Teaching Through the Art of Storytelling: Creating Fictional Stories that Illuminate the Message of Jesus (Youth Specialties)

Teaching Through the Art of Storytelling: Creating Fictional Stories that Illuminate the Message of Jesus (Youth Specialties)

Jon Huckins

In my ten years as a youth pastor, the greatest success I experienced in teaching students was when I threw out the props and power point and just told God’s story. Do yourself (and your youth group, Bible study, small group, children) a favor and read this book!

Chip Johnson

As communicators in a culture saturated with storylines, we have the
profound opportunity to invite our students into the masterful Story of
God. There are a variety of ways to invite our students into this
Story, but this book discusses and explores how to teach through one of
Jesus’ most powerful modes of communication–fictional storytelling.
Rabbinical storytelling (otherwise known as Jewish Agada) embraces the
narrative of Scripture and invites its listeners into understanding and
participation. Our Rabbi, Jesus, employed this mode of communication
through his parables. Approaching the topic as a theologian,
philosopher and artist, Jon invites and teaches how to create
modern-day parables that illuminate the message of
Jesus. These stories do not simply illustrate the message; they are, in
fact, the message. Whether hoping to articulate deep theological
concepts or relevant topics, teaching through the art of fictional
storytelling has the potential to engage and invite our students into
The Story.

In this book:

You will learn how to create your own fictional stories (modern day parables) that use a realistic setting, engaging characters and a thought provoking plot to communicate a specific topic.
You are given practical worksheets that offer guidance in developing such stories
Jon includes a variety of stories he has developed over his years of youth ministry and offers them as a resource to any youth pastor/communicator.

E-Squared, the international hit sensation described by one reader as “The Secret on crack,” provided the training wheels, the baby steps, to “really getting it” that thoughts create reality.

James Altucher

If you strive to be a better version of you, you owe it to yourself to read this book.

Kristine Castagnaro

The world is changing. Markets have crashed. Jobs have disappeared. Industries have been disrupted and are being remade before our eyes. Everything we aspired to for “security,” everything we thought was “safe,” no longer is: College. Employment. Retirement. Government. It’s all crumbling down. In every part of society, the middlemen are being pushed out of the picture. No longer is someone coming to hire you, to invest in your company, to sign you, to pick you. It’s on you to make the most important decision in your life: Choose Yourself.

New tools and economic forces have emerged to make it possible for individuals to create art, make millions of dollars and change the world without “help.” More and more opportunities are rising out of the ashes of the broken system to generate real inward success (personal happiness and health) and outward success (fulfilling work and wealth).

This book will teach you to do just that. With dozens of case studies, interviews and examples–including the author, investor and entrepreneur James Altucher’s own heartbreaking and inspiring story–Choose Yourself illuminates your personal path to building a bright, new world out of the wreckage of the old.

Love at Harvest Moon (Holiday Mail Order Brides, Book Seven)

Kit Morgan

Love at Harvest Moon made my autumn! I loved the story of Finn and Eva, but throw in the fact we saw Dallan MacDonald and the perfect recipe for a story was set. If Kit Morgan wrote western fiction on cereal boxes, I would have to buy up the boxes, even though we don’t eat cereal!

cindy j.

Eva Brock’s mother was the most over-bearing, controlling, and opinionated woman she had ever known, and if she didn’t escape out from under her roof, she’d have Eva married off to a man not twice, but THREE times her age! Her only hope was to become a mail-order bride and marry herself off before her mother did.

Finn Mullany wasn’t looking for a wife, and didn’t want one. Or rather, he didn’t deserve one! He’d made some mistakes of late that cost his best friend his sight, and Finn was having a pretty hard time dealing with the aftermath. But what he didn’t know, was that sometimes forgiveness comes in many forms, and many ways, and Lorcan Brody, Finn’s best friend found a way to show him he’d forgiven Finn completely. But would the love of a mail-order bride be enough to help Finn forgive himself?

