Has Christianity Failed You?

Has Christianity Failed You?

Ravi Zacharias

In 2006, Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM) held an open forum at the Fox Theater in Atlanta to address the subject: “Has Christianity Failed You?” Tickets were sold for the event and—to the complete surprise of everyone—the event was sold out with a capacity crowd of over 5,000. People lined up offering to buy tickets from folks in line for higher prices.
Before the event, an RZIM cameraman walked the streets and asked people if they had rejected the faith they held at one time. One answered that, because of a Christian’s rejection of his gay lifestyle he had done just that. Another answered that she had left her faith because she had fallen into adultery and could never live it down in the church. Others had their own reasons. Some said it was just intellectually untenable in an age of reason. They chose to come to the event to judge if there were adequate answers.
It is estimated that for every one person who writes a letter or attends an event, there are one thousand who agree. If the Atlanta crowd was any indication, the question is real and troubling.
Why is it that many live with silent doubt, many leaving the “evangelical fold” for something else? Is there something wrong with the message, the communicator, the hearer…or is it all three?
It’s time to ask the hard questions of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ and why it seems as though God has made it so hard to continue believing. In fact, the son of a prominent U.S. Senator phoned me with that very question. “Why has God made it so hard to believe in Him?” Such skepticism is not just representative of the hostile; it also represents many honest questioners.
This book attempts to lay out the response to those within as well as those outside the Christian faith so as to understand what it is we believe and why it is so hard to do so. More to the point: Why it is actually so hard to deny God and still make sense out of life? In the end the answers should be both felt and real, with the added truth that God is nearer than you think. He desires that we sense Him very near to us and not distant. But closeness comes at a cost just as any relationship of love and commitment does

The Newcomer (Amish Beginnings Book #2)

Suzanne Woods Fisher

In 1737, Anna Konig and her fellow church members stagger off a small wooden ship after ten weeks at sea, eager to start a new life in the vibrant but raw Pennsylvania frontier. On the docks of Port Philadelphia waits bishop Jacob Bauer, founder of the settlement and father to ship carpenter Bairn. It’s a time of new beginnings for the reunited Bauer family, and for Anna and Bairn’s shipboard romance to blossom.

But this perfect moment cannot last. As Bairn grasps the reality of what it means to be Amish in the New World–isolated, rigid with expectations, under the thumb of his domineering father–his enthusiasm evaporates. When a sea captain offers the chance to cross the ocean one more time, Bairn grabs it. Just one more crossing, he promises Anna. But will she wait for him?

When Henrik Newman joins the church just as it makes its way to the frontier, Anna is torn. He seems to be everything Bairn is not–bold, devoted, and delighted to vie for her heart. And the most dramatic difference? He is here; Bairn is not.

Far from the frontier, an unexpected turn of events weaves together the lives of Bairn, Anna, and Henrik. When a secret is revealed, which true love will emerge?

The Spiritual Warrior’s Guide to Defeating Jezebel: How to Overcome the Spirit of Control, Idolatry and Immorality

Jennifer LeClaire

Leading Prophetic Voice Reveals New Insight on Defeating an Ancient Evil

According to leading prophetic voice Jennifer LeClaire, the subversive Jezebel spirit continues to deceive many. She shows, with keen biblical insight, that Jezebel does much more than most believers thought–and that it’s time to expose the deceit and defeat the spirit’s insidious work.

By pulling back the curtain on this seducing principality, LeClaire picks up where other books on Jezebel leave off. She demonstrates biblically not only that the Jezebel spirit uses control as a weapon but that it is a mastermind of immorality and outright idolatry. She also gives spiritual warriors the real-world strategies needed for defeating this dark spirit in the lives of God’s people.

Are you working for cash, a career, a cause—or a calling? “Why do you do what you do?”

People work for a variety of reasons.

