The Memory Jar (Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors)

Tricia Goyer

Price: $2.99

After reading The Big Sky series, I became a fan of Tricia Goyer’s writings. I have read numerous Amish fiction books and you would think that another book would be clichéd or stale, but The Memory Jar is a beautifully written romantic tale. The main characters, Sarah and Jathan, are never portrayed as perfect. They have flaws and issues making them seem more realistic. Like I said, I have read many Amish fiction novels, but this is the first that I have read that deals with young Amish men going on hunting trips. I found it interesting that someone would leave their home for long periods of time just to go hunting. From the shocking prologue, to the final pages, I could not put the book down until I had finished reading it. The Memory Jar is a well written Amish love story that I recommend to other readers.

Coffee Ramblings

Every year, 30–40 young Amish men descend on the cozy little town of West Kootenai, Montana, arriving in the spring to live there for six months and receive ‘resident’ status for the hunting season in the fall. They arrive as bachelors, but go home with brides!
Sarah Shelter has lived in West Kootenai for the last ten years and wonders if she will ever fall in love. Since the tragic death of her best friend, she carries her memories in a jar along with the small items connected to them. For just as long, she’s also been carrying around her emotions instead of allowing them to penetrate deep into her heart.
Now she’s met a kind and gentle man who may be able to break down the wall. But can Sarah risk her heart to finally achieve her dreams?

Take One (Above the Line Series)

Karen Kingsbury

Price: $1.99

I enjoyed this book – read it on a plane and it kept me from watching the movie; an encouraging story of hope and change and not too emotionally threatening or distressing as some of these stories can be ; with enough action, character depth and engagement -

Sue Foley

Could they change the world—before the world changes them?
Filmmakers Chase Ryan and Keith Ellison left the mission field of Indonesia for the mission field of Hollywood with a dream bigger than both of them. Now they have done the impossible: raised enough money to produce a feature film with a message that could change the world.
But as Chase and Keith begin shooting, their well-laid plans begin to unravel. With millions of dollars on the line, they make a desperate attempt to keep the film from falling apart—even as a temperamental actress, a botched production schedule, and their own insecurities leave little room for the creative and spiritual passion that once motivated them. Was God really behind this movie after all? A chance meeting and friendship with John Baxter could bring the encouragement they need to stay on mission and produce a movie that will actually change people’s lives.
In the midst of the questions and the cameras, is it possible to keep things above the line and make a movie unlike anything done before—or is the risk too great for everyone?

Ready or Not

Chautona Havig

Price: FREE

I laughed, sighed, and groaned and rejoiced with this family. Most importantly, Ready Or Not provided good brain-food about human nature, and my own heart. I’ll not soon forget Aggie, for like all characters worth meeting, she’s shown me aspects of myself, yet simultaneously opened my eyes beyond myself. The wisdom, humor, and capable writing style in the Aggie series have me eagerly awaiting more by this author.

E. Dell

Fresh out of college, Aggie Milliken thinks she’s prepared for anything life can throw her way. Think again, Aggie!

After the abrupt loss of her sister and brother-in-law, Aggie is stunned to find herself the sole guardian of their eight lively children. If learning basic parenting skills wasn’t complicated enough, she must also battle the children’s half-crazed grandmother, survive a massive remodeling project, and navigate the waters of new friendships-alone.

She has little experience with children and none with housekeeping, and it shows. What she has going for her is grit, a double dose of determination, and the confidence that this is exactly where the Lord wants her to be. With an unlimited P-mail account and enough hymns to keep her spirits bolstered, she tackles one catastrophe after another.