Amish Knitting Circle: Smicksburg Tales 1 ( Complete Series, Episodes 1-8)

Karen Anna Vogel

This was a wonderful story which actually caused me to think about beginning a knitting circle in my community. I also have learned to “cast my prayers off to God.” I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good book to read.

maf

Smicksburg Tales is a continuing short story serial which started in 2011 and is still in full swing. After 8 episodes are written they are combined into 300+ page novels. If you like the “old-fashioned serials” as many readers do, look for the books in episodes. To start at the very beginning, when Granny starts the knitting circle, look for Amish Knitting Circle: Episode 1 ~
Beginnings. Each episode is approximately 35 pages and only 99 cents.

Here’s the order of books in the long novel format:

Amish Knitting Circle: Smicksburg Tales 1
Amish Friends Knitting: Smicksburg Tales 2
Amish Knit Lit Circle: Smicksburg Tales 3
COMING VERY SOON! Amish Knit & Stitch: Smicksburg Tales 4

Synopsis to Amish Knitting Circle: Granny Weaver believes women could be stronger if spun together., just like the wool she spins into yarn. She invites five women, all with various issues such as infertility, poor body image and marital problems and haunting secrets. As they meet from October to April to knit shawls for charity, they begin to deal with problems, together, in community, the Amish way.

The women reflect on all they’re thankful for…December winds blow sparkling snowflakes everywhere and someone learns she’s a beautiful and unique as the ice crystals falling all around her.

Christmas Cookies ~ It’s Christmas, and Granny Weaver is excited about the knitting circle’s Christmas cookie exchange. She’s comes to see these “Little Women” as her daughters, and along with that, the fretting heart of a mom.

Author of the Week- Heather Blanton

hearts_promo

3d Typewriter with blank paper Top View

I’d like to introduce everyone to this week’s Author of the Week, Heather Blanton! Heather writes Christian Fiction, and her current series takes place in the Rockies. Click on any of the links in this post to check her out! Without further ado, let’s get to know Heather.

hearts_promo1. Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

Looking back over my life, two things have been constants: my awareness of, and eventually, service to my Lord Jesus, and Westerns! I try to put Jesus at the core of everything I do, but I also adore researching Western history, traveling out West, reading and watching Westerns. I’ve got a brand and I’ve been building it for a long, long time. Laugh…

2. When and why did you start writing books?

I’ve been writing since I was 5. Who knows why someone really starts writing. For me, it was a way to combat loneliness or boredom. Back when I was a kid, we didn’t have video games or satellite TV. In fact, because I lived in a fairly isolated mountain community with poor TV reception, we were lucky to get three channels. So I’d write. I usually continued some story I’d seen or read and didn’t want it to end. But by high school, I was coming up with my own stories.

3. What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?

When my sister passed in June of ’99, I started A Lady in Defiance, the story of three sisters stranded in the rowdy, godless mining town of Defiance. But my computer crashed and I lost it! Well, I had a new baby and thought maybe the timing wasn’t right, so I let the story simmer. Then, in’07, it was like God dropped a piano on me and said, “Write that story now.” I had the first draft done in 9 months. But it took a few more years for me to get where I was happy with A Lady. When I self-published it in 2012 as a fundraiser for my Relay for Life team and it went to number one on Amazon, I thought, “God, I’ll save my money and see where you lead.” In February of 2013 he led me to quit my job and dive in to writing full-time.

4. Which one of your books or characters is your favorite?

A Lady in Defiance will probably always be my favorite. The character of Hannah is based on my sister Susan and it’s the book that started it all for me.

5. Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?

I knew nothing about current rules or trends in Christian fiction when I wrote my first book. To some extent, I’m glad. A Lady in Defiance is a real, honest story about flawed characters, but it has several point-of-views, is a little “gritty” for Christian fiction, and doesn’t necessarily follow the “formula” for a romance. Yet, readers responded like crazy to it! It has over 320 reviews on Amazon, if that tells you anything. But that success challenged me to become a more skilled writer so that I could better glorify God and give readers an even deeper experience. Hearts in Defiance, the second book, moves faster, has more twists, and deeper characters.

6. Who is your favorite author and book?

I’ll read almost anything by Tamara Leigh, Tamara Alexander, or Francine Rivers. My favorite book is an odd little supernatural story called The Mirror by Marlys Millheiser. It’s about a girl who becomes her grandmother because of a cursed mirror and lives life in turn-of-the-century Colorado. Weird but good!