For many, the primary purpose of their work is cash. Their principal motivation is the paycheck that funds their everyday needs. Their work is a means to an end. Others are motivated by ambitions for a career, to move up the professional ladder and expand their experience, becoming more skilled in a particular area. Still others work for a cause, believing in the wider purpose of their work, attempting to make a difference in the world—to leave a mark in some way.

All of these are legitimate motivations. However, missing from all three is any sense of the value of work itself. The focus is on the output of the workplace, rather than valuing the input.

What we need is calling. Those who see their work as a calling experience a rich integration in their lives. They sense a purpose, a direction to their activities. Work has intrinsic meaning, rather than being simply a means to an end. In many ways this is precisely what the Spirit of God does in our lives. When we are in the flow of the Spirit, we are cooperating fully in our God-given callings. When people embrace their callings, they love their work, can manage inevitable tensions that arise, and are welcomed by their colleagues, who sense that there is something beyond the cash or career objectives. But how do we get there?

Know Your Why is written with one objective: to help you find your life’s calling so that you can be more satisfied, fulfilled, and happier at work.

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.”

—John 15:16 NIV

What Is the Bible?: How an Ancient Library of Poems, Letters, and Stories Can Transform the Way You Think and Feel About Everything

What Is the Bible?: How an Ancient Library of Poems, Letters, and Stories Can Transform the Way You Think and Feel About Everything

Rob Bell

Rob Bell, the beloved author of Love Wins and What We Talk About When We Talk About God, goes deep into the Bible to show how it is more revelatory, revolutionary, and relevant than we ever imagined—and offers a cogent argument for why we need to look at it in a fresh, new way.

In Love Wins, Rob Bell confronted the troubling questions that many people of faith were afraid to ask about heaven, hell, fate, and faith. Using the same inspired, inquisitive approach, he now turns to our most sacred book, the Bible. What Is the Bible? provides insights and answers that make clear why the Bible is so revered and what makes it truly inspiring and essential to our lives.

Rob takes us deep into actual passages to reveal the humanity behind the Scriptures. You cannot get to the holy without going through the human, Rob tells us. When considering a passage, we shouldn’t ask “Why did God say . . .?” To get to the heart of the Bible’s meaning, we should be asking: “What’s the story that’s unfolding here and why did people find it important to tell it? What was it that moved them to record these words? What was happening in the world at that time? What does this passage/story/poem/verse/book tell us about how people understood who they were and who God was at that time?” In asking these questions, Rob goes beyond the one-dimensional question of “is it true?” to reveal the Bible’s authentic transformative power.

Rob addresses the concerns of all those who see the Bible as God’s Word but are troubled by the ethical dilemmas, errors, and inconsistencies in Scripture. With What Is the Bible?, he recaptures the Good Book’s magic and reaffirms its power and inspiration to shape and inspire our lives today.

The Hideaway

The Hideaway

Lauren K. Denton

“A story both powerful and enchanting: a don’t-miss novel in the greatest southern traditions of storytelling.” —Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times bestselling author

When her grandmother’s will wrenches Sara back home, she learns more about Margaret Van Buren in the wake of her death than she ever knew in life.

After her last remaining family member dies, Sara Jenkins goes home to The Hideaway, her grandmother Mags’s ramshackle B&B in Sweet Bay, Alabama. She intends to quickly tie up loose ends then return to her busy life and thriving antique shop in New Orleans. Instead, she learns Mags has willed The Hideaway to her and charged her with renovating it—no small task considering her grandmother’s best friends, a motley crew of senior citizens, still live there.

Rather than hurrying back to New Orleans, Sara stays in Sweet Bay and begins the biggest house-rehabbing project of her career. Amid drywall dust, old memories, and a charming contractor, she discovers that slipping back into life at The Hideaway is easier than she expected.

Then she discovers a box Mags left in the attic with clues to a life Sara never imagined for her grandmother. With help from Mags’s friends, Sara begins to piece together the mysterious life of bravery, passion, and choices that changed her grandmother’s destiny in both marvelous and devastating ways.