It seems like nothing Aggie does is right, but ready or not, here she comes!

choking

Choking on a Camel

Michal Ann McArthur

Price: FREE

Michal Ann McArthur’s “Choking on a Camel” resonates not only with the reader who has struggled with her (or his) Christian faith, but also with the unbeliever who, along with the novel’s deeply religious main character, Alex, asks over and over again how a loving God could possibly allow the pain and suffering she sees all around her. For the reader who experienced the violent collision of faith and fact in the tumultuous 60′s and 70′s, the novel’s clear-eyed view of those years – the Civil Rights Movement, the Sexual Revolution, the Viet Nam War, the assassinations of JFK, Martin Luther King, and Bobby Kennedy – reawakens the deep sense of angst that honest inquiry into the Christian faith demanded in those years. It shoves that inquiry unapologetically into the plastic smiles of unthinking Christians who trudged (and today trudge) dutifully along behind their self-appointed spiritual gurus, daring them to answer. Yet throughout the well-crafted story line, and despite Alex’s angst, the reader will glimpse again and again the unmistakable signs of hope for Christian faith that Alex desperately seeks. Her endless questioning, her relentless unspoken doubts, are repeatedly swept away by the realization that a loving God may yet exist.
McArthur’s brilliantly engaging debut novel is not for the spiritually squeamish or the religiously closed-minded. It is a study of the stark realities of the Christian faith that some will not – and others probably should not – step into. Yet for the reader whose faith in God is unshakable, for the reader whose faith journey is only just beginning, and for reader whose faith is looking honestly into the abyss of doubt, “Choking on a Camel” may be a deep breath of spiritual fresh air, one that leaves the reader satisfied “for now” but wanting more … and very soon.

D.A. Andrist

Alex Ferguson

Compulsive skeptic. Devout believer. At odds with the group-think at her fundamentalist university. Preached at and taken advantage of. Agonizing over the recent death of her brother. Hurting for the larger world she lives in. Wrestling with the God she wants to love but maybe hates and definitely doesn’t understand.

The Gluten Free Baking Mix Cookbook

Lynn’s Kitchen Adventures

Price: 99 cents

My husband and I have been gluten-free for about 18 months, and one of things that is frustrating about being gluten-free is that there are so many recipes that we used to love that we just can’t make now, or that take so much time and so many different flours that making the recipes is a major pain. Having a homemade gluten-free baking mix is like the Holy Grail for people who are gluten-free, because it means that not only can we still make meals like we used to, but our bank account won’t be drained dry because we don’t have to purchase the expensive store-bought boxed mixes! This cookbook makes being gluten-free less of a chore and our kids love that they can have a lot of their old favorite recipes again.

Joy M

Gluten free baking can often be time consuming and tasteless, but it does not have to be. Gluten free food can be quick and easy to make, and it can and should taste great!

The Gluten Free Baking Mix Cookbook will show you how your gluten free baked goods can taste great without spending a lot of time in the kitchen. This is food your whole family will enjoy. Yes, both gluten free and non-gluten free eaters will enjoy this food.

The Self-Propelled Advantage: The Parent’s Guide to Raising Independent, Motivated Kids Who Learn with Excellence

Joanne Calderwood

Price: $1.99

This book is such an encouragement for mom’s who are or have an interest in schooling their children at home. It is a great example of how doable this daunting task is and not only doable, but shows how you can be successful! I really believe that the author is on to something that seems to be going more and more by the wayside-making your kids responsible and accountable for themselves! Another thing being lost in our society today is kids having time to figure out who they are and what their passions are in life. I love how she shows that the kids can pursue their own interests and figure out what they love to do and what their gifts are because they have the time to do it. For anyone looking for some advice on how to begin schooling your kids and eventually teaching them to manage themselves this is the book for you. I for one think I will enjoy more of the time I spend with my kids because I will not be burned out trying to micromanage their day!

Momma Bear

Joanne Calderwood has been a popular magazine columnist for several years and has become a very popular speaker at home-education conferences across the country. Her self-propelled philosophy of education has transformed lives across the nation and the world. She is considered a “Mom Magnet” due to her down-to-earth persona and ability to speak to the real issues of parenting in the twenty-first century. “The Self-Propelled Advantage” is a complete synopsis of her wisdom, experience, and philosophy of education and parenting, as borne out in the lives of her own exceptional children. This book will be extremely popular with anyone who currently places a high value on the education of their children. “The Self-Propelled Advantage” also contains valuable information on preparing for college entrance exams like the SAT and ACT. With one SAT perfect scorer, one near-perfect scorer, and four students who have gone to college on full academic scholarships, she has the results to provide provenance to her work.