7. What book are you reading right now?

I’ll read two and three books at a time. Right now, though, I’m reading The Scriptwriter’s Bible. One of the producers of AMC’s Western Hell on Wheels liked A Lady in Defiance enough to suggest I turn it into a script! Who knows, maybe one day you’ll see Naomi and her sisters on the Hallmark Channel.

8. Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

Usually, some little tidbit of history or a true story will spark an idea. While the character of Hannah in my books is based on my sister, the town of Defiance is based on a mix of ghost towns in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. And there really was a man named Charles McIntyre who owned a mine in one of those long-forgotten towns.

9. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

My greatest joy is going home to Cashiers, NC. I grew up there, graduated from there, have family there. A beautiful community of awesome people who recharge my batteries every time I visit! Me time, though, is a rare commodity, and when I have it, I want to write. My work is my art. Thank the Lord!

I also love facebook! That darn social media site has allowed me to meet some of the most interesting people from all around the world.

10. Do you have any new books in the works?
I have the crazy idea of getting two novels out in the next 12 months. That’s pretty ambitious. One is Book 3 in the Defiance series, and the other is a Western romance, but a totally different story.
11. Is there anything that makes your books special or different from other authors?

Somewhere in all my stories, at least one of my main characters is a Believer and is struggling with something. A faith message is not an afterthought, not an add-on, not an oh-yea-by-the-way. A real person of faith is working out his salvation and struggling to understand how knowing God makes it all better. In Book 1, Naomi had to let go and trust that God knew what he was doing. In Book 2, Charles has to BELIEVE he’s forgiven and forgive himself. In Book 3—well, you’ll find out.

“This is the beginning of a middle grade series that is sure to be great. Both youths and adults will enjoy The Key of Kilenya.” – Jewel Adams

“It is an adventure filled ride that is perfect for middle grade students who love action and science fiction.” – Cindy

“I love the Harry Potter references, as a typical teen has most definitely become familiar with those books.” Heidi – Goodreads Reviewer

“As in Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan, Harry Potter by JK Rowling, Fablehaven by Brandon Mull and other great books, a teenage boy lives an ordinary life while another world thinks he’s something special… It’s gripping all the way through.” – Patricia

“Get this book. You won’t be disappointed unless you have no imagination and don’t like books such as the Harry Potter series (JK Rowling), Fablehaven (Brandon Mull), Percy Jackson (Rick Riordan) or movies like Stardust, etc.” – Karl, Reviewer

“Similar to Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series, this is just a very fun, creative, exciting adventure!” – Debra

“The story has many twists and turns and loads of suspense throughout it and will keep the reader fascinated from start to finish. Reminded me of the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan and Fablehaven written by Brandon Mull.” – Karen

“If you like books written by award winning authors such as Brandon Mull (Fablehaven, Beyonders) and Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson), than you will LOVE ‘The Key of Kilenya.’” – Sarah

“I love the Fablehaven books by Brandon Mull, but the first one started slow for me. The Key of Kilenya doesn’t start slow.” – Rhonda Lynne Bingham

The Sisters of Bethlehem Springs Collection: A Vote of Confidence, Fit to be Tied, A Matter of Character

The Sisters of Bethlehem Springs Collection: A Vote of Confidence, Fit to be Tied, A Matter of Character

Robin Lee Hatcher

A Vote of Confidence

In A Vote of Confidence, the stage is set for some intriguing insight into what it was like during 1915 to be a woman in a “man’s world.” Guinevere Arlington is a beautiful young woman determined to remain in charge of her own life. For seven years, Gwen has carved out a full life in the bustling town of Bethlehem Springs, Idaho, where she teaches piano and writes for the local newspaper. Her passion for the town, its people, and the surrounding land prompt Gwen to run for mayor. After all, who says a woman can’t do a man’s job? But stepping outside the boundaries of convention can get messy. A shady lawyer backs Gwen, believing he can control her once she’s in office. A wealthy newcomer throws his hat into the ring in an effort to overcome opposition to the health resort he’s building north of town. When the opponents fall in love, everything changes, forcing Gwen to face what she may have to lose in order to win.