When an opportunistic land developer threatens to seize The Hideaway, Sara is forced to make a choice—stay in Sweet Bay and fight for the house and the people she’s grown to love or leave again and return to her successful but solitary life in New Orleans.

“Two endearing heroines and their poignant storylines of love lost and found make this the perfect book for an afternoon on the back porch with a glass of sweet tea.” —Karen White, New York Times bestselling author

A Cabin Full of Food: Filling your pantry, and using it

Marie Beausoleil

Almost a thousand recipes, cooking ideas and information on cooking “homestead style” – simple, basic, home-grown ingredients, simple tools and old-fashioned recipes.

For several years, I have gathered recipes and information from my friends, including many in the Old Order Mennonite community.

A lot of these recipes are ones I use daily on our off-grid homestead – with limited electricity and no refrigerator or freezer, I focus on recipes that can be made without electric appliances.

No microwave recipes in here! In fact, with a cooler and some ice to keep things cool, and a way to cook, many of these recipes work well for camping or traveling.

This is not an “ultimate” cookbook, but a way to show you how I fill my pantry and cook great meals from what I store.

Recipes are written in paragraph style with bolded ingredients for easy reading.

Just imagine I’m talking to you on the phone and telling you how to make my friend’s amazing pickle recipe or my Mom’s every day White Bread.

I truly hope you enjoy.
Love,
Marie

The Mystery of History, Volume I Quarter 1: Creation to the Resurrection

The Mystery of History, Volume I Quarter 1: Creation to the Resurrection

Linda Lacour Hobar

CHRONOLOGICAL, CHRISTIAN, and COMPLETE
A World History Curriculum for All Ages
The Mystery of History, Volume I (Second Edition), spans “Creation to the Resurrection” (c. 4004 b.c.–c. a.d. 33) and provides a historically accurate, Bible-based approach to learning ancient world history. By incorporating hands-on activities along with reading, writing, and research projects, The Mystery of History offers something for all learning styles and supports all methods of education.

Chronological — Beginning with Creation, The Mystery of History four-volume series presents world history in chronological order, covering the nations of China, Egypt, Greece, India, Israel, Persia, Rome, and more. Of great significance, Volume I weaves “Bible history” and “world history” together in a unique and meaningful way. For example, on the same timeline you will see these Bible characters near their world-famous contemporaries: Joshua and King Tut; Daniel and Aesop; Ezekiel and Buddha; Nehemiah and Socrates, and many more.

Christian — The Mystery of History is distinctly written from a Christian worldview. Creation-based, Christ-centered, and standing on the authoritative Word of God, lessons in The Mystery of History are like fragments of a mosaic that, when put together, reveal a much bigger picture and tell a much larger story. From Noah, Abraham, and Moses, to Nebuchadnezzar, Artaxerxes, and Augustus Caesar, the Lord has been at work to reveal Himself to mankind through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Complete — Divided into thirty-six weeks of study, The Mystery of History, Volume I, is easy to use for one student at home, ten in a co-op, or hundreds in a school. Reading three lessons a week, students and teachers can implement any of the following components contained in this volume to make this a complete, easily customized course in ancient times.

The Wiersbe Bible Study Series: Jeremiah: Taking a Stand for the Truth

Warren W. Wiersbe

Hundreds of years before Christ’s birth, the people of Judah were in full rebellion. Influenced by the pagan culture surrounding them, the Israelites began to worship idols instead of the one true God. As their depravity grew and destruction loomed, a lone prophet was given an enormous task: call God’s people back to Him.

The Wiersbe Bible Study Series explores timeless wisdom found in God’s Word. Based on Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe’s popular “BE” series of commentaries, each study provides topical, relevant insights from selected books of the Bible. Designed for small groups or individuals, this eight-week study examines events that led to the fall of Isreal, while exploring the heart and mission of a prophet who made a decision to stand for the Lord no matter what.