Reluctant Entertainer, The: Every Woman’s Guide to Simple and Gracious Hospitality

Sandy Coughlin

Price: $1.99

Read. This. Book. I still feel I can’t really open our home to anyone at this time, but we do have plans to move into a little bit bigger space in the near future, and I’m very inspired to begin finding out how much hospitality is inside of me. This book will be used as a reference for ideas and a source of courage when I lose my nerve about having people over. I believe our society may have lost the art of hospitality, but that it is not lost forever. I truly can’t say enough how much I loved this.

Victoria Kimble

Hospitality can be a blessing to both the host and her guests, but for many women today, it simply doesn’t happen. Feelings of inadequacy, unrealistic expectations, fear of failure, lack of time–all conspire to steal the joy that comes from opening one’s home and sharing fellowship with others. In The Reluctant Entertainer, Sandy Coughlin relates to people in real ways about real meals that mortals cook, during which real conversations draw people together. Would-be hostesses will discover that true hospitality is not about being perfect, cooking a fancy meal, or spending a lot of money. Rather, it’s about an open door and an open heart.

Once-A-Day At the Table Family Devotional: 365 Daily Readings and Conversation Starters for Your Family

Christopher D. Hudson

Price: $2.99

“Once-A-Day At The Table Family Devotional: 365 Daily Readings and Conversation Starters For Your Family” (hereinafter “At The Table”) by Christian author Christopher Hudson provides a wonderful, non-denominational basis for those families choosing to hold daily devotions. Short selections remove the lack-of-time excuse upon which many of us rely. Discussion questions are thought-provoking and answers can be related to current events and modern life. This aspect alone should help engage children and teens who may be less enthusiastic about daily devotions based more on denominational doctrine. The text is written in a manner simple enough to allow younger children to participate in the discussion and benefit from the day’s devotion.
Each daily selection contained in “At The Table” is formatted in a consistent and identical layout. The daily devotion is prefaced with two discussion questions. In addition to focusing participants on their faith, these questions provide a good basis for the message which follows. Either an Old or a New Testament passage is then inserted above the message text as an introductory to each day’s devotional making up the primary portion of the particular day’s selection. A brief prayer completes each day’s page.
Families wanting to begin a daily devotion time and those already implementing one will find “Once-A-Day At The Table Family Devotional: 365 Daily Readings and Conversation Starters For Your Family” a valuable resource. Christopher Hudson has done a fine job compiling this book.

delicateflower152

The Once-A-Day At the Table Family Devotional helps you discuss the principles and promises in the Bible as you enjoy a meal together. With 365 daily readings to help you start conversations with your family around the dinner table, it’s perfect for the family who wants to take time to center their lives on God’s Word. This devotional ebook suggests topics for conversation and then gives you a brief scripture passage and a devotion to read together.
Each daily reading includes:
Scripture text from the most popular modern-English Bible translation, the NIV
A devotional reading for family discussion
Questions to consider as together you discuss the day’s topic
A closing prayer

This Very Moment

Rachel Ann Nunes

Price: FREE

Rachel Ann Nunes is a most satisfying writer with an optimistic but not unrealistic view of life. THIS VERY MOMENT is a little deeper than most romances. It has all the thrills of two disillusioned people learning to trust and truly love on a more profound level than in their first youths.
But what lifts it above the ordinary is that Nunes explores that part of character on which we base life-long beliefs, and shows how early trust and faith can be crushed. She unflinchingly examines the conflict of what we were, what we are now, and what we might become, depending on our choices. She explores the enigma of how parts of our souls which have died can live again more powerfully than if they had never been tested nor doubted.
This novel is a well-written and uplifting read, though it ended too quickly for my tastes. Nunes later novels show even deeper and more mature development of personal quandaries and their solutions — or of the peace that can comes in spite of no solution.

L.N. Davis

A compelling story of heartbreaking loss, inspiring faith, and a newfound love strong enough to heal all wounds.

Bill Dubrey is a sought-after plastic surgeon for LA’s prestigious and wealthy, and an equally sought-after bachelor. On the surface it appears he has it all—money, respect, and fame. Yet behind his aloof exterior lurks a tragic past that prevents him from finding lasting happiness.