Fit to be Tied

It’s 1916, and Idaho rancher Cleo Arlington knows everything about horses but nothing about men. So when charged with transforming English aristocrat Sherwood Statham from playboy into cowboy, she’s totally disconcerted. So is Statham, who’s never encountered a woman succeeding in a “man’s world.” Their bumpy trot into romance is frustrating, exhilarating, and ultimately heartwarming.

A Matter of Character

The Sisters of Bethlehem Springs series delivers exactly what readers have been waiting for—smart, confident women who are not afraid to defy convention, live their own dreams, and share their lives if the right man comes along. In A Matter of Character, book three in the Sisters of Bethlehem Springs series, it’s 1918, and Daphne McKinley, heiress to a small fortune, has found contentment in the town of Bethlehem Springs. But Daphne has a secret. A series of dime novels loosely based on local lore and featuring a nefarious villain known as Rawhide Rick has enjoyed modest popularity among readers. Nobody in Bethlehem Springs knows the man behind the stories . . . except Daphne. When newspaperman Joshua Crawford comes to town searching for the man who sullied the good name of his grandfather, Daphne finds herself at a crossroads, reassessing the power of her words, re-thinking how best to honor her gifts, and reconsidering what she wants out of life.

Charlotte Downing, the Duchess of Charming, wants what she wants. Today, it’s a fine pair of lacy slippers crafted by the renowned Ella’s Establishment. To be picture perfect for her presentation to the queen, Charlotte will survive crashed ceilings and falling bricks. Yet, has she met her match in the conservative merchant, whose autumn-colored eyes make her pulse race, especially when he says no?

Caught between the glittering world of the ton and the respectable profession of selling shoes, Edwin Cinder can’t understand the lady’s persistence or the fire lighting her blue eyes when she’s challenged. With his lack of pedigree, there’s no chance for this common God-fearing man to win her hand, but he’ll risk all to save the duchess from the ravages of a London gale.

I read a LOT of Christian fiction and I sometimes feel like the delivery of the gospel throughout is contrived. I am happy to say, Crooked Lines is not more of the same! I give this book a hearty Five Stars and I can’t wait to see how their story continues (*hopefully*)!

Ghost Reader

On the shores of Lake Michigan, Rebecca Meyer seeks escape. Guilt-ridden over her little sister’s death, she sets her heart on India, a symbol of peace.

Across the ocean in South India, Sagai Raj leaves his tranquil hill station home and impoverished family to answer a higher calling. Pushing through diverse cultural and religious milieus, he labors toward his goals, while wrong turns and bad choices block Rebecca from hers.

Traveling similar paths and bridged across oceans through a priest, the two desire peace and their divine destiny. But vows and blind obedience at all costs must be weighed…and buried memories, unearthed.

Crooked Lines, a beautifully crafted debut novel, threads the lives of two determined souls from different continents and cultures. Compelling characters struggle with spirituality through despair and deceptions in search of truth.

The Promise Box (Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors Book 2)

Tricia Goyer

I read many Amish fiction titles each year and Tricia Goyer is one of my favorite authors of the genre. The Promise Box is a well written romantic sequel that is just as good as the first. I was hooked into the plot by the end of the first chapter. Overall, I enjoyed reading The Promise Box and I’m looking forward to book three.

Coffee Addicted Writer’s Reviews

Every year, young Amish men descend on the cozy little town of West Kootenai, Montana, arriving in the spring to live there for six months and receive ‘resident’ status for the hunting season in the fall. They arrive as bachelors, but go home with brides!
In The Promise Box, the second book of best-selling author Tricia Goyer’s Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors series, Lydia Wyse, a book editor from Seattle who grew up Amish, returns to the small community of West Kootenai to give comfort to her father after her mother’s death. She is drawn back to the familiar Amish ways after finding her mother’s most precious possession, a Promise Box of prayers and scripture. What her publisher sees, though, is an opportunity for a sensational ‘tell-all’ book about the Amish.
Lydia soon finds herself falling in love with Amish bachelor Gideon Hooley. She wants nothing more than to forget her past and look forward to a future as an Amish bride. But will the pain of her childhood—and her potential betrayal of her community—keep her from committing her whole heart?

