King David series. Now she brings to life the strong and celebrated wives of the patriarchs, beginning with the beautiful and inscrutable Sarai.