All that changes on the day Kylee Stewart reenters his life. She alone knows Bill’s secret agony, and she is determined to help him face his past. During the years they’ve been apart, Kylee’s own life has been far from easy, but unlike Bill, she has turned to God in her need, finding a faith to which she desperately clings.

The tentative friendship they begin has Bill rethinking his stark future, yet he keeps his heart in check—afraid to commit, afraid to lose again. During Kylee’s darkest moment, when she needs him most, will he be there for her?

Best-selling author Rachel Ann Nunes offers This Very Moment, a captivating read for everyone who enjoys a page-turning Christian romance!

Composing Amelia

Alison Strobel

Price: FREE

Composing Amelia is a well-written novel that explores a lot of difficult issues. Prayer, childhood shaping, real “Christianity” vs. social, mental illness, marriage and faith, and each of these areas are handled with respect and an honesty that is refreshing. The trend of telling it like it often is rather than the sanitized version of what it “should” be in Christian Fiction is an excellent trend. Why? Because stories should grab the heart, and a good story grabs the heart and hangs onto it. A story designed to tell the truth about life and the need we have to become better rather than victims is a good story indeed.
Good story that it is, Composing Amelia not without areas that could be controversial and challenging to those who prefer very sanitized stories. However, if you long for fiction that points to God and tells the truth about we complicated and challenging humans who need Him, get a copy.

Kelly Klepfor

Breaker’s Reef (Cape Refuge Series)

Terri Blackstock

Price: $1.99

I think this is the most satisfying mystery from Teri Blackstock yet. Without giving away the ending let me just hint that I was totally fooled by the Red Herrings in this mystery. As good as the story line is I agree with other reviewers that the characters drive this story (as in all good novels). The thread of restoration is strong throughout the story and the bond of parent and child is powerful. This is an excellent ending to a very good series.

T.E. George

Murder and mystery continue in Book Four of the Cape Refuge series
A famous mystery writer has just moved to Cape Refuge when a teenage girl is found murdered. Sheila Caruso–ex-con, mother to Sadie and Caleb, and resident of Hanover House–is working for the writer when she discovers that a scene in one of his novels matches the crime scene.
When Police Chief Cade and Blair Owens discover a second dead teenager–mirroring a murder in another of the eccentric writer’s books–Cade is drawn into a web of trickery and deceit. Evidence turns up in Cade’s own truck, and suddenly he becomes the number-one suspect.
Cade tries to clear his name, but when eighteen-year-old Sadie Caruso disappears, tensions mount to a fever pitch. Can Cade find the real killer before Sadie winds up dead? Is the novelist a demented killer, or a hapless victim? And what does Sadie’s own mother have to do with the crimes?
Secrets are uncovered, while lessons are learned about the sins of the father being visited upon his children. Will the consequences of Sheila’s life be fatal, or is there redemption and mercy for her and her children?
‘Chief Matthew Cade rarely considered another line of work, but news of the dead teenage girl made him long for a job as an accountant or electrician—some benign vocation that didn’t require him to look into the eyes of grieving parents.’

Grow Old With Me (The Quilt Trail Series)

Melinda Evaul

Price: 99 cents

Grow Old With Me is such a wonderful book, heartwarming, uplifting and touching. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and it will be one of my top ten for 2011. I felt like I was staying at this special Inn. The name of the Inn is just fantastic, it’s called Mosey Inn. Also all of the rooms in the Inn have names of quilts, and the description of the Inn and surrounding areas were so well done. The characters feel like old friends now and I hated to finish the book and leave my friends behind.
I always love book covers and titles of books and this one by Melinda Evaul is just perfect. You can just imagine the inside of the Inn after seeing what it looks like on the outside.
Benjamin and Sarah are an older couple who at first didn’t have any thoughts of doing anything but just living and surviving life. They didn’t have an easy life and didn’t expect things to change, but change they did.
It seemed like one disaster or hardship just got worked out and another popped up, but it wasn’t to much. You will never be bored with the happenings in this book. I just loved all of the sweet, loving people of this town, but you will also find a couple of mean-spirited people.
I really love stories about older couples and Grow Old With Me is about the best I’ve read.
I really recommend this book. It is one that you will love to read over and over again.