Cathy Barnes

In the small Colorado town of Summit View, a surprising multi-generational mix of women from Grace Church meet once a week to pass a hot dish and to pray. And the funny thing: the more they pray, the more troubles seem to come their way. It isn’t until they invite God to the table that they discover friendship is the spice of life, and a little dash of grace, just like salt, goes a long way.

The Dinner Doctor

The Dinner Doctor

Anne Byrn

I don’t give five stars very often, but this is actually a cookbook that lives up to its promise. I highly recommend it!

Christopher S. Kirby

A marriage of the fast and fantastic, The Dinner Doctor proves that it’s possible to cook meals for your family that taste great—and require little time, preparation, or hassle.

This is cooking that’s not only about coping, but about pleasure. The first and most important step is choosing ingredients wisely. For the Dinner Doctor, that means prepared foods, whether canned, frozen, jarred, dried, or fresh from the salad bar or deli counter. Then comes the doctoring.

Jarred roasted red peppers are puréed with canned chicken broth and sour cream, and garnished with fresh chives for a memorable chilled soup for a summer dinner party. Bagged coleslaw mix is dressed up with nuts, bottle ranch dressing and pre-crumbled cheese for a Blue Cheese, Walnut, and Apple Slaw. Jars of marinara turn into Linguine with Red Clam Sauce (just add a can of clams, dry white wine, and parsley) or a zingy Saturday Night Fever Pasta—with the help of black olive paste and capers.

Even deli potato salad, as tasty as it often is, can take on a variety of personalities—enhance it with crumbled cooked bacon, or prepared horseradish, or curry powder and chopped scallions and shredded carrots. And bland chicken tenders—those saviors of quick cooking—are reinvented as Chinese Chicken, Chicken Piccata, and Curried Chicken and Apple Stew.

Making excellent use of slow cookers, embracing myriad shortcuts, boosting flavor and freshness with hundreds of ideas and quick touches, The Dinner Doctor brings all the joy of serving from-scratch meals into harried lives.

Ditch the Diet: It's Not About the Food

Ditch the Diet: It’s Not About the Food

Nancy Routley

Everyone knows eating vegetables is healthy. This book talks about the real emotional issues behind overeating and weight management struggles. Not to mention it will make you laugh! An excellent read!

Will Routley

The ‘diet industry’s’ approach to weight loss primarily focuses on the ‘what and when’ of how we eat. Nancy’s clinical work and her own personal struggles have led her to the conclusion that this method, focusing on the food, does not work in the vast majority of cases. The irony is that diets actually make people fatter. Long term success rates are shockingly low. Being overweight is not about the food!
This book looks at overeating through an addiction lens showing how food is used to manage emotions, just like other substances. By uncovering our thoughts, connecting with and naming our emotions the author gives practical solutions to change the behaviors that sabotage our weight loss.
This book is written in the direct, no-nonsense voice of its author, with a sense of humor woven throughout. Nancy believes that getting off the diet roller coaster, losing weight and keeping it off for good is about changing your unhealthy relationship with food into one that nourishes your body and soul.

Rain Song (Heart of Carolina Book #1)

Alice J. Wisler

Rain Song was an absolute pleasure to read and absorb. Alice Wisler does a marvelous job taking the reader to Nicole’s world in N. Carolina. I couldn’t wait for each new chapter to see what would happen next. It was a refreshing change from so many Christian novels that are, let’s be honest, full of nothingness.

Susan A. Palumbo

Nicole Michelin avoids airplanes, motorcycles, and most of all, Japan, where her parents once were missionaries. Something happened in Japan…something that sent Nicole and her father back to America alone…something of which Nicole knows only bits and pieces. But she is content with life in little Mount Olive, North Carolina, with her quirky relatives, tank of lively fish, and plenty of homemade pineapple chutney. Through her online column for the Pretty Fishy Web site, she meets Harrison Michaels, who, much to her dismay, lives in Japan. She attempts to avoid him, but his e-mails tug at her heart. Then Harrison reveals that he knew her as a child in Japan. In fact, he knows more about her childhood than she does…
